John 13:16 ESV
16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

What We Have Learned

what I share in this summary could serve as the sermon!
an in depth account of what happened at the last Passover that Jesus celebrated with his disciples immediately before his arrest, wrongful conviction and execution
:
Jesus expressed his love for his disciples in light of 3 painful realities: Jesus’ departure, Judas’ betrayal and Peter’s denial. (John 13)
: command to believe 6x
washed their feet to demonstrate his love for them
Judas’ betrayal
Peters’ denial
: command to believe 6x
Jesus told his disciples to believe in him in the same way they believed in God. (Jn 14:1-14)
remember how God miraculously cared for his people in spite of their sinful rebellion
focus on Jesus vs. focus on troubles
Philippians 4:6–7 ESV
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Proper prayer takes our eyes off ourselves and puts them on the only One who has complete control over our circumstances. ()
is a promise only for those who are in Christ
: loving and keeping commands mentioned 4x
those who love and obey Jesus are given the HS, the Helper
Those who have the Holy Spirit to help them don’t need to worry or be anxious! (Jn 14:15-31)
: vine & branches
those who abide in Christ produce much fruit and experience great joy
you can’t have great joy and at the same time be filled with fear and anxiety!
Fruit producing believers are not as susceptible to worry and fear. (Jn 15:1-11)
: friends 3x
Jesus lays down his life for his friends
they are considered friends who obey Jesus
friends bear fruit (16) and love for one another (17)
who is this friend, Jesus?
Col 1:15-
Colossians 1:15–17 ESV
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
If you have the creator and sustainer of the universe as your friend you have nothing to worry about! (Jn 15:12-17)
embraced the humiliating task of washing their feet (Jn 13:1-20)

The World

“the
up to this point Jesus had been teaching his disciples about their relationship to him and to one another in order that they might overcome their fear, worry and dismay
identified Judas as his betrayer ()
Principle:
we all struggle at various times and to various degrees with anxiety, fear, worry and dismay
it is when we fix our attention on them and try to face them alone that we are in trouble
this is why worry and fear are sins: God is to be our focus, nothing else
Jesus taught his disciples to fight against their fear and dismay by looking to him in faith, love and obedience and by loving one another.
remembering that Jesus is seeking to comfort his disciples, Jesus now focuses his attention on the world
commanded them to love one another as he had loved them ()
he has dealt with their relationship to him, to God and to one another, now the world
“the world” occurs 83x in the 4 gospels:
8x in Matthew, 2x in Mark and 5x in Luke
the vast majority, 67 references, occur in John’s gospel
occurs 21x in 1 & 2 John
“the world” also occurs 21x in 1 & 2 John
almost 50% of the 173 NT references to “the world” occur in John’s writings
The term “the world” has different meanings in the gospel of John depending on the context. (; ; 12:19)
predicted Peter’s denial ()
John 6:33 ESV
33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
Jesus gives life only to those who believe therefore “the world” is the world of believers
encouraged them to believe him in the same way they believed God (Jn 14:1)
John 8:26 ESV
26 I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.”
Jesus will come back for them (Jn 14:2-3)
Jesus himself said that he was called only to Israel therefore in this verse “the world” means the Jewish people ()
of course Jesus’ word eventually went out into the world through his disciples
John 12:19 ESV
19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”
told them the way to where he was going ()
it is obvious that not every individual in the world was there on Palm Sunday
I am the way, the truth and the life ()
they were saying that the crowd was so large that it looked like all of Jerusalem had gone out to greet Jesus
those who love Christ keep his commandments and are given the Helper, the Spirit of truth (Jn 14:15-17)
Wherever Jesus’ disciples experienced hatred it was from the world. (Mt 10:16-18)
Matthew 10:16–18 ESV
16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, 18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles.
courts & synagogues = Jews
governors and kings = Gentiles
Matthew 10:22 ESV
22 and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
“The world” in its largest sense is the universal human system which hates Christ and his kingdom and is fighting against his servants.
for this reason John says,
1 John 2:15 ESV
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
love and obedience go hand in hand!
and James says,
James 4:4 ESV
4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
the HS leaves no wiggle room for divided loyalties!

The World Hates Jesus’ Disciples Because It Hated Jesus

John 15:18 ESV
18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
“if”
tells us that,
The world’s hatred will not always be obvious but it is never absent! ()
Principle:
disciples can be easily led into thinking the world might like them when that hatred is not being manifested
it is easy for us to think the world actually likes us when in fact its default is hatred
the kindness of the world the aberration not its hatred!
Jesus never forgot this in his ministry and therefore often confronted the world
note the many times Jesus confronted those who believed in him!
“know”
experiential knowledge = you’ve experienced it
another way of putting it: “remember”
the disciples had witnessed the hatred of the Jewish leaders in their repeated attempts to bait Jesus and trick him into saying something they could use to destroy him
they were aware of their desire to arrest Jesus and destroy him
Jesus: “whenever hatred breaks out against you remember it is primarily against me. I am the reason the world hates you.”
experience of hatred then is a good thing because it identifies us with Christ
example of Peter and John who rejoiced when beaten by the Sanhedrin ()
Remember the progression of the hatred of the Jewish leaders: verbal warning; physical assault; Stephen martyred.
“the world”
where did Jesus experience hatred?
Cain hated Abel because his deeds were evil and Abel’s righteous ()
1 jn 3:13 - believers should not be surprised the world hates them
where did Jesus experience hatred?
primarily the Jewish people because Jesus ministered almost exclusively to them in Israel ()
though they enjoyed him for a while they ended up crying out for his crucifixion
even more specifically it refers to the Jewish leaders who were seeking to arrest Jesus and put him to death
why did the Jewish world hate Jesus?
John 3:19–20 ESV
19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
John 3:
Jesus was born a Jew and ministered to Jewish people
In Jesus’ earthly ministry he was the light of the Jewish world and they hated his light because it exposed their evil deeds which they loved and did not want to let go. (; 7:7)
so Jesus said to them,
John 7:7 ESV
7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.
they hated Jesus because he pointed out their works they were trusting in could not save them!
it is no wonder they hated Jesus!
Principle:
If you want to know how the world really feels about you as a disciple of the Lord Jesus start confronting their sins!
an example of this when the Lord Jesus confronted the Jewish leaders:
Jesus’ general teaching about money:
Matthew 6:24 ESV
24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
the Pharisees loved money so when they heard Jesus preaching against it they ridiculed him ()
because they loved money they could not love God (no matter how they insisted they did!) and they hated his Son, the Lord Jesus, who condemned their greed
as Jesus’ words have gone out into the world more and more people have come to hate him
the things which caused the Jews to hate Jesus are the same things which caused the Gentiles to hate his disciples when they brought the gospel to them
as Jesus’ words go out into the world and more and more people hear them the majority hate them and those who faithfully teach and preach them
Principle:
The witness of the gospel against our native sinfulness and depravity is offensive.
“you cannot please God” (Rom 8:7-8)
“your righteous acts are as filthy rags in the sight of God” (Isa 64:6)
if you don’t repent of yourself and your thinking and your deeds God will destroy you
the exclusivity of the gospel is offensive, especially in our culture which worships tolerance!
John 14:6 ESV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus to Nicodemus: “you must be born again”
there has always been the temptation to remove the offence
the naive attempt to try and make sinners comfortable in the church
if a sinner does not feel uncomfortable because of the message coming through the worship, the prayers and the preaching something is very wrong
the folly of trying to get the world to like us so that we can share the gospel with them
why is this comforting?
if we understand the world we will not be surprised when their express their hatred
we will not be afraid and back down
we will rejoice that we have been counted worthy to be treated like Jesus
will make us bold witnesses

The World Hates Jesus’ Disciples Because They Are Not Of Them

not only does the world hate the disciples because they belong to Jesus but they hate them because they are not of them
John 15:19 ESV
19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
because the world hates the Lord Jesus they hate all who are on his side, all who are with him
the world is hostile to God and refuses to submit to him
Romans 8:7 ESV
7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.
sinners lack the ability to submit to God
not only are they unwilling but they are unable
for this reason Christ must choose some out of the world to belong to him
by grace he gives them a new heart by raising them out of their slavery to sin
by grace he gives them faith to believe
this hostile world loves its own and hates those who are not on their side
1 Peter 4:3–4 ESV
3 For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. 4 With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you;
because the world hates the Lord Jesus they hate all who are on his side, all who are with him,

The World Persecutes Jesus’ Disciples Because They Serve a Different Master

John 15:20 ESV
20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.
another reason the disciples were hated by the world was because they were different
they were not like them
because they hated and persecuted Christ they hate and persecute those who serve him
like them
John 13:16 ESV
16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
1 Peter 4:3–4 ESV
3 For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. 4 With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you;
Matthew 10:24–25 ESV
24 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.
1 Pet 4:
1 Peter 4:4 ESV
4 With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you;
Principle:
everyone has a master
everyone serves someone or something
stated another way, no one is truly free
God created us to serve and it is baked into our DNA
Romans 6:16 ESV
16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
Rom 6:
2 Peter 2:19 ESV
19 They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.
Psalm 119:91 ESV
91 By your appointment they stand this day, for all things are your servants.
Jesus in : we have one of 2 fathers, God or the devil
we all do the will of our spiritual father
Matthew 10:16–17 ESV
16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues,
John 7:7 ESV
7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.
Matthew 10:16–18 ESV
16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, 18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles.
courts & synagogues = Jews
governors and kings = Gentiles
,
Matthew 10:22 ESV
22 and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
“the world” in its largest sense is human system which stands against Christ and his kingdom
for this reason John says,
1 John 2:15 ESV
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
and James says,
James 4:4 ESV
4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

The World Hates Jesus’ Disciples Because They Have Been Chosen

John 15:19 ESV
19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

The World Hates Jesus’ Disciples Because They Do Not Know God the Father

John 15:21 ESV
21 But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.
John 17:25 ESV
25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me.
what does it mean to know God?
the Jewish people certainly thought they knew God, after all they were trying to obey his laws and perform the ceremonies he commanded
what it means to know God:
[Read 1 Jn 2:28-3:10]
“If you were of the world the world would love you as its own”
of the world = belongs to the world
you have been squeezed into its mould
your father is the devil
the cares of the world make the seed unfruitful (; ;
- light comes into the world and people love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil
the world hates Jesus because he testifies its works are evil ()
Jesus the light of the world (; ; )
in the world you will have tribulation but I have over come the world ()
all believers were given to Christ by the Father who took them out of the world - while they were in the world they were the Fathers ()
the world hates believers because they are not of the world just as Christ wasn’t ()
they are not of the world like Christ is not ()
as Christ was sent into the world so are believers ()
the world does not know the Father ()
the world cannot know God through its wisdom ()
to be in the world is to be separated from Christ, alienated from Israel, strangers to the covenant and having no hope ()
the elementary principles of the world = human tradition and includes philosophy and empty deceit () and in Christ we die to them ()
believers are to keep themselves unstained from the world ()
friendship with the world is enmity with God ()
the corruptions that is in the world because of sinful desire ()
having escaped the defilements of the world ()
the world does not know us because it does not know the Father ()
the world has its own language that all who belong to it understand ()
our faith, believing that Jesus is the Son of God, is the victory that overcomes the world ()
the knowledge they would be hated by the world was to rid them of fear
John 13:16 ESV
16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
Matthew 10:24–25 ESV
24 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.
Mt 10:24-
one of the things which makes fear so debilitating is not knowing what will happen
this knowledge was to rid them of fear
knowing the world will hate us removes the surprise factor
understanding what Jesus tells us helps:
you believe in God, believe also in my = we can trust him to care for, provide for and protect us
he has given the Helper the HS to all who love and obey him
as we maintain our connection to Christ and bear much fruit we can count on the Father to work in and through us
if Jesus is our friend we do not need the friendship of the world
they can kill the body but not the soul ()
God cares for the insignificant and worthless sparrow so he will care for his children ()
whatever we do when confronted by men concerning Christ he will do concerning us before the Father ()
confessing Christ = Christ confessing us
denying Christ = Christ denying us
why does the world hate us?
it hated Jesus because he testified that their deeds were evil
they hate us because we do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation
we are the light of the world and the world hates the light and refuses to come into it lest its evil deeds be exposed
we are not to love the world because to do so is be an enemy of God
abide in me and I in you to bring forth much fruit = righteousness - the world persecutes Christians because they are righteous - blessed are you when persecuted for righteousness’ sake - Peter speaks of this as well
John 15:18 ESV
18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
hatred is not guaranteed but certainly possible
“know”
experiential knowledge - the disciples had witnessed the animosity of the Jews and their repeated attempts to bait him and trick him into saying something they could use against him
they were aware of their desire to arrest Jesus
“the world”
“the world” certainly hated Jesus because he declared its works to be evil (jn 7:7)
it is obvious that “the world” does not literally mean every individual in the world but the world of Jews and specifically the world of Jews in the physical area of Israel in the 1st century
the Jewish people certainly hated Jesus because he declared its works to be evil (jn 7:7)
Cain hated Abel because his deeds were evil and Abel’s righteous ()
1 jn 3:13 - believers should not be surprised the world hates them
John 15:19 ESV
19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
“If you were of the world the world would love you as its own”
of the world = belongs to the world

The World Hates You
it hates true believers because it hates our Lord Jesus (18-19)
it hates true believers because they are not of them (19)
it hates true believers because they have been chosen out of the world (19)
it hates true believers on account of Jesus’ name (21)
because it hates true believers it persecutes them just as it persecuted Christ (20)
they persecuted Christ because they did not know the Father who sent him (21)
they persecuted Christ because they did not know the Father who sent him (21)
the opposition of the world to Jesus is sinful because he spoke directly to them (22)
the opposition of the world to Jesus is sinful because of the signs and wonders he did before them (24)
to hate Jesus it to hate the Father (23-24)
their hatred has no cause (25)
Jesus did nothing to deserve it
everything Jesus did should have cause them to love him
