Have you ever wondered why we have deacons in Baptist Churches?
What are deacons?
What is their work?
There are but two ordained leadership positions given in scripture…Pastors and Deacons.
The Pastor is the under-shepherd of Jesus in the local church.
The deacon is also a minister.
“Deacons” means “Helper” or more literally a table waiter.
One who ministers to the needs of church members.

In our text, we find the occasion of the setting aside of the first seven deacons.
I – THE PROBLEM (vs.1)
A – The problem: a task too large to handle.
1 - As the number of the disciples grew, so did the needs within the church.
B – The problem: Unintentional neglect.
1 - The church is responsible to minister to people.
2 – When the present organization does not allow for this, a response is needed.
A – The organization that worked 15 years ago, may be woefully inadequate
For present needs…needs change with the times.
II – THE PROPOSITION (vs 2 – 3)
A - Made to the church
1 – Although led by the apostles, the church functioned as a democratic body.
B - The problem presented.
1 - The demands of waiting on tables was robbing valuable prayer and study
time from the apostles.
2 – The time spent table—waiting could have been better invested in evangelism and other areas of ministry.
C - The prescription given.
1 – Set aside seven men to help the apostles, these men were to be:
a) of honest report
b) filled with the Holy Spirit.
c) full of wisdom
III – THE PROMISE (vs.4)
A -The Apostles to be given continually to prayer.
1 -The necessity of prayer.
a) The apostles could not lead with God’s leadership they could only
receive it in prayer
2 - The Ministry of Prayer.
a) More good is done when on the knees than we’ll ever know.
B - The Apostles to be given continually to the Ministry of the Word of God.

a) The Word of God is that which calls the lost to repentance ().
b) The Word of God is that which feeds the Spiritual man and leads him to

a) Symbolic of setting apart for special service.
2 - The attitude of Ordination.
a) Ordination assures the deacon, etc. of prayers and personal support for
his ministry.

2 – People Saved.
3 – The Church grew.
CONCLUSION;
The ministry of the deacon is a unique and demanding one.
