The Believer's Noble Obligation

Introduction: The writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews exhorts his readers to the life of faith, despite opposition and suffering. This calls for endurance and perseverance. In light of the work of our Great High Priest, we have a threefold response, or obligation:

I. Heed the Call for Intimacy  (Heb. 10:22)

What does intimacy with God look like? It involves personal sincerity in faith, personal certainty of faith, and personal purity of faith. This parallels our human relationships.

We can draw near without any barriers. The opposite is to withdraw, or not to answer the invitation. By faith, we draw near.

II. Heed the Call for Tenacity  (Heb. 10:23)

Tenacity speaks of determination, or someone who has a firm grip and won’t let go. God has a firmer grip than we do, but we need to heed the word of God (v. 23). Tenacity involves fidelity to the Word and dependency on the Lord. Our hope rests on God’s faithfulness.

III. Heed the Call for Ministry  (vv. 24-25)

The need is real; the stakes are high, the time is short, so we must minister purposefully (v. 24), consistently (v. 25), and urgently (v. 25).

Conclusion: These are the days for dynamic, dedicated, and devoted faith and obedience to the Lord. We must move forward in the life of faith and draw near to God.
