Romans 12:1–2 NIV84
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Therefore connects us to the previous part of Romans.

1. I urge you

The phrase is tender, “I urge you” - please consider this
The phrase is also tough, “I urge you” - you must do this
Give yourself to work of God
Living sacrifice as opposed to a dead sacrifice
Work of God is beyond the 4 walls of the church
That is spiritual act of worship - much more than a song

2. In view of what God has done

Don’t be distracted by what hasn’t happened
Look to all that He has done
Examine His goodness on your life
His faithfulness is from everlasting to everlasting
His faithfulness yesterday reveals His power for tomorrow

3. Do not conform

Don’t bring the sinful into the spiritual
Don’t think that the world’s system will govern in God’s kingdom
Stop acting and doing what the heathen do
The world’s pattern has limitations

4. Be transformed

The word comes from a greek word where we get metamorphosis
Metamorphosis: A change of form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one, by natural or supernatural means
Means to remodel - tear down and rebuild
Means to change into another form
Change the outer appearance of the person, it starts inside
You must be committed to the change
Continue in the transformation
Don’t let the struggle keep you from the transformation
In the caterpillar stage, the butterfly to be, needs to eat a lot
In the adult stage the Butterfly must reproduce

5. Renew your mind

Someone once said, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”
That is a lie
The process is renew your mind is called neuroplasticity
It is the ability of the brain to change continuously throughout an individual’s life
Even if the individual has developmental challenges
It requires a lot of repetition to strengthen the muscle
2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV84
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
You need to start thinking like Christ
Philippians 4:8–9 NIV84
8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
You have to be committed to the renewal process

2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
Change what you think and your results will change
Gal 5:
Galatians 5:24–25 NIV84
24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
Renewal requires the continued challenge of the mind

23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.
