This week:
The sign of Jonah
What is a sign, what is its purpose?
Does a sign have any power on its own?
No, it points to something greater than itself

Jonah, A Foreshadowing of Christ

Matthew 12:38–40 ESV
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Matthew 12:38–39 ESV
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
What sign is Jesus speaking of?
Jonah 1:17 ESV
17 And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Matthew 12:40 ESV
40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Jonah in the great fish represents Christ in the grave
when He emerges He is the message of hope

God Gives Provision

Jonah 1:17 ESV
17 And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Why was Jonah thrown into the sea?
he asked to be
to save the lives of those around him
to satisfy the wrath of God
Even in doing this, God gave provision to him to save his life
Today God gives us provision not in a large animal but in His son Jesus Christ
Colossians 1:20–21 ESV
20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. 21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds,
Colossians 1:19–22 ESV
19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. 21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him,
Colossians 1:19–21 ESV
19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. 21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds,

Reconcile - to restore a relationship
Through Jonah the Ninevites could have a restored relationship to God
Through Christ we can have a restored relationship to God
Why does Jesus say He will give no sign other than that of Jonah?
WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED TO BELIEVE????
Jesus died the way He said He would
He was buried for as long as He said He would
He rose from the grave and was seen by others as He said He would
JESUS IS ENOUGH - That’s it!
When you don’t know what to say, Just say Jesus
There’s still power in the name, the name of Jesus - Just Say Jesus by 7eventh Time Down
At that name every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that He is Lord!!
What do I do?
Romans 10:9 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Confess and believe
Any situation Jesus is the answer? YES!
everything is for Him, by Him and through Him
The hard decisions I face? Yep
The hardships I have endured? You Bet
My loneliness, my anger, my resentment, my bitterness, my hatred, my doubt, my immorality, all that is answered with Jesus? - Most Definitely
Confess that He is LORD!
Believe in Him
1 John 5:
1 John 5:5 ESV
5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
1 John 5:
1 John 5:1–5 ESV
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
How do you overcome this world? by believing in Jesus!
God has provided the way out of death and slavery to sin, through the atoning work of Christ on the Cross!
