Introduction/Background
Corinth was a very cosmopolitan place.
It was an important city.
It was intellectually alert, materially prosperous, but morally corrupt.
There was a pronounced tendency for its inhabitants to indulge in whatever they desired.
It was the capital of the Roman province of Achia.
And the finest athletes were attracted to the Isthmian Games celebrated near the city, games so important that they continued to be celebrated even when the city was destroyed.
et for all that the city was one of the most important in Greece.
It was populous8 and wealthy.9

And the finest athletes were attracted to the Isthmian Games celebrated near the city, games so important that they continued to be celebrated even when the city was destroyed (SPC, p. 14).
There was fertile soil nearby, and grapes flourished (our word ‘currant’ derives from ‘Corinth’ and is a reminder of the success of the city’s horticulture).
The city to which Paul came preaching the gospel was, then,
The ideal of the Corinthian was the reckless development of the individual.
The merchant who made his gain by all and every means, the man of pleasure surrendering himself with every lust, the athlete steeled to every bodily exercise and proud in his physical strength, are the true Corinthian types: in a word the man who recognised no superior and no law but his own desires.

Corinth was a prestigious centre from which the gospel could radiate out to the surrounding districts.
There was a large floating population, with merchants and travellers staying a few days and then going their way.
Anything preached in Corinth would be sure of a wide dissemination.
Paul in Corinthians
.
The occasion and purpose of 1 Corinthians
Paul writes this letter to the Corinthian Christians
Paul had received a letter from the Corinthian church, for which a reply was necessary.
But what mattered much more to Paul was clearly the news that had come to him independently of the letter.
There were disquieting irregularities in the conduct of the believers at Corinth.
Paul was troubled. The Church was in the world, as it had to be, but the world was in the Church, as it ought not to be.
This bothered Paul so much that he spent six chapters dealing with it before he so much as touched on the matters about which they had written to him.
In this morning’s text, Paul wraps up his discussions on the freedoms he has an apostle and how he does not exercise that freedom, with encouragement on how to live this life.
Athletic contests were common in the Greek world, and the Isthmian Games, second only to the Olympic Games, were held every two years at Corinth.
Paul often uses imagery from the Games.
How do We Run This Race
Run YOUR race.
In our culture we are bombard by people appearing to live their life out loud on social media.
But, young people, often all we see are highlight reels of their life; what they want us to see at the moment.
The cultural through the music we listen to, social media, programming we watch, places we go wants us to live our life according to its dictates.
The Enemy woos us into a place of discontent, dissatisfaction and or even depression because our lives do not look like someone else’s life.
We don’t have the same phone, or clothing, video games as someone else.
We don’t have he same car, job, health, or stability in our life.
But scriptures says we are in the world but not of this world.
Hebrew 12:1 tells us that we should run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
There is a race course that is marked out for us that may not look like same course that someone else has, yet we are all running the race of life.
tells us that the believers are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Therefore, we have to run the race God for us.
Crystal Evans Hurst shares the example that
Hebrew 12:1 We have course that has been set before us.
God has equipped us with talents resources and challenges that we are to steward to be good stewards using them and employing them for God’s glory
Crystal Evans Hurst tells the story of how she prepared her boys for a week of sleep away camp.
She neatly prepared clothing for each boy for each day.
She placed underwear, shirt, shorts and socks a zip loc bag fo Monday packed their clothing for each day putting them individual ziplock bags with labels on them.
Each day all they had to do was take out the pouch and put on the clothes for the day.
However, when they returned home from camp she found that Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday pouches were opened, but Thursday, Friday and Saturday were had been touched.
She confronted them and asked why did you not wear the clothes I prepared for them.
She looked at them in the eye and said, “That’s nasty.”
She complained of all the time and effort that she had spent packing them with everything they needed for that day.
They gave an answer that they were so tired in the morning that just grabbed what was on top and rather than digging down a little deeper in the trunk to get the clothing that was prepared for today.
She said that was unacceptable.
She had poured into them so that they would reflect and represent her and the home they had come from, becasuse the people the boys were at camp with didn’t know who she was.
So her sons were a reflection of her.
Young people, God has taken time and effort to pack you with givings and talents that He expects you to use.
He has put the resources of the universe at his disposal to benefit you.
Do not only take off the top and do what is easy and not use everything that He has given you.
Don’t just follow the culture.
He wants you to use every resources he has made available to you .
Use it.
Parents and guardians you may have to help identify what this giftings.
That thing that is driving you crazy about your child might be that that thing .
