I. Introduction

a. Scripture:

And as always, I’m going to ask you to stand with me, if you are able, as we read from God’s Holy, Perfect, Sufficient and inerrant Word.
Exodus 1:15–22 NASB95
Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other was named Puah; and he said, “When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon the birthstool, if it is a son, then you shall put him to death; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.” But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded them, but let the boys live. So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and let the boys live?” The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife can get to them.” So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and became very mighty. Because the midwives feared God, He established households for them. Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son who is born you are to cast into the Nile, and every daughter you are to keep alive.”
<Pray>
Thank you, and you may be seated.

II. Contextualization

a. Last time: Continuation of Genesis…Genesis pt. II..written by Moses
b. New generation of Israelites....Abr, Isa, Jac, Joseph are all gone
c. New generation of Egyptians: Hyksos invaded, defeated the Egyptians
brought them into
Good: brought them into the Bronze Age
Bad: there was a new generation of Pharaoh’s who didn’t know or CARE about Joseph
Exodus 1:8 NASB95
Now a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.
d. Last time: sometimes we must deal with evil leaders…Pharoah, afraid of expanding Jewish population…orders them to be slaves....put taskmasters [slavedrivers] over them..ordered them to be treated harshly.
Exodus 1:11 NASB95
So they appointed taskmasters over them to afflict them with hard labor. And they built for Pharaoh storage cities, Pithom and Raamses.
e. Israel’s Bondage is like the Sinner’s Bondage
f. Persecution Leads to Growth (Hebrew people much like today’s church)

III. Major Points

1. Satan targets One Group
2. God Blesses those Who Resist Evil
3. Satan Doesn’t Give Up

IV. Point #1: Satan targets One Group

Exodus 1:15–16 NASB95
Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other was named Puah; and he said, “When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon the birthstool, if it is a son, then you shall put him to death; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”
Exodus 1:15-16
Explanation
The group that Satan first targets: Egyptian Midwives…women who assisted with birth....two in particular Shifrah and Pooah.
And remember: why the males?...Satan’s goal is to stamp out the opportunity for a Savior to be born....remember: Messiah would be a male from the Hebrew people…Satan knows not who it will be
This is foreshadowing what will happen when Jesus is born:
“Massacre of the Innocents”
Foretold in: Jeremiah...
Jeremiah 31:15 NASB95
Thus says the Lord, “A voice is heard in Ramah, Lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; She refuses to be comforted for her children, Because they are no more.”
b. Happens in: Gospel of Matthew in which Herod the Great, king of Judea, orders the execution of all male children two years old and under in the vicinity of Bethlehem
Matthew 2:16–18 NASB95
Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi. Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “A voice was heard in Ramah, Weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; And she refused to be comforted, Because they were no more.”
Matthew 2:16-1
c. So Satan targets this one group of supposedly insignificant, weak women.
Illustration
Application
Church, have you ever felt like the Devil was all over you? Like He was dragging up old sins? Depressing you? Attacking your family? Attacking your health? Giving you anxiety? Making you miserable? Making you doubt your faith?
Here’s the deal…Satan focuses on groups until they resist him and drive Him off…Satan can be very patient…work on folks for years....but if you fight him, he’ll run. Satan will be patient, but he won’t waste his time....he knows his time is limited....
James 4:7 NASB95
Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
c. How do you get Satan off your back? Well James lays it out:
Submit to God....Give HIM your life.
Resist the Devil…don’t give in....remind him of His defeat.
RESIST Him…use God’s Word and He will not fight back....because Satan won’t waste his time…instead he will FLEE…coward that he is.

V. Point #2: God Blesses those Who Rely on Him

Exodus 1:17-21
Exodus 1:17–21 NASB95
But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded them, but let the boys live.
Exodus 1:17-
Explanation
So these women, supposedly the weak, defied Pharoah....defied Satan. Refused to kill those poor children...
Pharoah calls the midwives..and the Egyptian midwives rightly defied them....
Acts 5:29 NASB95
But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
c. So God actually blessed the midwives…their actions caused the Hebrew people to expand even more.
d. God actually blessed those midwives for siding with God…it says “He established households for them.”....that means God made them very wealthy and prosperous.
e. These women seemed weak....but God uses the weak doesn’t He? He blesses those who rely on Him.
Illustration
Think about it…in this case Satan tried to take advantage of two seemingly insignificant women…and not only that, the mothers just as they’ve given birth…and not only THAT, the babies themselves....who is weaker than a new born baby? Yet God used all of them to confound the Pharoah....and Satan. Just another attempt by Satan, the murderer to keep the Messiah from being born…Very shortly, Jesus will use the cry of a little baby to reach the heart of Pharaoh’s daughter....all for relying on Him and trusting Him.
Application
You see this is what I mean by the upside down logic of God: He used the seemingly weak and insignificant midwives to confound the king…they were used to thwart Satan.
Church: God uses the weak things of this world to defeat the mighty evil things. God blesses those that resist evil…these women were blessed for resisting....Pharaoh's daughter resisted evil when Moses showed up in the basket…God blessed her with that child. God blesses those who resist evil and follow Him.
Wiersbe, W. W. (1993). Wiersbe’s Expository Outlines on the Old Testament (). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books..
Church: when you resist evil, God will bless you. When you allow Him to use you in your weakness, you will find that you can do even greater things through Him.
2 Corinthians 12:9 NASB95
And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
2 Corinthians
Wiersbe, W. W. (1993). Wiersbe’s Expository Outlines on the Old Testament (). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.
d. Church: all you need is GOD....His GRACE is ENOUGH!....the Bible says that power is PERFECTED in weakness....why? Because it MAGNIFIES Him and lowers our own view of self....for that reason we BOAST in our weakness....the Bible says THAT is the key to power…to rely on Him and give HIM the power. GOD

VI. Point #3: Satan Doesn’t Give Up

Exodus 1:22
Exodus 1:22 NASB95
Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son who is born you are to cast into the Nile, and every daughter you are to keep alive.”
Exodus 1:22
Explanation
So Pharaoh gets desperate…he couldn’t even influence the little midwives...
He flees from them…but he doesn’t give up.
Attacks the next group: the army…staunch followers…people who couldn’t resist.
Orders the babies cast alive into the Nile
Illustration
When Adolf Hitler took over Germany, he did not immediately go after all the groups that he could. He did not immediately go after the Jews....first it was the Communists....then the trade unionists…then the Jews…then the gypsies and blacks....Satan, does not just give up on one group…and he shows no favoritism....
Application
Church: here’s the deal....When Satan can’t get what he wants from you, again, he won’t waste his time....he’ll flee until you open your heart and mind to his influence again....but he’ll move on
He has no new tricks…always the same thing
Don’t give Him an opening…cut Him off....follow God…you’re feeling vulnerable, open your Bible....you’re feeling tempted, open your Bible and pray....He’ll move on....he won’t ever give up, as you can see....he has no new tricks. He just moves on to the next victim.

VII. Conclusion

a. Let me ask you this evening, are you resisting Satan and submitting to God? Are you staying committed and staying focused in His Word and in prayer? That’s the only way to do it....because remember: Satan doesn’t give up unless you give him a reason to.
