LAST WEEK
We looked at various glorious truths of the Bible.
Truths that set us free from the guilt that sin brings.
Truths that set us free from the guilt within
We were encouraged to have the same mind as Christ
To weigh out our calling against the temporal satisfaction of sin.
You should check out the message on iTunes, Youtube, or VCLB.org
THIS WEEK
We are going to continue to look at the definition of a Christian
We are going to see Paul clue us into what the life of the Christian is actually about.
What I want us to be thinking about is this:
What defines a Christian?
What behaviors should the Christian be exemplifying?
What happens in the Storms of life for the Christian?
Are Christians exempt from suffering?
Do Christians have a get out of Jail Free pass?
How should the Christian deal with suffering?

BROTHERS AND SISTERS
ONE OF THE GREATEST THINGS WE CAN DO AS CHRISTIANS, IS TO HAVE A HUMBLE POSTURE AND A MENTAL DRIVE TO BE INDEBTED TO THE WORK OF THE SPIRIT.
To see ourselves indebted to the mission of God
To see ourselves as people who yield to the working of the Holy Spirit
To ask God, seek God, and obey God in what He is whispering into our ears.
WE HAVE BEEN CRIPPLED BY OUR SPIRITUAL DEBT FOR TOO LONG
YIELDING TO THE FLESH FOR WHAT SEEMS LIKE A LIFETIME
AND NOW THAT WE HAVE BEEN PURCHASED BY GOD
NOW THAT WE SURRENDERED OUR WILL TO THE WILL OF ANOTHER
WHY NOT, BE INDEBTED TO THAT CAUSE FOR WHICH WE HAVE BEEN RESCUED.
WHY NOT PUT ALL OF OUR EFFORTS INTO THAT CALLING?
Why not place our energy into fulfilling the Greater Calling?
__________
Paul is making it clear to us, that this isn’t always the way it goes.
But it is the best thing for us
For if we live according to the flesh, continually feeding that part of self, we will die
But if we live according to the Spirit, you put to death the source of all ungodliness
If we live according to the Spirit
We put to death the very thing that brought forth death
We put death in it’s grave, as Jesus did.
But not only that
For the Christian, this is two fold . . .
We must both, put the things of death to death
We must . . .
If we live according to the Spirit, we shall know first hand, what Jesus meant by “Life more Abundant”
WE.
WILL.
LIVE.
I guess we can conclude that Paul is giving us a new way of Life.
A way to truly live
A way to truly be free
And it has nothing to do with the Flesh, and the work therein.
THERE IS SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT US
THERE IS SOMETHING THAT THE CHURCH HAS THAT THE WORLD DOES NOT.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT IS?
If we can’t define that for ourselves, there might be a misunderstanding of the Gospel.
We may not understand what Jesus has called us to be.
We may not have experienced the transformative work of the Spirit, and therefore do not know what we are indebted to.

VERSE 14
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these have become children of God”
We did not receive a Spirit of bondage
God didn’t save us to enslave us
God didn’t rescue us for us to live in fear
But to know who our Spiritual Father is.
It is no longer the Prince of the Power of the Air
It is no longer the deciever
It is no longer the accuser of the brethren
We have been adopted into a royal family
Into an identity of “Being Known” by God
Where He calls us Sons and Daughters and we can call Him “Daddy”, “Abba”
The only One that can bear witness of this adoption
The only One who can confirm this reality is the Holy Spirit
And if He is in us.
If we are being convicted of our sin
If we are being spoken to by a source of truth
Then we can confidently say
We are children of God
We are heirs of God
And subsequently, Joint heirs with Christ
But there is a caveat
Paul says
“If” indeed we suffer with Him
That just like Jesus was glorified after His suffering, so we too.
Many will preach a doctrine that exempts the audience from suffering
Many will preach against suffering
Many will steer the congregation the other way
As a church goer, this is great to hear, but very unbiblical
I mean, who wouldn’t want to hear that their life will be pain free
Who wouldn’t want to hear that, “Because they are following Jesus”, there is now no more suffering
That you can live your best life now
That you won’t ever get a cancer diagnosis
That you won’t ever be sick
Though it sounds amazing, it is very far from the truth
What did Jesus say?
Jesus told us in
That in Him we have Peace
But in the World, we will have tribulation
But in Christ, whatever may come, hell or high water, we have peace
How?
Because Christ has overcome the world, the grave, and the devil
