LAST WEEK

We looked at various glorious truths of the Bible.
Truths that set us free from the guilt that sin brings.
Truths that set us free from the guilt within
We were encouraged to have the same mind as Christ
To weigh out our calling against the temporal satisfaction of sin.
You should check out the message on iTunes, Youtube, or VCLB.org

THIS WEEK

We are going to continue to look at the definition of a Christian
We are going to see Paul clue us into what the life of the Christian is actually about.
What I want us to be thinking about is this:
What defines a Christian?
What behaviors should the Christian be exemplifying?
What happens in the Storms of life for the Christian?
Are Christians exempt from suffering?
Do Christians have a get out of Jail Free pass?
How should the Christian deal with suffering?

TURN TO

Romans 8:12–39 NKJV
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. 23 Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. 24 For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. 26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified. 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:12-

PRAY

Romans 8:12–17 NKJV
Romans 8:12
BROTHERS AND SISTERS
ONE OF THE GREATEST THINGS WE CAN DO AS CHRISTIANS, IS TO HAVE A HUMBLE POSTURE AND A MENTAL DRIVE TO BE INDEBTED TO THE WORK OF THE SPIRIT.
To see ourselves indebted to the mission of God
To see ourselves as people who yield to the working of the Holy Spirit
To ask God, seek God, and obey God in what He is whispering into our ears.
WE HAVE BEEN CRIPPLED BY OUR SPIRITUAL DEBT FOR TOO LONG
YIELDING TO THE FLESH FOR WHAT SEEMS LIKE A LIFETIME
AND NOW THAT WE HAVE BEEN PURCHASED BY GOD
NOW THAT WE SURRENDERED OUR WILL TO THE WILL OF ANOTHER
WHY NOT, BE INDEBTED TO THAT CAUSE FOR WHICH WE HAVE BEEN RESCUED.
WHY NOT PUT ALL OF OUR EFFORTS INTO THAT CALLING?
Why not place our energy into fulfilling the Greater Calling?
__________
Paul is making it clear to us, that this isn’t always the way it goes.
But it is the best thing for us
For if we live according to the flesh, continually feeding that part of self, we will die
But if we live according to the Spirit, you put to death the source of all ungodliness
If we live according to the Spirit
We put to death the very thing that brought forth death
We put death in it’s grave, as Jesus did.
But not only that
For the Christian, this is two fold . . .
We must both, put the things of death to death
We must . . . If we live according to the Spirit, we shall know first hand, what Jesus meant by “Life more Abundant”
WE. WILL. LIVE.
I guess we can conclude that Paul is giving us a new way of Life.
A way to truly live
A way to truly be free
And it has nothing to do with the Flesh, and the work therein.
THERE IS SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT US
THERE IS SOMETHING THAT THE CHURCH HAS THAT THE WORLD DOES NOT.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT IS?
If we can’t define that for ourselves, there might be a misunderstanding of the Gospel.
We may not understand what Jesus has called us to be.
We may not have experienced the transformative work of the Spirit, and therefore do not know what we are indebted to.

VERSE 14
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these have become children of God”
We did not receive a Spirit of bondage
God didn’t save us to enslave us
God didn’t rescue us for us to live in fear
But to know who our Spiritual Father is.
It is no longer the Prince of the Power of the Air
It is no longer the deciever
It is no longer the accuser of the brethren
We have been adopted into a royal family
Into an identity of “Being Known” by God
Where He calls us Sons and Daughters and we can call Him “Daddy”, “Abba”
The only One that can bear witness of this adoption
The only One who can confirm this reality is the Holy Spirit
And if He is in us.
If we are being convicted of our sin
If we are being spoken to by a source of truth
Then we can confidently say
We are children of God
We are heirs of God
And subsequently, Joint heirs with Christ
But there is a caveat
Paul says
“If” indeed we suffer with Him
That just like Jesus was glorified after His suffering, so we too.
Many will preach a doctrine that exempts the audience from suffering
Many will preach against suffering
Many will steer the congregation the other way
As a church goer, this is great to hear, but very unbiblical
I mean, who wouldn’t want to hear that their life will be pain free
Who wouldn’t want to hear that, “Because they are following Jesus”, there is now no more suffering
That you can live your best life now
That you won’t ever get a cancer diagnosis
That you won’t ever be sick
Though it sounds amazing, it is very far from the truth
What did Jesus say?
Jesus told us in
That in Him we have Peace
But in the World, we will have tribulation
But in Christ, whatever may come, hell or high water, we have peace
How?
Because Christ has overcome the world, the grave, and the devil
And if He is for us, who and what can be against us?
When we exempt ourselves from suffering, we devalue the example that Christ left us with
We say we want to be like Jesus, but not in suffering
Unbeknownst to us, we also divert the glory that comes with suffering.
For the one active in ministry
For the one fighting for the souls of others through prayer
For the one allowing the Spirit to move in their lives
Suffering becomes complimentary to the Faith they believe in.
Suffering becomes a way of life.
There are some lulls,
But then again, their are those close out sets that clear everyone out f the water.
PAUL HAS SUCH A WORD FOR THOSE GOING THROUGH IT
SOMETHING THAT WILL CHANGE THEIR PERSPECTIVE
SOMETHING THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR MIDSET
Romans 8:18 NKJV
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
Romans 8:18-
CHURCH, THIS IS THE WORD OF THE LORD FOR US TODAY
WHATEVER YOU ARE GOING THROUGH
Though it may seem like a season of barreness
See it as the stage of preparation
Though it may seem discouraging
Be encouraged that Glory is coming
Though it may not look like you’re advancing
The Kingdom of God is being advanced in you
THESE SUFFERINGS ARE NOT WORTHY
THESE SUFFERINGS ARE NOT WORTHY
THIS SEASON HAS NO WORTH
IN COMPARISON
TO THE GLORY THAT WILL BE REVEALED IN US
TO THE GLORY THAT WILL BE REVEALED IN US
TO THE VICTORY THAT IS YET TO COME
TO WHAT GOD WANTS TO BIRTH WITHIN
Sometimes, it seems like God has left the scene
Sometimes, it feels like we are all alone
It is in these times, that we are to Sing a Little Louder
Cry out a little more
Pursue God in the Desperation
That He may remind you of the Glory that is to come
That He would reiterate the promises of God that are yes and amen in Christ
That the lies and the compromise that are so easy to participate in
Would fade and be muted by the Songs of Heaven!
CHECK OUT HOW CREATION RESPONDS TO THE CHAOS OF THIS WORLD
Romans 8:
Romans 8:19–23 NKJV
19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. 23 Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.
ALL OF CREATION
EVERY ONE AND EVERY THINGS
EAGERLY AWAITS FOR THE REVEALING OF THE SONS & DAUGHTERS OF GOD.
We have all gone astray
God has allowed us to choose our way
Allowed us to do what was right in our own eyes
All while knowing that Hope would one day be presented to us in the person of Christ.
For those who have believed on Him who raises the dead
They look forward to that day, when the corruptible will put on the incorruptible
When the mortal shall put on immortality
HONESTLY, I CAN’T WAIT.
THIS WEEK, ABBY GOT A LITTLE FRUSTRATED
She is starting to get frustrated with her sin
In a true daughter of Eve moment, she vented to me
“Why did Adam and Eve have to sin Dad?”
“Why, Dad?”
“It would have been so much better if they had just listened to God”
Creation groans,
We want freedom
Though this is good, the energy we spend on frustration, should be transferred to a different initiative.
What do I mean?
We groan . . . but do we labor?
We complain about this world and its darkness . . . but do we labor for its renewal?
We vote a certain way . . . but do we participate in the fleshing out of those initiatives?
IF WE TRULY BELIEVE THAT ONE DAY JESUS WILL COME BACK, WHAT ACTIONS DOES THIS BELIEF BIRTH?
WHAT COMES FROM THIS THEOLOGY?
YES WE WILL BE ADOPTED
YES WE WILL BE REDEEMED
BUT WHAT DO WE DO IN THE WAITING?
WE CONTINUE WORKING
WE CONTINUE LABORING
WE CONTINUE BEING LED OF THE SPIRIT
Jeremiah 29:4–8 NKJV
4 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all who were carried away captive, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 Build houses and dwell in them; plant gardens and eat their fruit. 6 Take wives and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so that they may bear sons and daughters—that you may be increased there, and not diminished. 7 And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the Lord for it; for in its peace you will have peace. 8 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are in your midst deceive you, nor listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed.
YOU MAY CALL THIS WORLD BABYLON
But I call it a Workload
I call it the field that God has called me to till
In its peace, I will have peace.
