Financial Control

Who here knows what an advertisement is?
I want to see if we can point out 5 ads in this room right now
An ad can be print, online.. commercials… logos.. all of these things are advertisements
Can you guys guess how much money was spent on advertising last year… Actually the one closest will win a piece of Candy
Money spent on advertising Globally
$187 billion on TV Advertising in 2018
$227 billion on Internet advertising in 2018
Why would companies around the world spend so much money on advertisements
They do it because it makes us buy stuff
They wouldn’t spend that amount of money on advertising if they didn’t get anything back in return
How do they do it?
Advertisement works by selling you this idea that you are not good enough
You are not pretty enough, you’re not smart enough, you don’t care about the environment enough, you’re not tall enough, you’re not happy enough, you are not enough
But with this new and improved aerodynamic product… you will be enough… until the next item comes out
Then it starts over again
This desire to be more drives us into this want for money
Right… Moolah, dinero, cash.... It’s what makes the world go around
Why do people go to college?
To get a good job
Why do you need a good job… money!
Do you know what one of the top causes for divorce in this country...
Behind “basic incompatability” whatever that means, and infideltity… it’s money
Money issues are splitting up families and homes and destroying lives
Finances are something that we are given as a tool in this world… but unfortunately it becomes a God
Money becomes what we sacrifice all of our time for, what we think about, what we worship
Some of you are like.. how can you worship money
You go to these big temples and you celebrate as you lay your gift on the alter in exchange for happiness only to get bored with the happiness you purchased so you go out to earn more to ritualistically bring back
I’m talking about shopping.
It’s been said that we buy things we don’t need with money that we don’t have to impress people we don’t like.
It becomes taboo to talk about money in church right? Like we don’t want people to get uncomfortable
Or we only want to tell people all the ways that the Lord is going to bless them. God don’t want you to be broke, God is going to bless you … and we think immediately that has to do with finances
But Jesus talked a lot about money. Aside from the Kingdom of God, Jesus talked about Money more than any other topic
Money is the great magnifier of our soul
Let’s dive into our scripture
Today we are going to look into the book of
This letter was written from Paul to his son in the faith, Timothy.
Timothy was the pastor of the church in Ephesus
Ephesus was a wealthy port city in Asia Minor
I mean they got that bag!
Everything that was going to enter into asia minor had to go through ephesus
The people ther
The church was one of the most influential churches in the early 1-2nd century
Timothy was a young buck who Paul wrote to and told to not let others look down on him because of his age
Timothy was a young kid who was
In the 2 letters to timothy Paul is giving him instructions on how to teach others sound doctrine and keep them holding tight to the truth that has been preached.
SO now we got some context lets see what the Holy Spirit speaking through Paul has to say about finances
vv3-5 He’s talking about false teachers who are preaching a different Gospel
He’s saying there are people out there who preach godliness only as a way to gain
That is people that believe that if I follow God he’s going to take car of all my bills, I’m going to have an increase, my financial woes are gone, I will get that car that I want, I will get the house I want, I will get those new shoes I want, I’m gonna get all of that because godliness is a means of gain
In 6
Godliness with contentment is GREAT gain
The idea of gain is in being content with what we have and following Christ
7
THis life is temporary. There are no uhauls behind the hurst
You can’t take anything with you
8
IF we have food and clothing
that word clothing there that’s used can also mean covering
This isn’t saying that God doesn’t care about homeless people as long as they have clothes
This isn’t a verse you can use to tell people in destitute that they need to be happy where they are as long as they have food and clothes
The truth is that God doesn’t want us to overlook the poor. And those of us who have the means to help and to bless it is in our responsibilities as believers to see that there are those that have food and covering
9 is really where it gets us
Those who desire to be rich
This verse is talking about those who purpose themselves toward wealth.
Those who are looking for financial control of their lives
Not fiscal responsibility, but financial control
Wanting wealth, wanting to be rich
he says that hey fall into temptation into snare and into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction
By seeking to control your financial future… again not talking about being responsible or wise… those things are important
BUt looking to have more money because it represents your ability to control your future and your fate
That is when you start to serve money
Jesus tells us that man cannot serve God and money
The desire for money the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils
Popularly misquoted verse...
Scripture doesn’t say that money is the root of all evil
the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils
Loving, desiring, longing for, lusting after, money makes it your God
When money is your God you will do all sorts of things to get it
The loving of money will drive you toward all sorts of evil
Seeking to control your life by getting as much money as possible
You transplant the gift for the giver
You never want to misplace your trust in the false sense of control that comes from money when your trust should be placed in the one who gives all value and controls everything
