10 For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party.

11 They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.

12 One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”

13 This testimony is true.

Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, 14 not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth.

15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled.

16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works.

They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

There was an important reason that Paul wrote so much about finding good leaders.

Preaching Point- Equip yourself with biblical truth to combat false teachers.

Point #1- Beware of Sinful Influences

Paul writes...

-There were sinful influences

-What did they look like?

-I had to recognize those people as negative influences

-These false teachers(sinful influences) will come from inside the church

-Not necessarily leaders, but older students

-Measure their behavior w/ the Bible

-Seek upperclassmen whose lives glorify God

Point #2- Equip Yourself With Biblical Truth

It is an important first step to know who the sinful influences are in your life, but what should you do about them?

-Paul explains...

Point #3-Live your Life According to God’s Word

Let’s read verses 15 and 16...

16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works.

They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

-Paul writes about the fake way that these people lived

-verse 15 seems confusing at first (defiled??)

-You can’t be partly purified

-Both outside and inside have to match

-Jesus had similar words for the Pharisees

-They were the ultimate example

For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.

28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
