Scripture Reading: Colossians 2:6-7
Opening Prayer
Introduction
Exposition
Colossians 2:6 ESV
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,
Therefore:
Ties the verse into what has come before
As you received Christ Jesus the Lord
This clause reminds readers what has just been said
Central point of 1:3-2:5: Jesus Christ is Lord and we have entered into His Lordship
“Landlord”
So walk in Him
Paul’s desired response of His readers is “to continue to live in Him. Continue to work out what it means in both our thinking and our acting to live under the Lordship of Christ.” (Moo)
This is a summary of a series of commands that follow this point in the text.
“Receive”
Only occurrence of this word with a personal object
Not simply receiving teaching or tradition about Jesus (not just belief in His “person”)
Instead, the personal nature here points to a commitment to follow Jesus as the “Christ” or Anointed One (a commitment to action)
“Christ Jesus the Lord”
Unique
“Christ Jesus” as/is “The Lord”
He is the “image of the invisible God” the “firstborn of all creation” the “head of the body, the church” the “mystery of God” the repository of “all wisdom and knowledge” (Moo)
So walk in Him
This has the emphasis of continuation
“Remain where you are” (Moo)
Exclusivity
Colossians 2:7 ESV
7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
4 Participles - Rooted, Built up, established, abounding
“Rooted and built up”
These are connected terms and both are completed with “in Him”
Different tenses -
“having been rooted, continue being built up in Him”
Rooted
built up
“Established”
in the faith
just as you were taught
“Abounding”
in thanksgiving
Big Idea

Walking in the Lord is continual characteristic of a genuine believer

Application
Look at your life and see if you are walking in the Lord
Are you rooted?
continually being built up?
Established?
Responding in thanksgiving?
If not, then it seems you are not a believer
If so, continue to do so
Don’t be swayed by the arguments of the world
Conclusion
Prayer of Thanksgiving
