Mark: An Intro

written by Mark (probably)
first gospel: Matthew and Luke draw from Mark
action: focuses on what Jesus did rather than what He said
18 Miracles and 4 Parables
written to gentile Christians in Rome: not many OT quotes and he translates Aramaic and Hebrew phrases to Greek
Immediately used 42 times

Miracle: What is it?

Contrary to the laws of nature
Used to demonstrate God’s involvement in our lives
Not explainable with science

Mark 4:35–41 NASB95
35 On that day, when evening came, He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd, they took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him. 37 And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up. 38 Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39 And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. 40 And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? How is it that you have no faith?” 41 They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”

Dunker Training

Sleeping on the job!

Mark 4:38 NASB95
38 Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
Jesus was human
Fear will make you say stupid things
“I will punch you in the face”
Focused on their circumstances not on Jesus because:
They were seasoned enough to be afraid if they were on their own
They had technical abilities and realized they couldn’t do it
Listen to me this morning, God puts us in places that seem impossible and their are outside of our dependance on God.
5 Reasons things happen in our lives:
God
Satan
Our choices
Other’s choices
A combination
Only time we read about Jesus sleeping is during a storm?
This was not the time for white-knuckled discipleship or belief: “I am just going to bear down and row harder!”
This breeds contempt against God b/c you can’t get through the storm alone
This breeds self-reliance not utter dependance
How has God let you down?
After my father died
God I can’t take anymore!
After my mother died?
God I can’t take anymore!
After my grandmother died?
God I can’t take anymore!
After my grandfather died?
God I can’t take anymore!
After my wife and daughter died?
God knew He needed to calm the storm!

This is ultimately about trust, this is about discipleship!

Mark 4:39 NASB95
39 And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.
A miracle to prove He is the Son of God
John 1:1–3 NASB95
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
John 1:1–2 NASB95
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.
Mark 4:39 NASB95
39 And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.
The language (epitiman) used here to rebuke the wind was language used to cast out demons, it was exorcism language. Used earlier in 1:25 and 3:12
The language (pephimoso) used to quiet the waters is in the 2nd person singular (like Jesus is talking to a personal being) and is unusual in that it is perfect passive imperative: be still and stay still.

Listen to

Psalm 107:23–32 NASB95
23 Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters; 24 They have seen the works of the Lord, And His wonders in the deep. 25 For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, Which lifted up the waves of the sea. 26 They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; Their soul melted away in their misery. 27 They reeled and staggered like a drunken man, And were at their wits’ end. 28 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. 29 He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed. 30 Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired haven. 31 Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! 32 Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people, And praise Him at the seat of the elders.
ps 107:

And then...

Mark 4:40–41 NASB95
40 And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? How is it that you have no faith?” 41 They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”
The antithesis of faith is not lack of knowledge, it is fear and doubt.
The real question for the disciples then and for us now is “will their fear lead them to trust in Jesus?”
Back to dunker training: I eventually developed more faith in my equipment than I had fear of drowning, this lead to the appropriate action.
In Mark, whenever the person and work of Jesus are highlighted, so is discipleship. The revelation of who Jesus is not in isolation but requires a response.

So my question to you this morning is “What are you going to do with this?” or “What are you so focused on in fear and worry that you are forgetting to look to Jesus?”

We do not judge His care for us based on our circumstances: richer is not better and poor worse, healthy is not better and sick worse, happy is not better and sad worse: With Christ is better and alone is worse!

Philippians 3:1 NASB95
1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for you.
