Wedding

2 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.

Wine Issue
Drunkness a Sin: Durkeness looked down on by the Jews. Jesus was called a winebibber. So this party should not be seen as a drunken frat party
Proverbs 23:21 ESV
for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags.
Prov
1 Peter 4:3 ESV
For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry.
18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
Galatians 5:21 ESV
envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Ephesians 5:18 ESV
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
Differences of Wine: Wine used to describe anything that comes from the vine
One Drink Here & There
1 Timothy 5:23 ESV
(No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.)
Wisdom to stay away
Proverbs 23:31 ESV
Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly.
Prov 23
Proverbs 23:32–35 ESV
In the end it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder. Your eyes will see strange things, and your heart utter perverse things. You will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, like one who lies on the top of a mast. “They struck me,” you will say, “but I was not hurt; they beat me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake? I must have another drink.”
Wedding Culture
Would have been a disgrace for the groom to run out of wine
Mary may have known the person
Jesus gets invovled although not his direct mission
Jesus saves the groom from shame and doesn’t even know it
Ruler of the Feast is like a wedding planner
Saving the best wine for last. Generally as the week went on water was added to the wine to make it go further
Water to Wine
Both elements are used
Jars were used for ritually purity they themselves could not make pure. The blood of Jesus can make you pure
