Context

First century. Mostly Jews.
Familiar with a shepherd, goats, sheep
Very concerned with list of rules
Don’t do that, make sure you’re not doing this, etc.
Jesus shows us Himself in the parable/warning
v31 “Son of Man”
Son of… means the connection to.
Jesus is so connected to humanity.
… but now he is coming in glory. Something more is revealed
V34, 40, “King”
The rest of the time Jesus talks about Himself coming back: King
V37, 44 “Lord”
Every one knows Jesus as Lord
The saved, the damned.
This is the situation with Jesus:
1. EVERYONE knows that Jesus came as the SON OF MAN came back as the KING and is the LORD.

Characters

Jesus: the Judge

He sends people to heaven
He sends people to hell
Those who trust in His work on the cross and know the could never earn a place in heaven, get to go there
Those who think they are good enough for heaven will never make it

The Righteous: the Sheep

These are His people
They are blessed by the Father
They will inherit the Kingdom
The perfect, wonderful kingdom that Jesus opened the door for them
God has prepared this kingdom for His people, specifically for these individuals, since the beginning of the world
- But they now desire a better place—a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
2. The righteous have a life motto: BE a CHRISTIAN
They don’t just avoid the big “DO NOT SIN” list
Christian Standard Bible. (2017). (). Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers.
They actually BE christian
They are actively living out their faith.
Caring for the poor and needy

The Unrighteous: the Goats

These are those who don’t follow Jesus
Cursed and sent to eternal fire
Going with Satan and the demons
You would think they would be condemned like this:
Bunch of drunk, stealing, lying, sleeping around, breaking the rules, horrible, awful, meany cotton-headed ninny-muggins.
But it doesn’t.
Jesus doesn’t send them to Hell because they broke the rules.
Jesus says that they earned their place in hell because they didn’t live out a real faith
They DID NOT BE a Christian
v40 VS v45

Compare

This seems like a little detail, but little leaks sink big boats. This is important.
The goal is not to NOT SIN
3. The goal is to LIVE like CHRIST
Don’t fall in VS Get across the bridge
You can’t get to the fruit without growing the tree
If you just try to live your life by following the rules, its like making wax fruit/fake fruit.
It looks fine. But at the end, it is nothing.
If you are a Christian, and you make growing your relationship with God a priority, then the fruit comes naturally from that
Fake the fruit OR Grow with God
Fake that relationship by following your list
“Don’t do that sin” “Make sure no one knows about that” “at least I’m a better Christian than them”
Grow with God
BE a Christian in your real life
Caring for the poor
Poor all around us— including Tamir
Caring for strangers
many people looking for friends or acceptance
Caring for the needy
So much need— housing, clothes, school supplies, college tuition, new shoes
Caring for the sick
Hospital visits, cards, volunteering at hospice or recovery center
**Faking my fruit means trying to do this on my own. Growing with God means living by faith.**
When you are growing with God, the fruit grows naturally

Jesus and You

Jesus was not all the individual people that they helped.
He could have been some
The angels could have been some
But Jesus is reminding us Christians: You faith is rooted in me, not in people
So, not matter what the person looks or smells like, you are still to live as Christ did
No matter their skin color, gender, gender identity, origin, sexual preference, disability, family, past or sin-issue--- you are to live as I commanded you to.
Your responsibility to Jesus is lived out in relationship to all the people in your life- even the least.
