The Art of Rest

Marla andI have been in the process of learning how to rest well. It’s very difficult for me to relax, take a guilt free day. The Lord has spoken to us to take a sabbatical / Sabbath this Summer. He also confirmed by prayer through another minister. So.... what is a Sabbath and how do we do it?
Jeremiah 6:16 NIV
16 This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
Genesis 2:2–3 NIV
2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
Exodus 20:11 NIV
11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Exodus 20:8 NIV
8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Remembering is an act of Godliness.
Mark 2:27 NIV
27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
Sabbath is a gift to you from God.
The word “Sabbath” (שַׁבָּת, shabbath), which means “cease,” “rest,” “complete rest,” or “desist,”
God created for six days then rested. He created mankind on the sixth day so mans first day was actually the Seventh which in reality he wasn’t told to work, he was told to rest.
God doesn’t need to rest, He created it for us. If we are made in His image then we should follow the pattern He created for Himself and us.
Idle hands are the devils workshop.
I’ll sleep when I die.
The French Republican calendar -1793-1805 The revolutionary system was designed in part to remove all religious and royalist influences from the calendar. The 10-day décade was unpopular with laborers because they received only one full day of rest out of ten, instead of one in seven, although they also got a half-day off on the fifth day. It also, by design, conflicted with Sunday religious observances.
Sabbath is to be a day of restoration.
Mark 3:1–5 NIV
1 Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. 2 Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. 3 Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.” 4 Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent. 5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.
seven recorded miracles on the Sabbath.

Find the rhythm of rest.
The climax of creation is not humanity, as we so arrogantly assumed. Rather, the day of rest is the climax, when creation all comes together and lives at peace and harmony with one another.
Studies reveal that 37% of Americans take fewer than seven days of vacation a year. In fact, only 14% take vacations that last longer than two weeks. Americans take the shortest paid vacations of anyone in the world. And 20 % of those who do, often spend their paid vacation staying in touch with their jobs through their computers or phones. Even when we do vacation we do it poorly.
A 52 day vacation!
A Sabbath is like breathing.
When growing up we all did the challenge of holding our breath under water at length. Could you imagine if we only breathed when we absolutely had to? What if we only breathed two weeks out of the year? Sabbath was created for us to once a week breath and relax. there is a rhythm to it.
FOMO
is "a pervasive apprehension that others might be having rewarding experiences from which one is absent". This social anxiety is characterized by "a desire to stay continually connected with what others are doing". FOMO is also defined as a fear of regret, which may lead to a compulsive concern that one might miss an opportunity for social interaction, a novel experience, a profitable investment, or other satisfying events. In other words, FOMO perpetuates the fear of having made the wrong decision on how to spend time since "you can imagine how things could be different". A psychological dependence to being online could result in anxiety when one feels disconnected, thereby leading to a fear of missing out[8] or even pathological Internet use.[9] As a consequence, FOMO is perceived to have negative influences on people's psychological health and well-being because it could contribute to people's negative mood and depressed feelings.[4]
