Intro:

It’s Father’s Day...
Some don’t have father’s so the mother steps up as both roles and we applaud you that do.
Today we are going to look at What makes a Godly man (or even woman)
I believe today, the church is lacking Godly men.
Why is women ministry full of ladies?
Why are the women so excited for conferences and get togethers?
Why is it that on Father’s Day, dad’s would rather do something else than worship God for an 1.5 Hours?
Why are there so many woman taking the role of Spiritual leadership in the home, instead of the fathers?
I think it’s time for Father’s to step up to their calling, even mother’s if you aren’t already.
Can I be honest? It’s not the churches job to raise your Children in Christ.
We’re going to do all we can to help them have a relationship with Christ, but if their parents are not doing the same, then why would they want to listen?
We need Godly men, and women, to fulfill their roles and grow in Jesus together.

11 But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen

Let’s Go

Paul calls Timothy, “Man of God.”
That phrase could also mean, Someone who is dedicated to God.
This phrase was only used twice in the New Testament… So, it’s a big deal.
This same Title was Given to Moses
2 t
Deuteronomy 33:1 NKJV
Now this is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.
Samuel
1 Samuel 9:6 NKJV
And he said to him, “Look now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honorable man; all that he says surely comes to pass. So let us go there; perhaps he can show us the way that we should go.”
Elijah
1 Kings 17:18 NKJV
So she said to Elijah, “What have I to do with you, O man of God? Have you come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to kill my son?”
David
Nehemiah 12:24 NKJV
And the heads of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, with their brothers across from them, to praise and give thanks, group alternating with group, according to the command of David the man of God.
This title: Man of God
Refers to someone who is wholly possessed by God and who spoke for Him.
It is sad that the church is lacking men and women who are wholly possessed by God.
We see a lot baby christians in the church body.
We see people who are immature in their faith, they typically the world more than they reflect God.
Paul called the Corinthians infants..
1 Corinthians 3:1–3 NKJV
And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?
1 Cor.
- He calls them worldly three times in three verses. Instead of feasting on the meat of God’s Word, they could only handle milk.
- Instead of being peacemakers, they were known for jealously and quarreling.
- Instead of being identified by godliness, they were identified by worldliness.
It’s sad that this typifies the church.
What are characteristics of the mature in faith—men and women of God? How can we develop these qualities?

5 Characteristics

The Man of God Flees From Sin

Do you want to be a man or woman of God?
You need to flee from Sin and your Flesh.
If we are not fleeing from sin, then we will fall into that sin every single time.
What things should we flee?
Loving Money
Sexual immorality
1 Corinthians 6:18 NKJV
Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.
Idolatry
1 Corinthians 10:14 NKJV
Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
Youthful Lusts
2 Timothy 2:22 NKJV
Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Do you guys remember the Joseph and Potiphers wife?
She tried to seduce him, and he ran out of the house butt-naked.
If you really want to be a man or woman of God… You need to flee from sin like Joseph.
If you aren’t willing to flee, then there is an issue with your walk.
If you give sin an inch it will take you a mile!
I think many people don’t realize how deadly sin is.
Sin leads to death. Sin is what separates you and I from God. Sin is what makes you destined for hell. If you are dead in sin, you are going to hell.
We really need to grasp the idea of sin.
The word flee is in present tense, which means you need to be continually fleeing from sin.
Practical:
There are some movies or some music people don’t listen to, because they know that it will cause them to stumble.
Proverbs 22:3 NASB95
The prudent sees the evil and hides himself, But the naive go on, and are punished for it.
Men and women of God are known by what they flee—ungodly language, ungodly entertainment, discord, sexual immorality, etc. Are you a person of God—a holy fugitive? What are you fleeing?

The Man of God Pursues Godly Character

1 Timothy 6:11 NKJV
But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.
The man of God flees sin, but at the same time, you need to pursue Godly characteristics.
When you only flee, but flee to nothing.. it’s worthless.
Separation without positive growth becomes isolation.
6 Characteristics
Righteousness
Since you are made righteous by Christ once you are saved, you should be pursuing a lifestyle of righteousness.
Are you serving others? Caring for the neglected? Sharing the gospel? Discipling Believers? Worshiping God??
The man of God is constantly pursuing these things.
Godliness
The word has the connotation of reverence for God.
It is sad to see many people in the church don’t have reverence for God anymore.
People walk up and down when worship and sermons are going on, but if we were at the movies for 2 hours, we’d sit there.
People texting and talking during worship or the sermon, because they can’t focus on God for more than 5 minutes.
The list can go on…
A Godly man or woman has reverence for God.
They desire to honor God
They desire to please God
They desire to reflect God
Faithfulness
Means dependability
His yes means yes. His No means no.
DO you keep your word? When you make a commitment to family? Church? Friends? Do you keep your word, or are you always a flake.
The greatest ability is dependability.
Are you dependable?
Love
Are you loving unconditionally?
Agape love is an act of the will. It takes work and sacrifice.
God commands us to love our neighbors, but also our enemies.
Are you loving your enemies?
Steadfastness
are you patient?
Are you enduring?
When life gets tough, are you moving forward or are you staying in the same place.
It is not a complacency that waits, but a courage that continues in hard places.
Gentleness
Better translated Meekness
Meekness is power under control.
I think the best example I can give for this is from Avengers..
Black Widow says to the Hulk, “All my friends are fighters, and here comes a guy avoiding a fight 'cause he knows he'll win.”
How do you react to difficult people?
Are you pursuing Godly Character? It doesn’t happen by chance, you have to actively Pursue it.

The Man of God Fights for the Faith

This verb means to KEEP ON FIGHTING.
we get our English word AGONIZE.
It describes a person who is straining and giving his best to win the prize or win the battle.
It’s like a football team… They are straining fighting every single down to win.
Are you fighting for faith?
This fight isn’t between believers, which happens most… We are the worst people, we love to hurt our own people instead of loving them and encouraging them.
The person of God has a fight with the enemy around them.
Without this fight, there would be many more souls lost.
We are fighting to see many souls come to know our Great God.
If we don’t fight, Christians will be led astray, which we see a lot of already...
We fight for the truth of God’s Word!
We fight for Faith.
We fight until the day we die, when we can be like Paul and say “I have fought the good Fight, I have finished the race.”
Are you guys willing to fight the good fight?

The Man of God Takes Hold of Eternal Life

1 Timothy 6:12 NKJV
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
Paul isn’t saying that Timothy isn’t saved...
He is saying that He needs to take hold of it, live it out… He needed to live out his sanctification.
Are you Spiritual disciplined in prayer?
God’s word?
Fellowshipping with the saints?
Repentance?
Serving?
Are you taking hold of eternal life? Eternal life is not just for eternity. It is a quality of life that God desires us to live now, but we must violently seize it. Are you living it out? The man of God seizes eternal life and lives it out now. One day it will be fully ours at Christ’s coming or the rapture, whichever happens first. Then our bodies will be glorified, and we’ll fully experience what we currently have in Christ.

The Man of God Intimately Knows God

1 Timothy 6:13–16 NKJV
I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.
The more one knows about God, the more God can use him or her for the Kingdom.
It is the same way God challenged Moses. He called Moses to set Israel free, but Moses declared that he was slow of speech. In response, God said, “Who made the tongue?” Moses was challenged to be faithful based on his knowledge of God’s greatness. And this is true for each man or woman of God. The more they know God, the more they will be motivated to be faithful. Our hope must be in the character of the one who calls us.
If you don’t know God, then you don’t have salvation.
