Intro -
How many have a Baptist background? Methodist? Pres? Catholic? Pentecostal/Charismatic? Big Sinner?
This is the challenge of leading a church, and of doing a series like this on the HS.
Joke - How many BaPTIST does it take to change a lightbulb? Change, who said anything about change
How many charismatics does it take to change a lightbulb? 1 hands are in the air
Pentecostals? 10. 1 to change the bulb and 9 to bind the spirit of darkness
Catholics? None They use candles
Episcopalians - 10 1 to change it and 9 to sit around and talk about how good the old one was
Church of Christ? None. LB are not mentioned in the Bible so they are unscriptural.
Chiropractors? 1 but it will take you 6 visits
Students? Don’t know … will it be on the test?
Series on the HS
Acts 19:1–2 NLT
1 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions until he reached Ephesus, on the coast, where he found several believers. 2 “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them. “No,” they replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
Lot of confusion around about HS.
Lot of bad packaging of who HS is and what he does.
Pentecost or Pentecostal…
Many think it’s where you have to wear too much make up or none at all.
Acts 2:1 NIV
1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
Pentecost was a holiday in Israel much like our holidays. Easter, July 4th. They had 7 but 3 major ones.
Each one of these has unique characteristics so When Jesus came he decided to use the holidays to give the people a picture of what he was doing. Jewish people understand these… we didn’t.

Jewish Holidays Fulfilled

Matthew 5:17 NLT
17 “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.
We don’t do the practices of the OT, but we still embrace the principles.

1. Passover: Salvation.

Passover celebrates when God delivered the Israelites out of Egypt.
God had to send plagues to convince Pharoah to release the Israelites. Lat one was killing the first born.
They had to put the blood of a lamb on their door posts.
9 am they would kill the lamb and cook it at 3 pm.
The Passover Lamb sacrificed at 9 am.
The Lamb was put into the oven at 3 p.m.
The sacrifice covered their sins.
Jesus was sacrificed at 9 am
Jesus went into the tomb at 3 pm
Jesus sacrifice removed our sins.
1 Corinthians 5:7 NLT
7 Get rid of the old “yeast” by removing this wicked person from among you. Then you will be like a fresh batch of dough made without yeast, which is what you really are. Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us.

Passover: Salvation

This one is free.
Ephesians 2:8–9 NLT
8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
God has more for you.

2. Pentecost: Power to make a difference.

Pentecost means 50. It was 50 days after Passover.
Israelite were celebrating the presence of God on Mt Sinai.
A Cloud descended with loud noise and fire
God wrote His law on tablets of stone
3000 people died.
Here is the fulfillment.
The Holy Spirit descended with loud sound and fire.
God wrote his law on our hearts
3000 people got saved.
Acts 1:3–5 NLT
3 During the forty days after he suffered and died, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God. 4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
Acts 1:8 NLT
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
This where the works come in.
You will need power to pull it off. So what does Pentecost mean?
It’s not about crazy stuff...

Pentecost: Power to make a difference.

3. Tabernacles: The 2nd coming of Jesus.

Celebrate their wandering for 40 years in the desert.
Tab is a portable house or a tent for us. They were wandering around in temp homes.
They were wandering and living in temporary huts
They were brought to their final home.
They celebrated it during the harvest season.
How is Tab being fulfilled.
We are living on this temporary earth.
We will be brought to our final home in heaven
There will be a great final harvest.
More people have been saved in the last 18 years than the previous 2000 years all the way back to Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 NLT
16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. 17 Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.

Tabernacles: The Second Coming of Christ.

It all begins with the Cross (passover).
Then he has an assignment for us… we need power in our lives to do it. Power is not for entertainment, but for mission. (pentecost)
Then he will come back. (tabernacles)

The Meaning of Pentecost

Acts 2:12 NLT
12 They stood there amazed and perplexed. “What can this mean?” they asked each other.
God wants you to have his power in your life.
Three areas.

1. The Holy Spirit empowers me to live righteously.

10 commandments. The law is no longer on tablets, but it is written in our hearts.
Romans 8:9 NLT
9 But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)
It’s more fun and easier to serve him because we want to.
Jesus said the HS will guide you into all truth.
The HS will even help you make decisions.
Isaiah 30:21 NLT
21 Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left.
ILL - of God speaking

2. The Holy Spirit empowers me to live supernaturally.

God never intended you and I to live a natural life.
Jesus said that we would do greater things than he did.
It doesn’t have to be crazy and spooky… Your eyes wont and don’t have to glaze over. You don’t have to interrupt others with words…
Acts 10:38 NLT
38 And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
1 Corinthians 2:4–5 NLT
4 And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. 5 I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.
The gospel is not dependent on my jokes, but on God’s power.
Listen:
You can be healed.
You can be delivered from addictions
Your marriage can be good… healed.

3. The Holy Spirit empowers me to live on mission.

God will help you with your issues, but God has called us to a mission:
see people saved
see hungry fed
see prisoners set free
sick healed
1 Thessalonians 1:5 NIV
5 because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.
HS doesn’t come with pride. Pride has no place. Remember the fruit of the spirit.
Pursue all that God has for you. Why? I can’t do what he wants me to do without it. We can’t …

Being filled with the Holy Spirit doesn’t make me better than you, it makes me better than me.

Come back the next 2 weeks… next week gifts. Even the one you are thinking about.
Step 1 - Passover Lamb - Salvation … lift your hands
Step 2 - Pentecost
