Today - looking at whole Acts chapter 3
Deals with an event where a miracle occurred which drew crowd
Peter - in moment - decided to use opportunity to preach Gospel
What I want focus on - how Gospel message presented by Peter

Testimony - Acts 3:1-12

chapter begins - Peter & John heading up to Temple @ 3pm for daily prayer
Also heading up to 1 of gates into Temple Outer Court - cripple carried by his friends
Everyday these friends carry crippled man up to temple gate
He’s not allowed to go in - various religious rules
But he lays at gate asking for people to give him money = alms
Alms = freewill money offering given to poor/needy -
As Peter & John approach they lock eyes with crippled man who asks for money (SLIDE)
Acts 3:6 ESV
But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!”
It’s important to note - this isn’t some sort magic incantation / super prayer
Crippled Man isn’t healed because Peter invoke Jesus name
Instead Peter has such faith in Jesus through H.Spirit - he declares his faith
Basically saying - Jesus Christ of Nazareth is one who’s going to heal you right now! (SLIDE)

Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. When all the people saw him walking and praising God, they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Acts 3:
This crippled man sat at gate begging for money for his whole life
Everyone who lived in Jerusalem would know him - seen him multiples going into Temple
Many would also seen him carried for years up tp gate by his friends

Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. No doubt in anyones mind man could not walk
So when Man turns up in temple courts walking & jumping praising God
Everyone knew something miraculous happened
This crippled man’s healing forms 1st part of gospel message in this passage
Healing of lame man = testimony to Jesus power & continuing life & activity on earth
Acts 3:6 NIV84
Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”
His walking & leaping = testimony to Jesus continuing life-giving power active on earth
Evidence Jesus has power change people’s live radically - everyone notices
So much so Peter, John, healed man mobbed by all people gathered in Temple courts (SLIDE)

Those of us who have hair - who goes to hairdressers to get it cut?
Who here as ever had bad haircut?
I’ve had some horrific haircuts! Some done by my Mum when I was younger using a bowl
Some done by less talented hairdressers
When you have a bad haircut everyone notices,
When they come up to you, you can see them looking, you feel really self conscious
Trying to hide it makes it worse - you just stand out more… terrible
One bad haircut can make you stand out in crowd - or a miraculous healing
Our witness / testimony of Jesus should be noticeable - like man’s healing; God’s power working in our lives should be evident to those around us - we should be different & joyful
As Christians - we’re called to be a living testimony for Jesus in how we live our lives
Our lives should be noticeable different to others - lives should show we’re followers of Jesus
People should see God’s power working in our lives - we should be different & even joyful
If Jesus has touched our lives - like crippled man - people should be able to tell (SLIDE)

Question - Can others tell your life has been changed by Jesus?

So as a Holy Spirit inspired Evangelist - sees an opportunity to share with others
Peter’s sermon spoken specifically to those he knows lots about = Jewish people

Then tells Jesus story - His death & resurrection only happened few months before
Adds weight to story saying He & John both witnessed whole thing - so his story is reliable
Many of those standing there would’ve seen or heard about what happened
Peter then delves into OT - pulls out all sorts of references
Mentions Moses = prophet & Law maker Jews considered most important person in history
He quotes prophecy God gave to Moses regarding prophets were to follow him
Although lots prophets came after Moses e.g. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel

The judges shall inquire diligently, and if the witness is a false witness and has accused his brother falsely, then you shall do to him as he had meant to do to his brother. So you shall purge the evil from your midst. And the rest shall hear and fear, and shall never again commit any such evil among you. Your eye shall not pity. It shall be life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. “When you go out to war against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and an army larger than your own, you shall not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. But if it makes no peace with you, but makes war against you, then you shall besiege it. And when the Lord your God gives it into your hand, you shall put all its males to the sword, but the women and the little ones, the livestock, and everything else in the city, all its spoil, you shall take as plunder for yourselves. And you shall enjoy the spoil of your enemies, which the Lord your God has given you. Thus you shall do to all the cities that are very far from you, which are not cities of the nations here. You may eat from them, but you shall not cut them down. Are the trees in the field human, that they should be besieged by you? Only the trees that you know are not trees for food you may destroy and cut down, that you may build siegeworks against the city that makes war with you, until it falls. “If in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess someone is found slain, lying in the open country, and it is not known who killed him, then your elders and your judges shall come out, and they shall measure the distance to the surrounding cities. And the elders of the city that is nearest to the slain man shall take a heifer that has never been worked and that has not pulled in a yoke. And the elders of that city shall bring the heifer down to a valley with running water, which is neither plowed nor sown, and shall break the heifer’s neck there in the valley. Then the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come forward, for the Lord your God has chosen them to minister to him and to bless in the name of the Lord, and by their word every dispute and every assault shall be settled. And all the elders of that city nearest to the slain man shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley, and they shall testify, ‘Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it shed. You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together. You shall not wear cloth of wool and linen mixed together. “You shall make yourself tassels on the four corners of the garment with which you cover yourself. “If any man takes a wife and goes in to her and then hates her and accuses her of misconduct and brings a bad name upon her, saying, ‘I took this woman, and when I came near her, I did not find in her evidence of virginity,’ then the father of the young woman and her mother shall take and bring out the evidence of her virginity to the elders of the city in the gate. And the father of the young woman shall say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man to marry, and he hates her; and behold, he has accused her of misconduct, saying, “I did not find in your daughter evidence of virginity.” And yet this is the evidence of my daughter’s virginity.’ And they shall spread the cloak before the elders of the city. Then the elders of that city shall take the man and whip him, and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the father of the young woman, because he has brought a bad name upon a virgin of Israel. And she shall be his wife. He may not divorce her all his days. But if the thing is true, that evidence of virginity was not found in the young woman, then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done an outrageous thing in Israel by whoring in her father’s house. So you shall purge the evil from your midst. “If a man is found lying with the wife of another man, both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman. So you shall purge the evil from Israel. “If there is a betrothed virgin, and a man meets her in the city and lies with her, then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbor’s wife. So you shall purge the evil from your midst. “But if in the open country a man meets a young woman who is betrothed, and the man seizes her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die. But you shall do nothing to the young woman; she has committed no offense punishable by death. For this case is like that of a man attacking and murdering his neighbor, because he met her in the open country, and though the betrothed young woman cried for help there was no one to rescue her. “If a man meets a virgin who is not betrothed, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are found, then the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has violated her. He may not divorce her all his days. “A man shall not take his father’s wife, so that he does not uncover his father’s nakedness. “No one whose testicles are crushed or whose male organ is cut off shall enter the assembly of the Lord. “No one born of a forbidden union may enter the assembly of the Lord. Even to the tenth generation, none of his descendants may enter the assembly of the Lord. “No Ammonite or Moabite may enter the assembly of the Lord. Even to the tenth generation, none of them may enter the assembly of the Lord forever, because they did not meet you with bread and with water on the way, when you came out of Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you. But the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam; instead the Lord your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loved you. You shall not seek their peace or their prosperity all your days forever. “You shall not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother. You shall not abhor an Egyptian, because you were a sojourner in his land. Children born to them in the third generation may enter the assembly of the Lord. “When you are encamped against your enemies, then you shall keep yourself from every evil thing. “If any man among you becomes unclean because of a nocturnal emission, then he shall go outside the camp. He shall not come inside the camp, but when evening comes, he shall bathe himself in water, and as the sun sets, he may come inside the camp. “You shall have a place outside the camp, and you shall go out to it. And you shall have a trowel with your tools, and when you sit down outside, you shall dig a hole with it and turn back and cover up your excrement. Because the Lord your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you and to give up your enemies before you, therefore your camp must be holy, so that he may not see anything indecent among you and turn away from you. “You shall not give up to his master a slave who has escaped from his master to you. He shall dwell with you, in your midst, in the place that he shall choose within one of your towns, wherever it suits him. You shall not wrong him. “None of the daughters of Israel shall be a cult prostitute, and none of the sons of Israel shall be a cult prostitute. You shall not bring the fee of a prostitute or the wages of a dog into the house of the Lord your God in payment for any vow, for both of these are an abomination to the Lord your God. “You shall not charge interest on loans to your brother, interest on money, interest on food, interest on anything that is lent for interest. You may charge a foreigner interest, but you may not charge your brother interest, that the Lord your God may bless you in all that you undertake in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. “If you make a vow to the Lord your God, you shall not delay fulfilling it, for the Lord your God will surely require it of you, and you will be guilty of sin. But if you refrain from vowing, you will not be guilty of sin. You shall be careful to do what has passed your lips, for you have voluntarily vowed to the Lord your God what you have promised with your mouth. “If you go into your neighbor’s vineyard, you may eat your fill of grapes, as many as you wish, but you shall not put any in your bag. If you go into your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck the ears with your hand, but you shall not put a sickle to your neighbor’s standing grain. “When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and she departs out of his house, and if she goes and becomes another man’s wife, and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter man dies, who took her to be his wife, then her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the Lord. And you shall not bring sin upon the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance. “When a man is newly married, he shall not go out with the army or be liable for any other public duty. He shall be free at home one year to be happy with his wife whom he has taken. “No one shall take a mill or an upper millstone in pledge, for that would be taking a life in pledge. “If a man is found stealing one of his brothers of the people of Israel, and if he treats him as a slave or sells him, then that thief shall die. So you shall purge the evil from your midst. “Take care, in a case of leprous disease, to be very careful to do according to all that the Levitical priests shall direct you. As I commanded them, so you shall be careful to do. Remember what the Lord your God did to Miriam on the way as you came out of Egypt. “When you make your neighbor a loan of any sort, you shall not go into his house to collect his pledge. You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you make the loan shall bring the pledge out to you. And if he is a poor man, you shall not sleep in his pledge. You shall restore to him the pledge as the sun sets, that he may sleep in his cloak and bless you. Some people struggle to believe in Jesus - he was real person in history
Some struggle to believe Bible is book can take serious - its instead just myths & stories
In reality evidence supporting Jesus life, death, resurrection is overwhelming
From non-biblical historical records/material evidence; reliability of NT manuscripts
Credible eyewitness accounts in Gospels = massive pile of evidence
Add testimonies of millions of people - convinced Jesus has changed their lives

I don’t know what you think about climate change but still many people believe its not true;

Global Temperature rise leads to ocean temperature rise leads to...
Shrinking ice sheets & declining ice at poles - leads to sea level rises,
Glacial retreat & decrease in snow cover, extreme weather events & acidification of ocean
All this evidence seems to suggest climate change real = scary
Some countries don’t care about problems & their effects on climate change
Other countries struggling to change peoples thinking/habits to act
Then Pacific Island nations terrified what will happen if climate change continues
People have same reactions to Gospel message
Proper response to gospel message of salvation = faith in Jesus - he can save us & repentance = turning away from our life of wickedness & rebellion. It’s not easy & we need God’s help through Spirit - but we’re called to choose to change - if we don’t make choice we won’t change...
Even thought there’s all this evidence in support of Gospel people still reject Jesus
Some people struggle to believe its true; others skeptical or rather ignore it
Then there’s those who want to believe but struggle letting go of their old life
Proper response to gospel message - place our faith in Jesus
I.e. we place our trust in what Jesus accomplished on cross
What Jesus did was sufficient to pay for all wrongs, muck ups, bad stuff keep doing
Jesus can save us from consequences of our disobedience towards God
We’re also called to repent = turn away from our life of disobedience / rebellion towards God
It’s not easy & we definitely need God’s help through His Spirit
But we have to make choose to change & stick with it regardless of how hard it gets
Repenting isn’t 1 off event - its constant daily decision to choose trust in Jesus not us
If we don’t make choice to repent or to change we won’t change...

And like Jewish people we’ll face consequences of our rebellion, wickedness, & evil
