Introduction
Good morning all,
What a joy to join together and worship here on Father’s day.
I want you to know that Fathers, you are a blessing.
I believe you are a blessing to the Lord and to those around you.
You see as a Father you are completely a portion of the Lord’s will for your life.
consider this....
Our j
The greatest blessings of manhood is knowing and following the Lord our God, being a husband to a godly wife and then to be a Father to their children.
God has called you to walk with Him, and what a joy it is for a father to be a godly father.
We have too many men in this world that are chasing after their own lusts and desires, homes are broken and they miss what God has called them here to do...
Our best joy is found in 3 things..
1. Walking with the Lord our God....
2. Being the husband that God made us to be… being the spiritual leader of our
home.
Loving their wife with a singular love, always faithful and putting them
first...
3. Being a godly dad.
To our own children but also to those whom the Lord
places around us.
Today I want us to look at the life of Joseph, the husband of Mary.
We don’t talk about him a lot.
But I believe he is a model for us men and father’s today.
Let me take you to Matthew chapter 1.
So when I look at this passage and others concerning the Joseph, the husband of Mary, the earthly father of Jesus.
we see some traits I believe will bless and help us at Fathers
Psalm 139:15-16
Now when we look at his life, we are not told a whole lot about Jesus, but we are told of his lineage, that he was of the line of David.
This truth was important to show Jesus as a son of David and eligible to sit on the Throne of his Father, David.
A rightful king
And that is just the case, Jesus is the rightful king and High Priest of all, Israel and the Kingdom of Heaven.
But back to Joseph, lets examine the truth of Joseph and what we can learn about him on Father’s day.
1. Joseph, He was a Just Man....
When we look at Josephs life, the Bible tells us that he was a just man.... this is the truth God has left for us in verse 19
Now from the context of the verse we know that Joseph was betrothed to Mary, in that day and time, culturally they were as good as married, promised to one another but they had not taken their vows and been together as husband and wife.
but suddenly, there is a new predicament, Mary has been found with child and he knows only one thing…
He is not the father, He would think she has been unfaithful.
But in love and trying to do the right thing, He was planning to privately, quietly divorce Mary, without bringing any undue attention to what was happening..
He loved her and he sought to do the right action… He was a just man.
What exactly does that mean when God says he is a just man.
The word “Just” also refers to “righteous”.
The Greek there speaks to a person who is morally and spiritually shaped by the law of God and its requirements.
He seeks to live rightly in front of God and man.
This was the person we know as Joseph, he sought to do what was right.
Now consider the events of your life today my friends.
Men you are not facing the circumstances that Joseph faced this day.
But you can be like Joseph in all of your actions.
You can be “just and righteous” is all that you do and say....
You can make the decision each day to live and act for glory of God in all your ways, never seeking to hurt, harm or be un-Christ-like in any of your actions.
And in that my friends God is glorified....
Listen to Paul in ...., verses 8-9
Let your life always be marked by what is good and right… Model that to your children and to those around you.
Let them see Jesus in you....
And Secondly, Joseph was a Obedient Man....
He is called a “righteous” man, which for Matthew does not imply sinless perfection but regularly refers to one who is law-abiding, upright in character, and generally obedient and faithful to God’s commandments
Dads must be just
2. Joseph was an Obedient Man.....
One of the most beautiful things in all the world is when people follow and obey the Lord their God with a whole heart.
Why?
Because, it clearly shows the devotion of their lives given freely and wholly to the Lord.
Joseph was a man who followed the Lord His God whole heatedly.
Being a just and righteous person, He loved God and sought to live His life correctly in front of the Lord.
Obedience was key to his life....
Lets look at , verses 20-25
Joseph was a man who followed the Lord His God whole heatedly.
Matthew
Now remember,
Joseph when he discovered Mary to be with child, he thought perhaps she has been unfaithful, but of course that wasn’t the case, what was happening inside of her was the work of God as the Savior was being prepared to enter the world.
So how to deal with this situation...
God showed up and spoke to Joseph,
The Bible says in verse 20, the Lord spoke to Joseph in a dream telling him that very truth, was was happening insider of her life was the work of God, he need not fear in taking her as his wife, go ahead and make her your wife...
Which Joseph did as soon as awoke, He followed the Lord’s instructions concerning Mary.
But verse 25, Matthew stresses that Matthew never knew her until after Jesus is born....
How wonderful that God would instruct Joseph to be a part of His plan of bringing the Savior into the world, being one who would help protect him, nurture and help Him until such time when God the father would fulfill His plans of saving the World from their sin...
What joy being a part of God’s plan… it comes through obedience....
But Joseph wouldn’t have seen any of this come to pass if he hadn’t been obedient in the Lord’s command.
** Let me ask you a question dad’s, what would you miss if you were not obedient to the Lord’s commands in your life.
Oh we can miss so much when we are not obedient to the Lord’s command in our life…
So think about this… what is the Lord asking of you today?
Where is the Lord leading you?
Will you be obedient.
God has called you men, dads to be strong leaders in your home, spiritual leaders who will value, sheild, nurture and bless your families.. but you must be obedient, you must be following the Lord closely in your life.
Now, this isn’t just a one time event.. let me take you to another passage… about Joseph’s obedience, to reveal to you that it was a mark of his life.
Matthew 2:13015
We know this takes place after the birth of Jesus, it is during the time that the Magi came and worshipped Jesus.
And also know that when they came, it troubled Herod.
Herod didn’t like the thoughts of another king in the land.
So He ordered all the male children two years of age and younger to be put to death..
Again the Lord comes to Joseph in a dream and tells him to flee with Mary and the child to Egypt to keep the child safe.
Joseph was obedient to the Lord’s instructions and in doing so saved Jesus from harm.
Joseph life was one that was marked by obedience.
Men, your life is one that should be marked by obedience and that is a life that honors the Lord and blesses those around you by demonstrating a life that is marked by obedience, faithfulness and love.
Be obedient....
Now just one more thought to share with you about this man Joseph.
3. Joseph was a model of being “present” in their lives..
For so many children in our world today, fathers are not there, and it is often a mark of continuation.
By that I mean one generation of Fathers are not there and then the next do the same thing.. and so it continues.
Dad’s today, If there is anything I can encourage you about today, be present with the wife and children.
Why is that important?
Presence (a Dad’s presence in the home) models care, love, stability that will have a profound effect upon your wife and children for the years to come.
