We are fighting a problem in the church that we have had throughout history of the church. too many Christians struggle to live the abundant life Jesus talked about when they don’t have to.
Acts 19:1–2 NLT
1 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions until he reached Ephesus, on the coast, where he found several believers. 2 “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them. “No,” they replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
Our goal is to have a relationship with all of God… Father, Son, Holy Spirit.
The problem most people have with the Holy Spirit is the packaging. We see people acting crazy and blaming the Holy Spirit, but those people were crazy without the Holy Spirit.
First week -Spirit - means wind in your sails… breath of fresh air. Without HS, we feel like we are doing it all by ourselves.
Second Week - Pentecost - Jesus poured out the HS on Pentecost Holiday
Third week - Charismatic - we looked at the grace gifts God gives us. You will never be truly fulfilled until you are operating in your gifts.

Baptism: to be immersed in

This is an important word … Baptism with or in or by the HS.
There are three Baptisms available for you.

Three Baptisms

Baptized into the Body of Christ.

Write salvation next to this.
Salvation is not a prayer you pray or going to church. It’s an immersion into a relationship with Jesus and the Body of Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:13 NLT
13 Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.
Body is the family of believers
Galatians 3:26–27 NIV
26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
You have clothed yourself with Jesus.
John 20:19–22 NLT
19 That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. 20 As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord! 21 Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” 22 Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
At that moment, the disciples received forgiveness. This is salvation. Pentecost had not come.
Luke 24:36 NLT
36 And just as they were telling about it, Jesus himself was suddenly standing there among them. “Peace be with you,” he said.
Then he makes reference to another experience… a separate exp.
Luke 24:49 NLT
49 “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”
Wait until you receive the power of HS
Acts 1:3–5 NIV
3 After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
The disciples had been baptized into Jesus & the Body of Christ.

Water Baptism

This is separate from Salvation. It’s a symbol of salvation… like my ring shows I am married.
It’s amazing that we can make controversy out of anything. Some say in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit when they Baptize and others say in Jesus name only… People over the wording. God is not going to let you in because the person baptizing you said the wrong thing.
Baptism is separate from Salvation! It is the 2nd step in your journey.
27 times in NT people were saved and then baptized. Here is one
Acts 2:41 NLT
41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.
Your faith is a private decision that needs to go public.
Baptism is like the wedding ring… public declaration of the private commitments we made.
Matthew 10:32–33 NLT
32 “Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.
There is a third baptism...

Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

glass full of water = salvation
glass in the pool is immersed
Acts 8:5 NLT
5 Philip, for example, went to the city of Samaria and told the people there about the Messiah.
Acts 8:12 NLT
12 But now the people believed Philip’s message of Good News concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ. As a result, many men and women were baptized.
Acts 8:14–17 NLT
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had accepted God’s message, they sent Peter and John there. 15 As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit. 16 The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, for they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.
Why? God did not want to mix your free gift of salvation with Baptism which requires some works or with the Baptsim in the Spirit which is to empower you to go do works.
The third Baptism is for the purpose of us doing some work.
1 John 5:7–8 NKJV
7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.
These are the three Baptism…
This is a spiritual journey. We all are on a spiritual journey.

Jesus wants us to be Filled with the Holy Spirit.

testimony…
Peter couldn’t even tell a young girl he new Jesus but after the HS, he preached and 3,000 were saved.
Ephesians 5:18 NLT
18 Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,
You will always try to find something that will give you a supernatural experience… you want something to make you go wow...
HS will give you that experience.
You are destined to live a supernatural life, not a natural one… HS does that.
How?

1. Remove all barriers.

God has more steps for you
You have to remove the things that are keeping you from progressing. You have steps in your spiritual journey. Some of you need to be baptized. Maybe you have doctrinal issues with receiving the Baptism in the HS… I did until I was baptized in the HS. Some are afraid…
Some need to lead a SG
Some of you want a better marriage… somethings in the way
Acts 2:38–39 NLT
38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God.”

2. Request the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Quit telling God how much of him you want. Tell God you want whatever he has for you.
We try to filter things through normal. God is not normal and what he has for you is not normal. I need supernatural Christianity… not normal.
Luke 11:13 NLT
13 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”

3. Receive Holy Spirit by Faith.

You may know a lot of what God wants you to do, but he will always leave something blank… so that you have to take a leap of faith.
Starting this church took a leap…
Ezekiel 47:3–5 NLT
3 Measuring as he went, he took me along the stream for 1,750 feet and then led me across. The water was up to my ankles. 4 He measured off another 1,750 feet and led me across again. This time the water was up to my knees. After another 1,750 feet, it was up to my waist. 5 Then he measured another 1,750 feet, and the river was too deep to walk across. It was deep enough to swim in, but too deep to walk through.
Some of you are only ankle deep - salvation. But there is more. River Church because we want to be in the river of the HS.
Some of you are knee deep. Maybe it hit you during worship… you raised a hand
Some of you are up to the waist. … Growth Track… lead a group…
All three of these … you are wet but you are in control.
He invites you to get out into the river where you cannot stand. You have to float in the river.
Why do you think we are called River Church?
Hebrews 11:6 NLT
6 And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.
He is not looking for perfection. He just wants you to take a step of faith. He rewards those who sincerely seek him.
We receive HS so that we can ...

4. Relate to Him daily.

Here is my prayer for you.
2 Corinthians 13:14 The Message
14 The amazing grace of the Master, Jesus Christ, the extravagant love of God, the intimate friendship of the Holy Spirit, be with all of you.
He will turn shy, not powerful, people into people who will make a difference in the lives of others.
1. Immerse into Jesus in a relationship. This begins private right in your seat. Pray sinners prayer
2. Next be willing to be baptized - take it public.
3. You want prayer, hands laid on you to be filled with HS
