Two Rich Men, Two Different Responses to Christ
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Jesus searches us out, He saves us!
Last week we looked at a man who was wealthy
Jesus exposed his heart, left sad
This week:
another rich man, but his response is different
1 He entered Jericho and was passing through.
2 And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich.
3 And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature.
4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way.
5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.”
6 So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully.
7 And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”
8 And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.”
9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham.
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Luke 19:
Why did the people consider Zacchaeus a sinner? What made his sin greater than others?
Chief tax collector
bought the rights from the occupying government to collect taxes
government was responsible for the enslavement, rape, and abuse of the people of Israel
Head of all the tax collectors in his region
Charge more in taxes to line their own pockets
What is Zacchaeus’ response to Jesus?
Won’t let anything stop him from seeing Him
Hears the words of Christ and is changed

Both men had something that mattered more to them than God - Money
The Gospel comes one is changed the other is shamed
7 And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”
Zacchaeus is so changed by the Gospel that his motives and desires are transformed
8 And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.”
Luke 19:
Comes to the reality of the Gospel
Jesus saved him!
Jesus had an appointment with Zacchaeus
16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
Jesus came to seek and save the lost
What does this mean for me?
Jesus has an appointment with you
You will reject His salvation and pursue your idols
You will surrender to Him and follow Him

Zacchaeus did not let anything hinder his view of Jesus, what are some things you know of that are blocking your view of Christ? Why do you allow those things to block your view of Christ? How can the Gospel free you from those hinderances?
Zacchaeus’ response to the message of the Gospel was to give what he had to the glory of God. How does the Gospel change a person like this? In what ways should we see the Gospel flowing out of us? Why do we doubt God’s goodness in these areas?
