The Parable of the Weeds

Turn with me to
Robbie Fulks - God Isn’t Real
A world filled with wonder, a cold, fathomless sky A man's life so meager, he can but wonder why He cries out to Heaven its truth to reveal The answer: only silence, for God isn't real.
Go ask the starving millions under Stalin's cruel reign Go ask the child with cancer who eases her pain Then go to your churches, if that's how you feel But don't ask me to follow, for God isn't real.
have you ever asked yourself the question, “if God is so good and he rules over the whole world, why is evil still present? Why do bad things still happen?”
The Kingdom of God
Matthew wrote his gospel to let his readers know that when Jesus came to earth he brought the kingdom of God with him. Wherever Jesus is, the Kingdom is there, too.
- Jesus came from the line of King David
- Jesus was worshipped as King by the Magi
- John the Baptist announces that the Kingdom of heaven is at hand
- Jesus shows the power of his kingdom through miracles, teaching and healing
- Jesus teaches the parables of the Kingdom
today we turn our attention to the Parable of the Weeds
Matthew 13:24–30 ESV
24 He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, 25 but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. 26 So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. 27 And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ 28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, “Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’ ”
That’s an interesting parable.
The crowd that day was...
can you imagine what they’re thinking???......
he tells a couple of more parables to the crowd that we will look at next week before leaving to go back to the house...
then the disciples ask him to explain the parable of the weeds
Matthew 13:36–43 ESV
36 Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.” 37 He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40 Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, 42 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.
Field = The World
Two types of seed.....
The Son of Man, Jesus, sows the good seed
A world filled with wonder, a cold, fathomless sky A man's life so meager, he can but wonder why He cries out to Heaven its truth to reveal The answer: only silence, for God isn't real.
Good Seed = sons of the kingdom, those with a fruitful heart (from last week’s parable), those who are submitting to the reign and rule of the true King of the Kingdom, Jesus.
The Enemy, Satan, the devil, sows the weeds
The weeds = sons of the evil one*********
Seed of the Woman vs. Seed of the Serpent
John 8:39–47 ESV
39 They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, 40 but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. 43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”
John 8:39-47
Weeds = all who will not repent… all who will not follow Jesus
so for the time being, in God’s Kingdom, two different people exist at the same time,
God’s children
children of God
children of the devil
Satan’
Wheat & Weeds
And that is the answer to the question we began with.... If God’s Kingdom is here, why is there still evil?
this parable tells us the answer is that Jesus allows it
question #2: If God is holy and hates sin and evil, why does He allow it?
the answer is that he allows it for OUR benefit!
Matthew 13:27–30 ESV
27 And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ 28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, “Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’ ”
The answer is, if Jesus brought the harvest today, if he judged the world today, some people that he is waiting for to receive salvation would not… they would be eternally lost....
vs. 29 - lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them....
2 Peter 3:8–9 ESV
8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
Go ask the starving millions under Stalin's cruel reign Go ask the child with cancer who eases her pain Then go to your churches, if that's how you feel But don't ask me to follow, for God isn't real.
God doesn’t allow evil in the world because he just wants us to suffer, he allows it because he is patient. he’s waiting so someone like me, a weed, a sinner, would have the chance to become wheat
by trusting in Jesus and his act of taking my place on the cross so that i could have eternal life
Yes, evil is being permitted ..... for now
look at what Jesus has to say about the end of evil in vs. 39
Matthew 13:39–43 ESV
39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. He who has ears, let him hear.
matthew 13:39-43
The end is coming. There will be a day of judgment. And on that day the 2 groups of people will be separated.
children of God
children of the evil one
wheat weeds
those who have accepted Jesus’s righteousness as their own
those who continued to reject Jesus as King
that’s the only criteria that will be used on that final day
won’t matter if you were:
rich or poor
good looking or ugly
athletic or clumsy
successful or a failure as a business person
no… the question will be, “are you a child of God?”
so what is this parable saying to us today?
if you are a child of God, if you are the good seed, the wheat… 2 things:
1 — there is hope (the end of evil is coming)
there is hope (the end of evil is coming) Matt Redman - One Day
Matt Redman - One Day
One day You'll make everything new, One day You will bind every wound The former things shall all pass away No more tears
One day You'll make sense of it all, One day every question resolved Every anxious thought left behind No more fear
When we all get to heaven What a day of rejoicing that will be When we all see Jesus We'll sing and shout the victory
it’s not our job to judge (to root up the weeds)
2 — it’s not our job to judge (to root up the weeds)
if our Father wants as many to come to salvation as possible, shouldn’t we want that as well. have we forgotten that we were once a weed?
event scheduled this weekend… make america straight again
“We hold to the old ways of practice and worship set forth by scripture”
that’s a lie
if they had read this book they would hear Jesus saying some pretty scary things about people like that act like they do...
our job is not judgment of non believers.... our job is loving everyone.... like our father does.... if you know Jesus, if you know you’ve been rescued, if you know you were once a weed and are now wheat, why in the world would wish hell and judgment on someone?
In luke 9, James and John, Jesus’s disciples had to be taught this lesson:
Luke 9:51–56 ESV
51 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. 53 But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55 But he turned and rebuked them. 56 And they went on to another village.
Luke 9:51-56
love everyone.... wishing no one would perish.... that’s what a child of God does
now, if you are currently rejecting Jesus as King
Two types of seed.....
if you are still part of the weeds
if you are in fact on your way to eternal separation from God
The Son of Man, Jesus, sows the good seed
here’s what this parable has to say to you....
Good Seed = sons of the kingdom, those with a fruitful heart (from last week’s parable), those who are submitting to the reign and rule of the true King of the Kingdom, Jesus.
it doesn’t have to be that way
everyone was born into this world headed down that path… everyone.... no one was born righteous
The Enemy, Satan, the devil, sows the weeds
just like there was a day when any child of God was transformed from being a weed into being wheat…from being a child of the devil to being a child of God... today could be your day
the prayer of salvation is a humble prayer
The weeds = sons of the evil one*********
John 8:39–47 ESV

John 8:39-47
“god I want to be your child”
“Jesus, I want to make you king of my heart”
“please rescue me from my sin”
today could be your day… the day that from today on, you will know that on that final day, you will be gathered into the Master’s barn, and shine like the sun in the kingdom of your father...
let’s pray
One day You'll make everything new, One day You will bind every wound The former things shall all pass away No more tears
One day You'll make sense of it all, One day every question resolved Every anxious thought left behind No more fear
And one day we'll be free, free indeed, Jesus
One day all this struggle will cease And we will see Your glory revealed On that day
When we all get to heaven What a day of rejoicing that will be When we all see Jesus We'll sing and shout the victory
And one day we'll be free, free indeed, One day all this struggle will cease And we will see Your glory revealed On that day
