Background / Context

Romans 1:20 ESV
For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Romans 1:7 ESV
To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Each man is culpable:
Romans 2:6–8 ESV
He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.
rom 2:
No difference Jew or Gentile:
Romans 2:11 ESV
For God shows no partiality.
Romans 3:9–12 ESV
What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
Salvation is necessarily of grace
Romans 4:16 ESV
That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,
rom 4:16
If then salvation is not by grace thru faith, there is no salvation, but it is and many in Paul’s intended audience and mine today have experienced this grace, and are now standing in it.

Peace with God

Justified by His blood. Justified by faith.

Romans 5:9 ESV
Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
Romans 5:1 ESV
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
The nature of biblical faith is that it is always in God, and that it is in fact a gift from God.
If we are believing in God, that necessarily means it is trusting in the finished work of Christ.
Thus, the blood in question is that which was shed at Calvary for the saving of sinners. Christ Himself and His ministry are the object of the faith that is the conduit, the means God has chosen to justify sinners.

Justification is past tense; Peace is present and ongoing

In both verses 1 and 9, the justification is past tense.
Paul is speaking to Christians; those who have already been born again.
Thus, everything that flows from this justification is applicable to all believers, but ONLY to born again believers.
The peace with God flows out of this justification. It is now and it is ongoing, in fact it is forever

Status, not experience

Hope of the Glory of God

What is this peace? it is nothing less than the absence of struggle; the ceasing of a war setting.
Romans 8:7 ESV
For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.
Romans 5:10 ESV
For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
rom 5:
Psalm 5:4–5 ESV
For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers.
This peace is the absence of need to appease God
Isaiah 53:10–11 ESV
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.
Matthew 3:17 ESV
and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
While God chastens those who are His, He never requires their working for His favor.
Christian obedience is because of righteousness and worship, never meritorious for status
All who have been justified by faith in Christ Jesus have peace with God and will forever! There is no need to labor for approval; the Father is already pleased!

Hope of the Glory of God

Romans 5:2 ESV
Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Hope = supernaturally empowered confidence
John 17:4–5 ESV
I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.
1 Thessalonians 4:17 ESV
Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
We have a supernaturally empowered confidence that we will be with the Lord forever in paradise!
There is NO SHAME in this hope
Romans 5:5 ESV
and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
Those with no such confidence, no such hope… do not have the gift of God’s Spirit indwelling their hearts. Wherein should we be ashamed?
The Spirit empowers this confidence by granting clarity, not by pumping up ego and emotion!
This confidence is most logical, why seek an illogical position?
This confidence is based on evidence; why ignore evidence for blind faith?
This is given by God, why desire a lesser authority?
All who are standing in grace; who have been justified by faith in Christ and have peace with God, have been given a supernaturally empowered confidence that we will enter into, share, and enjoy the glory of God forever; we know that we know that we know!

We Rejoice

Romans 5:11 ESV
More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Why would we not? Seeing these benefits all given in grace, it only makes sense that we would worship and rejoice in God’s goodness toward us.

But why would we rejoice in our sufferings? (v3)

Romans 5:3–4 ESV
Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,
endurance = the ability to bear up under difficult circumstances
character - KVJ says experience = testedness, provenness
Philippians 2:22 ESV
But you know Timothy’s proven worth, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel.
2 Corinthians 13:2–3 ESV
I warned those who sinned before and all the others, and I warn them now while absent, as I did when present on my second visit, that if I come again I will not spare them— since you seek proof that Christ is speaking in me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you.
suffering brings endurance
Christian endurance is largely reliance on God; we know He is working all things, including suffering to our good
in our enduring, which is largely reliance on God, he proves to us His faithfulness
His faithful presence in our sufferings gives us this confidence. If He is with us in suffering, He will bring us to be with Him forever.
His faithful presence in our sufferings gives us this confidence
All who have been justified by faith have peace with God and a confidence in God’s plan for our future in paradise. We rejoice in this and even in suffering, knowing that God has designed our suffering to bring about blessed hope.
