Review: We’ve been talking about the sermon on the mount. Our point has been that Jesus is creating a new community. A community that he is calling us into and wants us to be a part of. We are a new group - The Kingdom of God. If you remember we’ve following Jesus’ outline:

Last week we began in and Jesus’ first practical topic was anger. We talked about how Jesus lays out a “This is what they’ve been saying…but this is what I tell you..” He cuts through all of the mess and gets to the root of our issues. When it comes to anger, he starts with murder and works his way back to say that anger, unchecked, can lead to all sorts of issues in our lives.
Opening Question/Illustration: Tonight, we are going to talk about topics. Lust and divorce. So let’s start right off with a controversial question.
Transition to Text: Let’s see what Jesus has to say about these issues

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
“It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Jesus gets to the root
You’ve heard it said…Don’t commit adultery
Jesus goes further and says - If you’ve lusted, you’ve committed adultery.
He again, as with anger, makes a line straight to the root of the problem.
He says, you don’t just need to keep yourself for your spouse physically, you need to keep yourself for your spouse even with what’s going on inside your heart and head.
Jesus’ commands are harder to follow than the law itself!
Jesus offers a solution: Avoid sin at any cost
