Intro:
At
The Tomb
And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
Intro: And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
There are three things that I want to examine real quick about this scene that we have before us.
1.
I want to examine the When factor.
(when the sabbath was past)
I am not going to review the much-debated Good Friday issue.
That is not my purpose here this morning.
I will just simply say, there is no way to get a full three days and three nights from Friday to Sunday Morning.
My purpose is to simply see that these ladies were still living under the law.
To many times Christians try and serve God while still holding to the law.
2. I want to examine the Who factor.
(Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome,)
- Mary Magdalene who had seven devils cast out of her
- Mary the mother of James (the other mary this is not the mother of Christ but the mother of James the less and Joses) This Mary was one of the women that provided food for the disciples and Christ for a good portion of Christs ministry.
- Salome was the mother of James and John.
She petitioned for them to Christ in
These three women show that it does not matter where you come from, Christ can be so important to you that you would risk danger to your self and maybe even death to serve Christ.
3. I want to examine the Why factor.
(had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.)
These women braved the night and the possibility fo capture or death to anoint Christ.
They were risking it all to perform a ritual.
For sure these women had heard Christ speak of His resurrection, but yet their faith was so small that they were just going to anoint him and go on with their life.
How many Christians today worship God out of rituals giving little thought to who it is they are worshipping.
With all this being said, I want to look at five lessons that we can learn from this account at the tomb.
Lesson I: When your hope is lost, know what to do.
And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.
Have you ever wondered why some days seem to go better then others?
I have found that my days seem to go a whole lot better when I spend time with God in the early hours of my day.
This word early does not specifically mean early hours of the day, it simply means first.
Before anything else is done in your day, seek him.
Psa_9:10 And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.
God is merciful and kind, He will not turn you away if you seek him with the right motives.
Psa_63:1 A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah.
O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
David knew that his only hope for survival was God.
He knew that seeking him was going to be what got him through this trial.
When you find yourself in a situation, when you find that any hope for a good outcome is lost, do you seek God, or do you try and find a way to take care of it yourself?
Lesson 2: When your strength fails, know what to believe
And they said among themselves, who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?
4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.
And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
He had performed many miracles in front of these ladies, they had seen dead men rise, sick become well, lame walk and deaf hear.
He said he would rise on the third day, but those things had been placed on the back burner.
All they knew was that their savior was dead and they needed to anoint his body and there was a large obstacle in their way.
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
Im not sure what was going through their minds at this point, but we can just imagine the conversation as they came over the hill and saw the stone rolled away.
How many times do you fret over something that seems so big that you think there is no way you are going to get around it and all of a sudden you notice that what you thought was an obstacle is now an open door?
Lesson 3: When your faith weakens, know who to believe
And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.
These ladies were not affrighted at the angel, they were shocked by what they saw.
They had been expecting to see Christ’s body, and they get an angel.
Mark uses young man, this I believe was to add to the purity of this angel, he was already dressed in white.
This signified to these women that they could believe what ever this young man said.
For what he was telling them was the truth.
When our faith begins to waver, we have something more pure and perfect then what these women saw or this day, we have the Word of God.
We have no reason to doubt what it says to us, Christ himself said, sanctify them by thy truth, for thy Word is truth.
Rom_10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.
Rom_16:26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:
1Co_2:5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
Lesson 4: When your vision becomes blurred, know what to look for.
And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.
2Co_4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
Many times our vision becomes blurred because we seem to focus on the temporal things.
Just as these women were instructed to do, we need to behold the place they laid him and know that the God we serve is not temporal but eternal.
Joh_4:35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest?
behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
One thing that I have found, is that if we look at the world with eternal eyes, we will see fields ready for harvest and this will keep our vision clear.
Tit_2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
And when our vision is clear, we can look up to the sky and say to ourselves
Heb_12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Lesson 5: When your past seems to bad, know that God still loves you.
But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.
Peter had done the very thing he said he would never do.
He had turned his back on the one he had followed for over three years.
I am sure at this point Peter was thinking how can I ever be what Christ had told me I would be?
How could I ever be right with God again?
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
