Intro: Today we come chapter 10 in our journey through the book of 2 Samuel

So if you wanted to break up the book into 2 parts…you would see 1-10 mark the triumph of David, and 11-24 highlight the failure of David...And what happens today will provide the back drop for the next 3 chapters including perhaps the most notorious of David’s sins with a woman named Bathsheba

(Prop) And what we’re gonna see as we walk through this passage is a war break out between Israel and the Ammonites....And as we journey through the passage, we’re gonna talk about 2 things

(Prop) And what we’re gonna see as we walk through this passage is a war break out between Israel and the ammonites....and we’re gonna read through this passage and if we have time today we’re gonna talk how wars start, and how wars end...

How the war started v.1-7

“War’s don’t start themselves…people start wars”

How to win a war

How the war was one - Though Israel won’t start this war…their gonna need to win it…and we’ll talk about how they begin to do that

“War’s don’t start themselves…they are always started by people and if we can deal with the people issue, we can stop the war”

What are we gonna learn today? - As we walk through this passage, we’re gonna see things in this chapter that if left unchecked in our lives will create uanessacry wars, devisions and arguments we’ll also see things can bring victory

And as we walk through that, gonna see things in this chapter that if left unchecked will create the same uanessacry wars, devisions and arguments and we’ll also see things that we need to can bring victory in those areas

How to start a war

Here in first few verses we see the context...

2 Samuel 10:1–2 ESV

1 After this the king of the Ammonites died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place. 2 And David said, “I will deal loyally with Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father dealt loyally with me.” So David sent by his servants to console him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the Ammonites.

Now you remember last week we saw David’s amazing kindness to Johnathans son Mephibosheth after that has played itself out, we see David showing kindness again, but not because of a friendship…this time it seems like there was more of a political partnership here

Nahash was most likely the king mentioned in …and obviously something though we’re not why but in order to honor the passing of this fallen king, David sends his servants and look why

V.2 “So David sent by his servants to console him concerning his father. ” - So The kings intention are nothing but loving and kind...

So David is reaching out in peace…but a war is about to break out…and here we begin to see to the reasons for it..

Poor Counsel

Poor counsel will start wars…let’s read verse 2 again

2 Samuel 10:3 ESV

3 But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Has not David sent his servants to you to search the city and to spy it out and to overthrow it?”

2 Samuel 10:2–3 ESV

2 And David said, “I will deal loyally with Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father dealt loyally with me.” So David sent by his servants to console him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the Ammonites. 3 But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Has not David sent his servants to you to search the city and to spy it out and to overthrow it?”

David said “we come in peace” but these leaders who were assembled around the New young king said “He’s not coming in peace, he’s coming to spy out the land and take advantage of you” thats wrong counsel

Where does poor counsel come from? I’ll give 2 reasons

People

Ignorance - Theres a reason James tells us to be slow to speak and and quick to listen, because poor counsel is much more dangerous than no counsel…these guys didn’t know the whole deal but they were still willing to give an emphatic answer based on poor information “this is what we should do”

Illustrate: Think about these princes here, there speaking out of fear, assumption, perhaps personal prejudices…and they were saying passionate…but passionately wrong

Wickedness - There who have personal agenda’s and though they are smart enough to see the truth, they end up giving the counsel that is the most self seeking...

Illustrate: I think about Ziba in the previous Chapter - Lied to David about Mephibosheth to get his fortune

Be carful about the counsel you take

Be careful you give

But here’s the truth - If Hunan would have just known the king himself…the truth would have been clear…thats the same with us…life is complicated and everyone is capable of giving bad advice…but the more you know the king, the better position you will be in to make the right decision

So Hanun has been giving poor counsel…but this is where he really seals the deal when it comes to war…poor counsel coupled with...

Harsh actions

Harsh people start wars

2 Samuel 10:4 ESV

4 So Hanun took David’s servants and shaved off half the beard of each and cut off their garments in the middle, at their hips, and sent them away.

So there are 2 harsh acts here…that break the diplomatic ties with Israel...Now at first glance this looks like fraternity hazing and some of you were thinking “man i didn’t that in collage” but for Israel these 2 acts were like pearl harbor…they cut off half half their beards and cut the bottom half of their garments

Except for the performance of certain religious rituals (cf. ; : ) or to express profound emotional distress (cf. ), Israelite men always wore beards. To remove an Israelite male’s beard forcibly was to force him to violate the Torah (cf. ) and to show contempt for him personally (cf. ).

And Circumcision was a physical sign of the spiritual reality that they were God’s people..and so cutting of their garments at the bottom was essentally

One biblical archeologist says this...

“The combination of shaving the beard and exposing the buttocks “suggests symbolic castration.”188 In the ancient Near East, such acts of disdain, defiance, or disloyalty typically elicited strong responses from the affronted party or power, and David’s response to Hanun’s affront was to be expected.”

So by doing this they are:

There’s 2 things here for us to remember:

Just like david’s servant’s suffered reproach for his sake will suffer reproach for the sake of our king - Some people hate Jesus, so don’t be surprised if they hate you, some people are just gonna be bent that way

There are some actions you just can’t come back from…so in the words of Paul to the Ephesians “Be angry and do not sin” (4:26)

Angry thoughts are dangerous, but harsh actions are lethal…so before you send that email, or you start that argument…check yourself…because some fights are worth fighting....but this one wasn’t

Harsh people are everywhere even in church

You might be one of them - how can you tell? - Your first instinct is to criticize; your last instinct is to encourage. Quarrelsome people almost always see others in need of rebuke, rarely in need of refreshing.

Your only model for ministry and faithfulness is the showdown with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Or the only Jesus you like is the Jesus who cleared the money changers from the temple. Those are real examples in Scripture. But the Bible is a book, and sarcasm and whips are not the normal method of personal engagement.

Look at David’s response

2 Samuel 10:5 ESV

5 When it was told David, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, “Remain at Jericho until your beards have grown and then return.”

You know what I love about David, theres a war brewing, theres nation to take down, but in the midst of that he doesn’t say get up and fight for your honor…he saw that the were greatly ashamed and he just cared for them…He says you wait here until your beard grows back

And there’s 2 things here for us to see:

First notice the care of king David…These broken and ashamed men are treated with such a gentile hand by king David and that looks so much like King Jesus

Here’s one of my favorite descriptions of Jesus

Isaiah 42:3 ESV

3 a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice.

This is our king, this is also our example

Notice also that David says “Remain at Jericho until your beards have grown and then return.” - there are some of you here today, you’ve been hurt and shamed and in a sense you beard has been shaved off, and you feel like the wound will never be restored...you need to know that it will grow back...

Let the beard grow back

Jesus’ beard was ripped so that your beard could grow back…

Here we see another few other elements to this unnecessary war...

Prideful stubbornness

2 Samuel 10:6 ESV

6 When the Ammonites saw that they had become a stench to David, the Ammonites sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of Maacah with 1,000 men, and the men of Tob, 12,000 men.

So here where it says “they saw they had become a stench to David” is better translated “they realized they had become a stench to David” in other word’s “things just got real” Now of all the times to say “Guys, we’ve gone too far” It would have been now, David was a merciful king, if they would have come in sincere humility, if believe mercy would have been granted, but instead of admitting their in over their head against an enemy whom they couldn’t beat on their own…they dig their heel in even more and bribe a bunch of Syrian Mercenaries to fight with them…still saying “we can take them” when they really couldn’t

App: Pride might be the most devastating sin in all the bible:

It keeps you from being honest…it keeps you from healing...it keeps you out of heaven and it keeps you fighting even when you fighting for a lost cause

Illustrate: How many times have you let an argument go one way past the point it should have simply because you are unwilling to say “I was wrong”

Illustration: “In ministry, if you don’t learn how to say “I was wrong and I’m sorry…and mean it…you won’t last”

Wars are predicated by people who pride themselves on the fact that the have never changed their mind - Of course, truth never changes, and neither should many of our convictions. But quarrelsome people stir up strife because, already knowing everything, they have no need to listen, learn, or ask questions.

And here’s one more element that will usually land itself to wars breaking out...

Complicated People

2 SAM 10:7

2 Samuel 10:7 ESV

7 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the host of the mighty men.

So this time, David hears whats happening, and he doesn’t send servants…he sends his ultimate warrior Joab and his host of mighty men…it’s the first time in the bible David’s men are mentioned like this…they would eventually be a group of Bad dudes…we’ll talk about them in a minute

I just want to talk about Joab for a minute - In a few verses he’s gonna say some of the most stirring words in all the bible...But understand this about Joab....He was a complicated...

He was valiant…yet he lacked self control

In a few verses he’s gonna say some of the most stirring words in all the bibile

He had moments like we’re gonna see today where he’s bold and courageous…and yet we’ve seen him be a detriment to the house of David by Killing Abner, and we’re gonna see him kill his cousin Amasa Judas style in Chapter 21…and David at the end of his life will finally say “I don’t trust him…we have to get rid of him”

But understand this about Joab....He was a complicated dude

All that to say he was complicated

And in this we one more thing

App: As long as people are a part of God’s plan…it will always be complicated

It’s been said that “Facts are stubborn, yet Feelings are fluid so they have a hard time coexisting with each other”

We’re all complicated…so we all need grace

We have

Some of the most gifted people are the most complicated

Ministry makes you complicated - The longer I’m in it the more complicated I seem to be

Now lets talk about David’s mighty men:

When we first met them in in the cave of adullam

1 Samuel 22:1–2 ESV

1 David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him. 2 And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul, gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him about four hundred men.

1 David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him.

God’s people are complicated no doubt, but as they walk with God over the course of time they become mighty

App: and thats how God creates might in us, over time…it’s a process…it’s though the refining fire

So are people complicated…yes…but can they still be mighty? yes

App: And in that same sense…when we came to Jesus, we came in distress and in debt and bitter of soul, but when he became the commander of our soul, a transformation began…over time we’re becoming mighty

Alright so the war began, and as we saw this war was unnecessary but never the less, it’s time to fight and in the words of the great scholar mr. Miagi “If you have to fight…win” and here we see a few things that win this war for Israel

How to win a war

Be united

unity

2 Samuel 10:8–11 ESV

8 And the Ammonites came out and drew up in battle array at the entrance of the gate, and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the open country. 9 When Joab saw that the battle was set against him both in front and in the rear, he chose some of the best men of Israel and arrayed them against the Syrians. 10 The rest of his men he put in the charge of Abishai his brother, and he arrayed them against the Ammonites. 11 And he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me, but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come and help you.

2 sam 10:8-

Notice that their are 2 companies…Joab and Abishai 2 different men, fighting 2 different battles on 2 different fronts…yet they pledge to help each other

Psalm 133:1 ESV

1 Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!

App: Here’s the point: One of the biggest tactics from Satan is for God’s people to lose sight of the fact that WE NEED ONE ANOTHER

Though we might be on different fronts we are fighting for the same king, and against the same enemy

There are some who don’t feel like please God unless their at war with some other Christian faction…and the’ve developed a reputation for calling out other brothers in christ...

Jesus says this

John 13:35 ESV

35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Fight for unity...Unity in the family of God is a cause worth fighting for

Here’s something else that will win a war...

Be courageous

Courage

2 Samuel 10:12–14 ESV

So Joab goes before his men right before the battle…now their surrounded, and he says “Be of good courage”

App: In that same way, we as God’s people have been giving a offensive game plan...

Matthew 28:19–20 ESV

19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

It’s important to remember the God’s people have a very real purpose on this earth…and we have a very real enemy…and the battle exist outside the 4 walls of the church…

When we get too rooted in our defensive posture…we start finding things to fight about in the church

Theirs a big word to save…Go save it

12 Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the Lord do that which seemeth him good.

Now, theres this broken logic of what it means to be manly

We think it means that you always act mucho and you never cry, and you bring home the beacon

A lot of the breaks that have taken place society originate with this issue

Breakdown in families - Men

If a child is the first person in a household to become a Christian, there is a 3.5% probability everyone else in the household will follow If the mother is the first to become a Christian, there is a 17% probability everyone else in the household will follow However, when the father is first, there is a 93% probability everyone else in the household will follow!

A few things about courage

It’s more choice then feeling - Think about this, they have ammonites at their front, and all of these mercinaries at their back…so no doubt their was fear there....yet Joab simply says “Chose courage”

So Joab goes before his men right before the battle…and He tells

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” ― Nelson Mandela

App: And in that same way you and I will face fearful situations, and in those times even though you might be afraid…Chose Courage

And we have the confidence of knowing that God is on our side

The call to courage was first given to the men

It seems like every loss in society is predicated upon men unwilling to be men

In the home

In the church

In our culture

What does courage amoungst men look like these days?

Men love, obey and prioritize God’s word and work

Men who take the role of Spiritual headship seriously

Men who work hard to care for their families in all areas

Men who live a life thats set apart

Be courageous because the battle is about more then just you - V.12 Be of good courage, and let us be courageous for our people, and for the cities of our God - In other words Joab, remember you’re fighting for more then yourself

Last but not least, here’s the best way to win a war

Invite the king into the battle

12 Be of good courage, and let us be courageous for our people, and for the cities of our God, and may the Lord do what seems good to him.” 13 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. 14 And when the Ammonites saw that the Syrians fled, they likewise fled before Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab returned from fighting against the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem. 15 But when the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together. 16 And Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the Euphrates. They came to Helam, with Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer at their head. 17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan and came to Helam. The Syrians arrayed themselves against David and fought with him. 18 And the Syrians fled before Israel, and David killed of the Syrians the men of 700 chariots, and 40,000 horsemen, and wounded Shobach the commander of their army, so that he died there. 19 And when all the kings who were servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and became subject to them. So the Syrians were afraid to save the Ammonites anymore.

They came to Helam, with Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer at their head. 17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan and came to Helam. The Syrians arrayed themselves against David and fought with him. 18 And the Syrians fled before Israel, and David killed of the Syrians the men of 700 chariots, and 40,000 horsemen, and wounded Shobach the commander of their army, so that he died there. 19 And when all the kings who were servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and became subject to them. So the Syrians were afraid to save the Ammonites anymore.

So here’s the picture…Joab and Abishai have pushed back the enemy, but the enemy doesn’t retreat as much as regroup…and now formerly beaten kings are joining the battle against Israel like Hadadazer king of Zobah (2 sam 8:3) and he’s gathering a new set of foes] and their all regrouping at Helam…so what do they do? - Invite the king into the Battle - 7 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan and came to Helam and what we see is that when the king was invited into the battle…though the numbers were large and the enemy was fierce…It was over

App: This is the same Spiritually, Though wars and battles are real things, and they cause fear and pain, and they seem relentless…When king Jesus is invited to the battle…victory is yours

Your battle becomes his battle

Your problem becomes his problems

His resources become your resources

7 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan and came to Helam

How do we do that?

Ask him in

Follow his Lead - The same way David gathered all of Israel

Conclusion: So today we’ve spoken about confrontation

We don’t want to start those unless we have to too:

poor counsel

harsh actions

pride

those things will start and perpetuate wars

But one does start:

We’re better together

Be Couragous

Invite Jesus into the battle
