The Family of God
Series: The Gospel of John
John 1:10-13
Sermon by Rick Crandall
Grayson Baptist Church - March 30, 2016
(Revised June 14, 2019)
*Bill and Gloria Gaither wrote the words to this very well-known song:
"You will notice we say brother and sister 'round here,
It's because we're a family and these folks are so dear.
When one has a heartache, we all shed a tear
And rejoice in each victory in this family so dear.
From the door of an orphanage to the house of the King,
No longer an outcast, a new song I sing;
From rags unto riches, from the weak to the strong,
I'm not worthy to be here, but praise God I belong!
I'm so glad I'm a part of the family of God,
I've been washed in the fountain,
Cleansed by His blood.
Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod,
For I'm part of the family, the family of God." (1)
*There is nothing better in this world than being part of the family of God!
And in tonight's Scripture, John introduces us to the amazing truth that all of us can be part of the family of God! Just think about it...
1. BEING IN GOD'S FAMILY IS A SPECIAL PRESENT.
*Being in God's family is a special gift from God. John pointed us to this great news in vs. 12, when he said, "But as many as received him, to them GAVE He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."
*All Christians have been given a part in the family of God.
That's why in 1 John 3, the Apostle John rejoiced and said:
1. Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
2. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
*Christians: Right now, we are children of God, and this everlasting blessing always comes as a gift from God.
The Bible also makes this truth clear in Romans 6:23, where Paul said, "The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
*1 John 5:10-12 puts it this way:
10.
He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son.
11.
And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
12.
He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
*"God has given us eternal life!" Now, I've gotten some great presents in my life, but nothing that can touch this gift, or even come close.
*This eternal life, this being a part of the Family of God, it's a gift from God. Jesus Christ doesn't just give us a religion; He gives us a relationship with God!
*James Hewett told about an invitation at the end of a church service.
A man came forward, and this man was a member of that church.
It turned out that he had religion, but he didn't have Jesus.
*He was upset and moved by conviction for his sin.
With tears flowing, he took Bro.
Hewett's hand.
And he meant to say that his life was full of sin, but what came out was, "My sin is full of life."
(2)
*That's the problem we have when all we have is religion, but on that day that man got a relationship with God.
He trusted in the death of Jesus Christ on the cross for his sins.
And he was given a relationship with God the Father through our Risen Savior!
2. BEING IN GOD'S FAMILY IS A SPECIAL PRESENT.
AND IT COMES FROM A SPECIAL POWER.
*Again, vs. 12 says: "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."
When we believe in Jesus, God gives us the "power" or "right" or "authority" to become the children of God.
Church: This is the power of the cross, the power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ!
[1] AND THIS TRANSFORMATIONAL POWER IS EXCLUSIVE.
*There is only one way to get it.
You could have enough money to fill this church up with hundred-dollar bills, but you could not buy this power.
You could have all the weapons in the world, but you couldn't take it by force.
You could be the smartest person in the world, educated in the finest schools, but you could never figure out how to get this power on your own.
*That's because this life-giving power comes from God alone, and it's His special gift to everyone who receives Him, "even to those who believe in His name."
Jesus Christ gives the powerful gift of everlasting life, and we receive it by receiving Him as our Lord and Savior.
[2] THE POWER TO BE A PART OF GOD'S FAMILY IS EXCLUSIVE POWER.
AND IT'S EXCELLENT POWER.
*Having God's power of eternal life is the best thing that can ever happen to us!
It changes our destiny, and it changes our destination.
We go from being hell bound to Heaven bound forever!
God's power of eternal life changes us from being people who deserve shame, death, and doom into people who have the comfort and peace of a salvation that last forever.
*God's power of eternal life also turns us from being sinners into saints.
It breaks the bondage of sin in our lives and begins to transform us into people who overflow with God's love, joy, and goodness.
What power!
It can even turn us into children of God!
3. BEING IN GOD'S FAMILY COMES FROM A SPECIAL POWER.
AND IT IS FOR A SPECIAL PEOPLE.
*Who are these special people?
-- In the beginning of vs. 12, they are "as many as received Him."
That's our part: To open our hearts and receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
*Then at the end of vs. 12, our part is to "believe on," or "believe in" the name of Jesus Christ.
Our part is to trust in the name above all names, the only name that can save, the name that means "Jehovah is salvation," the name of Jesus.
*But what does it mean to believe on the name of Jesus?
William Barclay helped us understand when he said: "Hebrew thought and language had a way of using names which is strange to us.
*They did not simply focus on the sound or the meaning of a name.
Instead, the Hebrews added another whole dimension by including a person's character, personality and temperament.
To trust in the name of Jesus therefore means to put our trust in who and what he is: The embodiment of God's kindness and love and gentleness and service.
*John's great central doctrine is that in Jesus Christ we see the very mind of God, the attitude of God to men.
If we believe that, then we also believe that God the Father is like Jesus, as kind, as loving as Jesus was.
And it is only when we believe that, that we can submit ourselves to God and become his children.
*If we had never seen in Jesus what God is like, we would never have dared to think of ourselves as being able to become the children of God.
Only Jesus opens to us the possibility of becoming the children of God." (3)
*So, we enter the family of God by believing on, or believing in the name of Jesus, or as we would say: "You have to believe in Jesus."
The gift of eternal life must be received by faith, by believing in Jesus Christ.
*Many other Scriptures drive this truth home.
For example, John 3:36 says "He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."
And in John 6:47 Jesus said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life."
*The gift of eternal life must be received by faith, believing what God says about me: I am a sinner, and believing what God says about the danger I am in: Without Jesus, I am lost, and I deserve to go to hell.
But Jesus is the way to goodness and life.
*The gift of eternal life must be received by faith, also believing that God loves me in spite of my sins and that God's only begotten Son Jesus Christ loves me so much that He came into the world to die on the cross for my sins, believing also that He rose again from the dead, so He can save me forever.
And Jesus will save me, if I will just believe in Him.
*But believing in Jesus means a lot more than simply believing with your mind.
It means believing with your heart, believing with your life.
It means receiving Jesus into your spiritual heart, having a real relationship with Him, seeking to follow His ways, allowing Him to lead your life, and trusting in the Lord completely, because He proved His love for us on the cross.
*Christians: We believed in Jesus because He revealed Himself to us through the Bible, the written Word of God.
We also believed in Jesus because He revealed Himself through His life and death on earth.
As vs. 14 says, "the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us."
