Describe Jesus

This may be one of the hardest tasks we have a Christ followers, but it is an extremely important one. Whether or not we like it the truth is,

Our view of Jesus determines our actions.

What we believe Jesus said, who he is, and what he asks will determine what we do or do not do. This is important for us to understand. Yet, we must be careful that we are living out in mind and body what Scripture says, and not just what we think it says.

Keep looking!

If I had to try to in just a couple words simply say what is going on in this section of Luke it would be just this, Keep looking! Jesus is about to be crucified, this is his baptism he talks about in verse 50, and because of that he is giving words to his would be disciples, as well as his enemies.

Judgment is coming.

This is the imagery of the fire Jesus talks about to open up this section and bridge the preceeding parable with his present comments, as well as those about reading the signs of the times.

People will be divided because of Christ.

This is a logically conclusion based on who Christ said he was. If you think Jesus is just a good teacher, than he won’t be as divisive. Yet, Jesus made claims indicating he was not just a teacher, but in this chapter he is talking about noticing what he did and how this means he is the Messiah. The exclusive claim of Jesus will divide the family, if necessary.

All will not believe.

Hard to grasp at times, but yet still true. Thought Christ and God loves the whole world. Though he died for all, not all will believe on his name and be saved.

Primary Application: Jesus is higher than family.

Jesus will divide, and unify, families but he must be more important than family. In our culture I sometimes look around and wonder if we have not made family an idol. If an idol is anything which is greater than Jesus, this may be true of even some Christ followers. For parents it is worshipping their children, and putting their needs above the love of Christ.

Secondary: We must be faithful to his mission.

This is the Great Commission. We cannot just go out and make our world a better place, though I think this is important and necessary. We must preach the Gospel which is Jesus Christ.

Jesus is returning!

This is implied in what he is talking about just preceeding the talk about division. We must be reminded of this. We can see it all around us but this should not lead us to sit back and do nothing. Instead we must be like the servants who are doing the work while waiting for the master to come back.
Some great pastors and scholars can look at our culture and try to discern the signs, going very in depth to what each action means. I am not smarter enough to do such things, but I know this: Jesus is coming again soon. I don’t know when but I know I have been given a job to do until then!
Next Step:
Believe Jesus is the Messiah!
Pray others will see Jesus.
Share the Gospel, Jesus, with someone.
Help the church be faithful.
