Matthew 16:13-
Prayer
The world has a view of who Jesus is, often though it has nothing to do with what the Bible tells us.
Some would say he was a good man, some a good philosopher, a good teacher, just some guy in the past.
Other religions and cult even have a view of who Jesus is, again it never lines up with the Bible.
Some would say he was a god not the God, some would say he is one of the sons of a god, still other say just a prophet, or a man sent by god.
In our text the first of two questions Jesus ask the disciples who the people say he is.
Matthew 15:14
The were confused as well..
What were they missing?
Did they not see the miracles, did they not hear him teach?
What were they missing?
Well it could be they had missed his purpose they were looking for the wrong thing.
Do you know what I am saying?
There can be times in our lives when we get so wrapped up in the moment, the excitement we miss the whole message.
We miss the meaning of what a person is telling us because we are so upset or wrapped up in our own issues.
The people of Israel needed a saviour.
They were oppressed, they were downtrodden by the Romans and were looking for a conqueror, a military ruler, a kingly messiah.
So they missed the point of all that scripture was pointing to in a messiah.
There view was very nearsighted
This passage refers to the work the Messiah would come to do.
The Jews new this passage well.
Jesus refers to as well
Luke 4:17
Jesus is at home and proclaims who he is but it is not received well, it is not what they were looking for so they rejected him.
now we could stay here, and focus on the negative.
But I don’t want to do that today.
But here this before we move on.
Just because we don’t agree with or like what the Bible tells about the Saviour doesn’t make any less true.
Just because it makes you uncomfortable we can’t make up our own doctrine that suits us.
but let’s press on with the bigger question today.
Matthew
This is the question i must face, and every person here and outside this room.
You must face this and give an answer.
Listen to Peter’s answer
Let’s unpack that answer for a moment.
“You are the Christ” means the Anointed One.
He is the one they were waiting for .
Jesus was the one anointed by God to be the Saviour of the world.
But wait there is much more to this profession by Peter.
Holman New Testament commentary states
No longer was Jesus merely a miracle-working prophet from God.
He was now the king himself, the Savior who was promised.
He was truly the one and only Son of the living God.
Weber, S. K. (2000).
Matthew (Vol. 1, p. 250).
Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers.
No prophet, priest, king or ruler of Israel had fulfilled this role.
Jesus is the Son of the living God.
Psalm 115:3-8
But who do say Jesus is?
Who will you follow?
The gods of this world?
or Jesus the Anointed One, Son of the Living God.?
You must answer this question in your life.
Today I can help you with that.
If you are ready I invite you to come forward and we can pray for you to invite Jesus into your life.
Maybe you have been chasing those gods found in ps 115.
You know Jesus but you need to change direction in your life i invite you to come today so we can pray and asked God for help in your life.
What is your answer to Jesus today?
