Prov 6.
Proverbs 6:3 CSB
Do this, then, my son, and free yourself, for you have put yourself in your neighbor’s power: Go, humble yourself, and plead with your neighbor.
What is your favorite portrait?
(Show some of my portraits through the years…and show some ‘scary family portraits’ [like the game].)
…and show some ‘scary family portraits’ [like the game].

No one is prepared for life who has not learned some basic lessons on financial prudence, a meaningful work ethic, and moral precepts for dealing with society

Duane Garrett, author.
The Challenge of Discipleship:
[1.] Theological teaching seen as ‘not practical’ [this stuff won’t help me live my daily life]
Example: systematic theology; doctrine of the Trinity, creation, (or…)
[2.] Practical teaching seen as ‘not spiritual enough’ [this stuff is just general/secular thinking]
Example: practical theology; social justice, handling finances, married life, (or…)
The answer to all of this confusion is...
2 Timothy 3:16 CSB
All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness,
We could also add that, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline.” ()
In this passage in , over two Sundays, we will view three pathetic portraits which you and I never want to find ourselves in! [AND we will take these as God’s Word on these matters—because it is!]
Portrait #1: PLEDGED Perry ()
Primary Concern = Don’t cosign a note. Don’t put up security/surety for a stranger—or a neighbor. [Example has further implications…]
Debt dealings in OT Israel...
Nehemiah 5:4–5 CSB
Still others were saying, “We have borrowed money to pay the king’s tax on our fields and vineyards. We and our children are just like our countrymen and their children, yet we are subjecting our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters are already enslaved, but we are powerless because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”
Reason this is an issue: [snared; trapped; in neighbor’s power; 6.2-3a]
Financial Peril [lending in Israel done without interest to other Israelites; even no usury to loans to non-Hebrews;
Legal Peril
Relational Peril
Recommended Remedy:
See it as a matter worth losing sleep over. [6.4]
Fight like everything to be freed. [free yourself; humble yourself; plead with your neighbor (same tenacity as the widow before the judge ; escape like gazelle or bird from hunters; 6.3b, 5]
…to the poor & needy (especially a brother or sister)…give.
1 John 3:17 CSB
If anyone has this world’s goods and sees a fellow believer in need but withholds compassion from him—how does God’s love reside in him?
Proverbs 29:7 CSB
The righteous person knows the rights of the poor, but the wicked one does not understand these concerns.
James 1:27 CSB
Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
Proverbs 6:5 CSB
Escape like a gazelle from a hunter, like a bird from a hunter’s trap.
