Christ’s Response:

Word: “Peace to You!”

“Touch me”
by Eating Broiled Fish:
They see the real deal.
Each With me
Not just a fish. A cooked fish.
Not just a fish. A cooked fish.
As he’s eating… I’m real, and I’m what the Bible is all about!
V. 44: “Everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalm must be fulfilled.”
V. 44: “Everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalm must be fulfilled.”
So Jesus opens their minds… to how he is recorded on the pages of the Law, Prophets and Writings:
So Jesus opens their minds… to how he is recorded on the pages of the Law, Prophets and Writings:
I’ve been talking about this the whole time! All of redemptive history has been talking about this.
So Jesus opens their minds… to how he is recorded on the pages of the Law, Prophets and Writings:
Vss. 45-48: "This is what you must know!”
Jesus: "This is what you must know!”
Last will and testament:
Vss. 45-48:
I’m leaving soon. This is it. This is what you need to do and be and fulfill as the Church. If you want to belong to the church, you belong to this mission! Luke spells out this mission in detail in his next book, the Book of Acts.
Jesus: "This is what you must know!”
Transition:
Last will and testament:
I’m out of here soon. This is it. This is what you need to do and be and fulfill as the Church. If you want to belong to the church, you belong to this mission! Luke spells out this mission in detail in his next book, the Book of Acts.
This last will and testament is an invitation to the church, and amazingly fits seamlessly the vows that some of you will be making next week. These vows just don’t pop out of nowhere. They from the Bible. They hold us to this last will and testament!

Church Rooted in the Scriptures

45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead
With minds open, disciples start to put together the dots.
Like a connect the dot, and the picture emerging is Christ.
Resurrection theme through scripture!
Genesis:
: Protoevangelion: “He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Covenants: Humanity needs saving!
: Covenant with Abraham: I will give you land
: Covenant with Abraham: I will always be your God
Blood was involved! Sacrifice, life, new life
Exodus: Redemption from slavery, blood doorpost: Blood gave new life!
Redemption from slavery, lamb that was sacrificed
Leviticus: Burnt offering, grain offering, the whole sacrificial system, especially Day of Atonement
Burnt offering, grain offering, the whole sacrificial system- Day of Atonement
Deuteronomy
II Samuel: He is the eternal King from the line of David!
II Samuel: He is the eternal King from the line of David!
Ruth: Kinsman Redeemer
Jonah and the Whale: Jesus used this as a sign of his death and resurrection
: Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.
Examples of Psalms in Luke
Examples of Psalms in Luke
: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
12  Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
because he poured out his soul to death
: Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.
and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
: All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
All who see me mock me;
and makes intercession for the transgressors.
: They divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
: They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.
Examples of the Psalm quoted in the Book of Acts: 6
Open our eyes to the Bible.
: Jesus said, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’ ”
Problem with my preaching? Goal: Bible vs. Personal
Word is Central. My title: Minister of the Word (not Word and Sacrament), because the Word is central and the ‘and sacraments’ are subservient to the Word.
Open our eyes to the Bible. Preached. If you have a problem, you have a problem with the Bible.
We are people of the Word, grounded in the Word, sent out with the Word.
In a day and age where the Bible has been dissected, pulled apart, ignored, and taken out of our social conscience, we say, “!NO! We still believe the Word transforms. We believe people need to hear and and that it is the book out of the billions that exist that remains Spirit breathed!”
We
Vow:
Do you believe that the Bible is the Word of God revealing Christ and his redemption, and that the teachings of this church faithfully reflect this revelation?
Jesus left making sure the church would be grounded in ALL of the Scripture, and we today keep that as primacy here at ResLife.

Church is Made up of Repenting Witnesses

46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,
47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things.
47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

48 You are witnesses of these things.
Hints to the Book of Acts...
Apostolic Witness
To repent and to witness
To repent and to witness
Repent:
Gospel: Forgiveness, freedom, hope, salvation, union with God- that begins through repentance.
Church is Made up of Repenting Sinners
Admit you can’t do this yourself -talked about this last week.
Witness:
Hints to the Book of Acts...
But also one who proclaims that forgiveness of sins in his name is our only hope to the nations.
Hints to the Book of Acts...
You are someone who needed to repent, but also one who proclaims that forgiveness of sins in his name is our only hope to the nations.
repenter to reformer
the problem to the proclaimer
the worst to a witness
Enemy to Evangel
Take on Paul’s Perspective:
: For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle
: For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle
: To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ
: The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.
The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.
But realizing the need to repent propels us out to a) be honest with our sin, b) proclaim the need to repent out there.
VOW #2: Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God sent to redeem the world, do you love him and trust him as the one who saves you from your sin, and do you with repentance and joy embrace him as Lord of your life?

Church Empowered by the Holy Spirit

49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
How is the Holy Spirit’s power different than Christ opening their minds?
Jesus Opens their Minds, Holy Spirit Clothes them with Power!
Commission is more than information
Commission is more than information
Roles of the Trinity: Know the Word vs. Empowered by the Word!
Clothed with Power:
How is the Holy Spirit’s power different than Christ opening their minds?
Clothed with Power:
Power and Spirit: A common coupling:
Luke Couples them ; ; ;

VOW #3: Do you promise to do all that you can, with the help of the Holy Spirit and this family of God, to strengthen your love and commitment to Christ? Do you promise to accept the spiritual guidance of the church, to walk in a spirit of Christian love with your brothers and sisters, and to seek those things that make for unity, purity, and peace? And do you join with the people of God in doing the work of the Lord everywhere?
Paul: 5x ; ; ; ;

To KNOW the Word is to DO the Word
Goes back to the Word! Piper: “To seek the power of the Holy Spirit is to immerse yourself in the Word”
TO DO the Word is to USE the Sword of the Spirit!
Sword of the Spirit!
: "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope."
Pentecost:
Sword of the Spirit!
Sword of the Spirit!
Sword of the Spirit!
Know it and USE IT!
Only offensive weapon? What about the feet fitted with the Gospel of Peace?
Need to stand firm on the Gospel.
Christ is my LORD, that’s what we stand on!
Read it and the Spirit gives us the power to put it into practice!

Missionary Aspect to Being Empowered:
Prayer for people
Don’t keep the Word to yourself. Personal but not private.
Pentecost:
Pentecost: Spirit gave them the ability to speak in other tongues!
Spirit gave them the ability to speak in other tongues the WORD!
Ascension Sunday sets the stage for Membership Sunday
Pastoral Word: Process
Pastoral Word: Process
Membership to this congregation is a way to organize us, but that doesn’t mean that those who are
Covenant: Rooting around the same mission remains the same!
Where it breaks down
We already have the Power of the Holy Spirit.
Not intended to exclude, all come from different narratives. Patience, peace, and mission.
Joining a church plant me be because belonging to the organization was too difficult!
Church ORGANIC vs. Church ORGANIZATION
YOU Belong.
We already have changed lives.
Jesus never told the disciples to make vows before they were hammered with wind, flame and language on Pentecost!
Rally time isn’t meant to exclude, but meant to equip us for leadership, encourage us to grow in depth and breadth, and to press our mission forward.
We do this together, in faith!
For Sacrament:
but we anticipate next Sunday to covenant with one another at a deeper, more powerful level.
For Sacrament:
Tie Ascension, presence of Christ, to Sacrament
