Introduction
Scriptural Baptism
Introduction
So today, I want us to look at the importance of Scriptural baptism.
Today we will be celebrating the baptism of two at the end of our services today.
So today, I want us to look at the importance of Scriptural baptism.
Read Passage
Mark 1:9-11
9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him; 11 and a voice came out of the heavens : "You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased."
Before I get into what is scriptural baptism, I want to talk about what it isn’t, because these other views of baptism have no eternal significance. It is just a matter of getting wet.
What Baptism Isn’t
1. Baptism does not save anyone from their sin.
Infant baptism is not scriptural and does nothing for you
spiritually.
If a believer dies before he/she is baptized, they will still go
to heaven.
2. Baptism does not secure you nor protect you.
3. Any other baptism, other than scriptural baptism, does not
honor God.
As we look at Jesus’ baptism what can we learn?
1. It is an act of submission (vs. 9)
Some may ask, if baptism is not essential for my salvation, why do it?
It is an act of submission to God!
For Jesus, it was a time that He would begin His earthly ministry, and thus, His journey to the Cross.
Realize, Jesus is God, the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, and He is willingly submitting Himself to God’s plan of Salvation which meant that Jesus would give up everything for a world of people who would never earn what he was giving. Many, if not most would, would mock Him and keep going down their own path of destruction.
, NLT
5 Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had. 6 Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God. 7 He made himself nothing; he took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form. 8 And in human form he obediently humbled himself even further by dying a criminal's death on a cross.
For us, we are to be baptized after we have come to faith in Jesus.
We are baptized because our desire should be submission to God and his will for our lives.
He has given us a new life. This new life should be in submission to Him.
It is a life that no longer values the things and plans of this world more than the things and plans of God.
, NLT
23 Then he said to the crowd, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross daily, and follow me.
, NLT
8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the priceless gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I may have Christ
Baptism is the outward confession of one’s desire to submit his/her life to God.
2. It is an act of identifying oneself with Jesus (vs.9)
Jesus was identifying Himself with John’s ministry
He was identifying Himself as the one whom John foretold
about, the Messiah.
, NLT
15 But Jesus said, "It must be done, because we must do everything that is right. " So then John baptized him.
When we are baptized, we are again saying that we belong to Jesus.
, NLT
38 Peter replied, "Each of you must turn from your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ…
3. It is a time of commissioning (vs.10)
Just as Jesus submitting His life to God’s plan through His baptism, it was also the beginning, or commissioning, of His earthly ministry.
This was not the time of his calling, but it was the beginning what he was called to do.
It was a testimony of the beginning of Jesus’ ministry
As believers, we are commissioned to do several things in God’s Kingdom.
1. Produce fruit ()
John 15:16
16 You didn't choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.
2. Be witnesses ()
Acts 1:8
8 But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about me everywhere -- in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
3. We are to be God’s representatives ()
2 Corinthians 5:20
20 We are Christ's ambassadors, and God is using us to speak to you. We urge you, as though Christ himself were here pleading with you, "Be reconciled to God!"
4. It is a time to please God (vs.11)
What Jesus did, what Jesus was about to embark on, please God and He said so.
We want to please those we love.
Our desire should be to please God.
I wonder sometimes we have forgotten that we need to please God because we tend to spend so much time pleasing people.
What pleases God?
Coming to faith in Jesus pleases God.
Being submissive to God pleases Him.
Being obedient to God’s will in our life pleases Him.
Are you pleasing God with your life?
Conclusion
Is Baptism important? I believe it is.
As a believer it shows ….
That we are submitting our life to God and His ways.
It shows that we identify our lives with Jesus.
It is testimony that we are ready to live out the life God has for
us.
It is an opportunity to please God, the one who loves us with an
everlasting love.
Have you pleased God?
What is it in your life that you need to change to please Him?
Have you trust in Jesus?
Have you followed up with baptism?
Are you living the life you were redeemed to live?
Are you ready to start pleasing Him?
