Radiant Church, May 5, 2019 Mike Rydman Be Serious About God’s Name Exodus 20:7 What is in a name? Identifier; sometimes an identity YHWH Exodus 20:7 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. This is the only one of the ten commandments that comes with a threat from God Himself “will not hold guiltless” The Name of God is to be honored and protected Leviticus 19:12 You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord No idle, frivolous or insincere purpose Oaths taken without any intention of fulfillment Combining the name of God with something not holy Psalm 139:20 They speak against you with malicious intent; your enemies take your name in vain. Not used for selfish or evil purposes Usurping God’s authority Matthew 6:9 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Hallowed be your name Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Do everything in/for the name of Jesus Matthew 7:21-23 Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On the day, many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ Mark 13:5-6 And Jesus began to say to them, ‘See that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. Abusing the name of Jesus comes with great consequences Respect as the One who has absolute priority in our lives Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
