I. Your Obligation to your Calling

Ephesians 4:1 NASB95

I. Your Obligation to your Calling

Ephesians 4:1 NASB95
1 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,
(v.1) “Therefore I” Paul uses the conjunction Therefore to tell you that the subsequent truths are based on the previous truths in Chapters 1-3
(v.1) “Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord” Paul stays with the prisoner motif from Chapter 3. Paul does not want the reader to forget that he is writing as both a physical prisoner of Rome and a Spiritual prisoners of Jesus. He is captive to his will. He has relinquished his freedom to Jesus.
(v.1) “Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, Implore you to walk
a. Implore---call you; to call to aid; send for; I beg you please
(v.1) Paul says I beg of you to please “Walk”
Walk-peripateo-To walk about(physical)-to conduct one’s self, to order one’s behavior.
-Let’s take a look at the word in other scriptures:

(HELP)

Romans 13:13 NASB95
13 Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy.
Romans 13:12 NASB95
12 The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.
(v.13) “Behave”—Peripateo

(Help)

1 John 2:6 NASB95
6 the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.
1 john
(v.6) “walk”---Peripateo
-When used figuratively the word “Walk” means the way one conducts his/her life.
Let me summarize Paul’s thought: I beg you my dear brothers/sisters as a prisoner of the Lord to Conduct your life how?
Ephesians 4:1 NASB95
1 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,
(v.1) “Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling” He tells us how to conduct ourselves “commensurate, or in relation to our calling. Normally the word “call” is a verb. But in this scripture “Call” is a noun. In this case normally when “Call” is used as a noun it is talking about a person’s vocation. Paul is reaching back into a previous verse when he talks about this “Calling” it is not a vocation but a New Status, A new Situation, A new Father, A new disposition, A new life, A new home, A new spirit.
Ephesians 2:4–6 NASB95
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
(v.6) Notice it says that you were seated with him. That leads to this logical question:
Where were you seated before?

(help)

1 John 5:19 NASB95
19 We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
(v.19) We were sitting in Satan’s living room watching television with him.....Then the Lord snatched us out of Satan house and seated us in his house with our own bedroom.
Ephesians 4:1 NASB95
1 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,
eph
Summarize: I beg you my dear brothers/sisters as a prisoner of the Lord to Conduct your life in manner that is commensurate/or in relationship to your Calling(Salvation). Behave like your Father is Yahweh not like your Father is Satan. You have a new name, new home, new life, new destiny, new desires.
-As they say in the Baptist Church: Now govern yourselves accordingly.
Tell the story of the son the king who was causing havoc in the kingdom until his mother the queen sat him down and told him who he was and who his father is.
We don’t teach obedience from below meaning we obey for acceptance. We teach obedience from above we obey because we have already been accepted.
Transition Statement: Paul then begins his persuasive speech and exhortation by giving us the two classes of people that our behavior should effect. Our Fellowman and the Church.

A. Obligations to your fellowman

Ephesians 4:2 NASB95
2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love,
(v.2) Paul immediately talks about certain Character traits that should be displayed in how we treat our fellowman. We need to define these terms. This list is not exhaustive there are many traits that should be present in the life of a believer, but this list is an abridge version of the fruit of the spirit found in
a. Humility—The esteeming of ourselves as small---the correct estimation of one’s self. This word can be confusing for people because it seems like it is telling us to walk around talking bad about ourselves and underestimating our gifts talents and abilities. gives was the right balance between Humility; or Pride and Arrogance
Psalm 8 NASB95
For the choir director; on the Gittith. A Psalm of David. 1 O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth, Who have displayed Your splendor above the heavens! 2 From the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have established strength Because of Your adversaries, To make the enemy and the revengeful cease. 3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained; 4 What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him? 5 Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty! 6 You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, 7 All sheep and oxen, And also the beasts of the field, 8 The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea, Whatever passes through the paths of the seas. 9 O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth!
(v.1-3) The Psalmist is lifting up the Character of God---What is that called when we give God glory----DOXOLOGY!!!
(v.4-6) The Psalmist is lifting up the Glory of Man in light of his position to a Holy God. Notice (v.5) “Yet you have made him a little lower than God” When talking about man the Psalmist says you have made him a little lower than God. The word is Elohim. Sometimes that word “Elohim” can be used of heavenly beings or God. That is why the LXX and the Septuagint says “angels” Your NKJV uses the right translation of that word.
(v.7-8) The Psalmist talks about man’s rule over the animal kingdom. This Psalm gives us the right view of the categories of all the living beings in the cosmos:
a. God
b. Heavenly beings(Angels)
c. Man
d. Animals
-This helps us to understand order. Which means when we live like we are making our own rules, or when we willing violate God’s rule at it’s base level that is lack of Humility because we don’t have the proper estimation of our position in the categories.
-Humility is not thinking to high of one’s self and not thinking to low of one’s self. It is a balanced view of yourself.
b. Gentleness---meekness----not in man’s outward behavior primarily but in his inner understanding and lack of resistance towards the will of God. It is an attitude that we accept God’s dealings with us as good and do not dispute or resist. This term describe a person who has learn to submit to God even when they don’t understand without a whole lot of mouth. This attitude leads them to treat others with the same spirit that God treats others with.
c. Patience---Long Suffering---It is a translation of two greek words;
1. Upomone—Patience---Patience in Respect to things---Patience under great trials…Example:

(Help)

james 1:2-
James 1:2–3 NKJV
2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.
b. Makrothumia---Patience---Patience in Respect to Person---This is a patience that is measured by an ability to endure betrayal, deciept, and pain that comes from another person. The quality of a person who is able to avenge himself yet refrains from doing so.
2. Makrothumia---Patience---Patience in Respect to Person---This is a patience that is measured by an ability to endure betrayal, deceit, and pain that comes from another person. The quality of a person who is able to avenge himself yet refrains from doing so.
d. “Showing Tolerance”---anexw---Bear, accept, Endure..This is an explanation of that word long-suffering.
Ephesians 4:2 NASB95
2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love,
Summarize: With a mind that does not think too highly of themselves this person is able to deal with personal attacks with gentleness and patience understanding that it is not their right to take revenge, even going one step further and that is praying for their accuser’s. This person will take the high road and not repay evil for evil.
Explanation: This does not mean that this person just becomes a doormat for everyone to walk over, this person will follow the biblical mandate of confrontation when it is necessary, this person is skilled at picking their battles they don’t chase every conflict. They have learned to be like Jesus and sometimes says “Forgive them for they know not what they do”
What it is not: This is not talking about criminal acts like Physical or Verbal abuse, Sexual abuse or harassment, or deep emotional abuse. Meaning that if anyone is doing these things in the church you should not have to endure that please report that to your leaders and it will be investigated and dealt with.
-(v.2) has to do with relational endurance which means enduring People who are just hard to love.
a. The Deceiver/Liar
b. The Gossiper
c. The Climber—The come in trying to make name for themselves
d. The Controller—They aren’t happy unless they in control
e. The Betrayer
-(v.2) Tells us that everyone will not be easy to love and that we are to handle them with humility, gentleness, and long-suffering.
"But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous." -

One day Proculus took Paulus with him to the slave market to buy some new workers. Before the bargaining began, they examined the men to see if they were strong and healthy.
Among the slaves stood a weak, old man. Paulus urged his owner to buy this slave. Proculus answered, "But he is good for nothing." "Go ahead, buy him," Paulus insisted. "He is cheap. And I promise that the work in your household will get done even better than before." So Proculus agreed and purchased the elderly slave. And Paulus made good on his word. The work went better than ever. But Proculus observed that Paulus now worked for two men. The old slave did no work at all, while Paulus tended to him, gave him the best food, and made him rest. Proculus was curious, so he confronted Paulus, "Who is this slave? You know I value you. I don't mind your protecting this old man. But tell me who he is. Is he your father who has fallen into slavery?" Paulus answered, "It is someone to whom I owe more than to my father." "Your teacher, then?" "No. Somebody to whom I owe even more." "Who then?" "This is my enemy." "Your enemy!" "Yes. He is the man who killed my father and sold us, the children, as slaves." Proculus stood speechless. "As for me," said Paulus, "I am a disciple of Christ, who has taught us to love our enemies and to reward evil with good.""

Transition Statement: And why should we do this?

B. Obligations to the Church(Bride)

Ephesians 4:3 NASB95
3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
(v.3) “Being Diligent”
a. Diligent---present active participle---To be zealous---to make every effort to do our best
What are we to be diligent about?
(v.3) “being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit
a. Preserve---tereo—to keep eye on, watch, and hence to guard
(v.3) Paul says that we should all be eager and zealously guard, watch and keep and eye on the Unity of the Spirit. Being diligent is an active verb which means that Unity will not happen without intentionality. Folks will have to be loved on and confronted to maintain Unity. Satan will fight Unity harder than anything in the Church that we endeavor to do.
Will their be any disagreement, division or Cliques in Heaven?
-Obviously the answer is No!!!
Then why do we have Division, disagreements, or Cliques in our Churches when people are supposed to be striving to look like Christ?
a. Everyone is not saved
b. We are all at different levels of faith and obediance. God’s knew that that is why he said this scripture in

(Help)

Romans 15:1 NASB95
1 Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength and not just please ourselves.
The biblical mandate for growth and unity in the local church is that those who are strong in their faith humbly, gentle, and patiently love the weak and immature while they are growing up.
And why would the strong do this?
-Because the strong have their eyes fixed on the greater goal. And that is the Unity of Spirit in the bond of peace. The strong understand “a house divided against itself cannot stand” The strong understand that small division can grow to destroy a relationships, a family, and ultimately a whole church. The strong keep watch for division, gossip, and coup de tait. They willing let petty things go for the betterment of the body. They let personal attacks roll off their backs because the Unity of the Church matters.
-The Strong are always looking at the whole flock. Thier concerns are not usually for themselves, but how decision affect the whole body.
Application:
You are obligated to your call.
Act like your calling
You are obligated to your fellowman
You are obligated to the Church to maintain and preserve the Unity of the Spirit.
