Right perspective

Right questions lead to the right teaching to give the right perspective. Jesus has been teaching about greatness and the Kingdom of God (Mk9:33-35) what was required to enter the kingdom of God (Mk10:14-15); the way to enter the kingdom (Mk10:27). But still there was the wrong perception but right questions, leading to the right teaching.
Do whatever we ask (Mk10:35)
Jesus response, it is not mine to do this (Mk10:40)
So, Jesus stopped and taught there about the cup of suffering, and the cup of blessing and the baptism of suffering and blessing, but still there was potential problem that needed to be addressed or it would cause division within the apostles.
Our passage today is a great reminder that we are to live contrary to the world and what it believes but to have God’s perspective and follow Jesus example. So, in doing so, may we look at:
How we have been served by greatness
May we serve to be great
Greatness example for us to follow

How we have been served by greatness

We have some great examples in our lives, and maybe some not so great examples to of greatness. When we open the scripture we find both too, but today our focus is a biblical examples of true greatness, how we have been served by it and what we are to do with it.
For us to get there, we need to see where we are in the scripture and go from there.
Mark 10:41–42 NASB95
41 Hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant with James and John. 42 Calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them.
Mark 10:43–44 NASB95
43 “But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; 44 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all.
Mark 10:45 NASB95
45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?

Served by greatness; served by Jesus (Mk10:45; Mt20:28 is parallel)
Served by the prophets (Heb12:1; Heb11:7-8)
Served by the Holy Spirit (1Pt1:11-12; Jn16:13)
Served by the Apostles (Jn17:20-21; 1Cor4:913; 2Cor11:24-29)
Served by angels (Heb1:14; Lk1:11-19)
Served by Christians; let this one sink in, how, who, when, why and what were the results?
How did Jesus serve? Why did Jesus serve, When did Jesus serve?
Served by greatness; served by Jesus (Mk10:45)
Served by the prophets (Heb12:1; Heb11:7-8)
Hebrews 12:1 NASB95
1 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
The prophets who gave example, not perfect, but working examples for us. Example with direction on what we are to do, just as they did.
Hebrews 11:7–8 NASB95
7 By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. 8 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.
Noah a drunk, Abraham a liar - God still used them mightily to serve
Served by greatness; served by Jesus (Mk10:45)
Served by the prophets (Heb12:1; Heb11:7-8)
Served by the Holy Spirit (1Pt1:10-12; Jn16:13)
1 Peter 1:10–11 NASB95
10 As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, 11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.
1 Peter 1:12 NASB95
12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.
1 Peter 1:11–12 NASB95
11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.
The prophets prophesied for us, served us through the revealed word through the power of the Holy Spirit.
John 16:13 NASB95
13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
The Spirit that was promised with there for a purpose to inspire and guide the apostles so that we may have the revealed truth of the gospel.
Served by greatness; served by Jesus (Mk10:45)
Served by the prophets (Heb12:1; Heb11:7-8)
Served by the Holy Spirit (1Pt1:11-12; Jn16:13)
Served by the Apostles (Jn17:20-21; 1Cor4:9-13; 2Cor11:24-29)
By the power of the Spirit through the prayer of Jesus.
John 17:20–21 NASB95
20 “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; 21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.
Served by Christians; let this one sink in, how, who, when, why and what were the results?
And the cost to them was great so that we may have the gospel
1 Corinthians 4:9–10 NASB95
9 For, I think, God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men condemned to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. 10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are prudent in Christ; we are weak, but you are strong; you are distinguished, but we are without honor.
1 Corinthians 4:11–12 NASB95
11 To this present hour we are both hungry and thirsty, and are poorly clothed, and are roughly treated, and are homeless; 12 and we toil, working with our own hands; when we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure;
1 Corinthians 4:13 NASB95
13 when we are slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things, even until now.

2 Corinthians 11:24–25 NASB95
24 Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep.
2 Corinthians 11:26–27 NASB95
26 I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brethren; 27 I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.
1 Corinthians 11:26–27 NASB95
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. 27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.
2 Corinthians 11:28–29 NASB95
28 Apart from such external things, there is the daily pressure on me of concern for all the churches. 29 Who is weak without my being weak? Who is led into sin without my intense concern?
1 Corinthians 1:28–29 NASB95
28 and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, 29 so that no man may boast before God.
1COr1:28-29
and it that were not enough, served by Angels

Hebrews 1:13–14 NASB95
13 But to which of the angels has He ever said, Sit at My right hand, Until I make Your enemies A footstool for Your feet”? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?
Hebrews 1:14 NASB95
14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?
Hebrews 1:14 NASB95
14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?
God’s ministering spirits, sent to minister to those who will inherit salvation, receive salvation. They were a part of the revelation of God, and still are among us today, but first the revelation; take a second turn to .
Luke 1:11–12 NASB95
11 And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense. 12 Zacharias was troubled when he saw the angel, and fear gripped him.
Luke 1:13–14 NASB95
13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will give him the name John. 14 “You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.
Luke 1:15–16 NASB95
15 “For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother’s womb. 16 “And he will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God.
Luke 1:17–18 NASB95
17 “It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” 18 Zacharias said to the angel, “How will I know this for certain? For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years.”
Luke 1:19 NASB95
19 The angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
Where did the angel appear (v.11)? ; Why did the angel appear (v.12)? What was the response to the angel appearing (v.18)?
And finally one more to consider and let’s discuss this one for a couple of minutes
Served by greatness; served by Jesus (Mk10:45)
Served by the prophets (Heb12:1; Heb11:7-8)
Served by the Holy Spirit (1Pt1:11-12; Jn16:13)
Served by the Apostles (Jn17:20-21; 1Cor4:913; 2Cor11:24-29)
Served by angels (Heb1:14; Lk1:11-19)
Served by Christians; let this one sink in, how, who, when, why and what were the results?
Someone had to bring us the gospel message that we can to believe.
People still take the time to preach, teach, share the word so that you may grow in the Lord
People serve by cleaning a building, mowing grass etc, so we may have a nice place for us to meet.
People come and serve us when we are sick or in grief so we may know, feel and receive the love of God through them.
We have been served by greatness, we have seen the love, the dedication of the Lord, the Prophets, the Spirit, the Apostles, angels and finally by other Christians, so now how do we show our love for those who served us? How do we show our appreciation?
Here is a good hint, follow their example

May we serve to be great

Proof is in the pudding, put your appreciation, your thankfulness, your love into action and serve others as others have served you.

Serve through evangelism (Jn1:35-46; 1Pt3:15; 1Pt4:8-9; Mt25:42-46)
Served by angels (Heb1:14; Lk1:11-19)
Served by Christians; let this one sink in, how, who, when, why and what were the results?
Evangelism through the word and through actions.
Serve through edification (Eph4:16; Rom15:2)
Serve through benevolence (Eph4:32; Lk14:12-14; Ps41;1; Ps112:9; Pro11:25)
________________________________________________
Serve through evangelism (Jn1:35-46; 1Pt3:15; 1Pt4:8-9; Mt25:42-46)
Evangelism through the word and through actions.
Someone led each of us to come to know the truth and then to be set free by the truth, may we be willing to do the same. A good example is found in Jn1:35-46. this is where the first disciples who would be apostles were called and Philip showed evangelism's example
Serve through benevolence (Eph4:32; Lk14:12-14; Ps41;1; Ps112:9; Pro11:25)
John 1:45–46 NASB95
45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 Nathanael said to him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
Served by the Apostles (Jn17:20-21; 1Cor4:913; 2Cor11:24-29)
Then there is evangelism by preparation
Served by angels (Heb1:14; Lk1:11-19)
1 Peter 3:15 NASB95
15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
Served by Christians; let this one sink in, how, who, when, why and what were the results?
Evangelism by being hospitable and by your love
1 Peter 4:8–9 NASB95
8 Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Be hospitable to one another without complaint.
Evangelism by your deeds
Mt
Matthew 25:42–43 NASB95
42 for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; 43 I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’
Matthew 25:44–45 NASB95
44 “Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’ 45 “Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’
Matthew 25:46 NASB95
46 “These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
So may we be willing to share, willing to be hospitable, willing to invite others to see Jesus through the Word, all the while being prepared to do it!
Serve through evangelism (Jn1:35-36; 1Pt3:15; 1Pt4:8-9; Mt25:42-46)
Evangelism through the word and through actions.
Serve through edification (Eph4:16; Rom15:2)
Ephesians 4:15–16 NASB95
15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.
Serve through benevolence (Eph4:32; Lk14:12-14; Ps41;1; Ps112:9; Pro11:25)
Ephesians 4:32 NASB95
32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.
Be kind in serving one another, what is does it say, and why?
Speaking of benevolence look at
Luke 14:12–13 NASB95
12 And He also went on to say to the one who had invited Him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you in return and that will be your repayment. 13 “But when you give a reception, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,
Luke 12:14 NASB95
14 But He said to him, “Man, who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over you?”
Luke 14:14 NASB95
14 and you will be blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
And then may we consider
Psalm 41:1 NASB95
1 How blessed is he who considers the helpless; The Lord will deliver him in a day of trouble.
Be benevolent and be delivered in day of trouble
Psalm 112:9 NASB95
9 He has given freely to the poor, His righteousness endures forever; His horn will be exalted in honor.
Be benevolent and be exalted
Proverbs 11:25 NASB95
25 The generous man will be prosperous, And he who waters will himself be watered.
Be benevolent and be prosperous.
So, here is example of benevolence, reasons for it, how about personal examples? (ask the question, pause, wait, encourage answers)
Finally one more section to cover

Greatness example for us

Everyone loves a good example, but what about a great example, may we take a minute or two and look at a great example (MK10:45)
Christ’s example; a ransom (Mk10:45)
Christ’s example; empty yourself (Php2:7)
Christ’s example laying self down (Jn10:18; 1Jn3:16; Jn13:15-17)
Mark 10:45 NASB95
45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
I know time maybe short to wrap this up so let me give you the other scriptures
Mk10:45
May we learn to empty ourselves as Christ did
Philippians 2:7 NASB95
7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.
And may we be willing to lay down our life for our friends
John 10:18 NASB95
18 “No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”
Christ’s example; empty yourself (Php2:7)
He literally laid it down, you can spiritually lay down your life by putting yourself aside and serve in greatness by serving others, in evangelism, in edification and in benevolence, so in other words, in love!
Christ’s example laying self down (Jn10:18)
If Jesus could leave His majesty on high to come be born in a stable a the son of a poor teenager to be the tool God uses to bring people to God, we can do it. Be God’s tool.
1 John 3:16 NASB95
16 We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
1Jn
Be blessed by following Jesus example and Jesus command
John 13:15–16 NASB95
15 “For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you. 16 “Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.
John 13:17 NASB95
17 “If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
sum it up, close it up in prayer.
