Dwell on scripture

It is good for us to dwell on scripture. We should also be prepared to share scripture with others. We don’t have to argue the scripture, it can and will speak for itself. As we continue our series on things to dwell on, today we are looking at baptism. But first let us look at some scripture authority for us to dwell on, reflect on, ponder, consider and meditate on (Php4:8-9)
Today using the RSV for you, I think application on this is pretty point blank.
Philippians 4:8 RSV
8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Philippians 4:9 RSV
9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you.
We have during this series looked at: Bible, God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, Gospel, Sin, Repentance and now today we are looking at baptism.
Baptism, one of the commands given in the scripture, but not the only command regarding salvation
Baptism works hand in hand with
Hearing (Rom10:17)
Romans 10:17 NASB95
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
Believe (Jn3:16)
John 3:16 NASB95
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Repentance (Act2:38)
Acts 2:38 NASB95
38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Confess (Rom10:9-10)
Romans 10:9–10 NASB95
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
Living obediently (2Jn1:6)
2 John 6 NASB95
6 And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.
Let me emphasis, Baptism is necessary according to scripture, but it is not more important or less important then the other things (hear, believe, confess, repent, live obediently) it is a command and should not be neglected in the preaching, teaching, sharing, but putting too much emphasis on it can have a negative impact.

The command of Baptism

To obey a command you must believe in the one, the authority of the command. Do we have an understanding of the authority of the scripture? Do we believe that it is the inspired word of God? Without that, the command has no authority. So, as we look at this we are coming from a place that we believe in the authenticity and the authority of the scripture.
Definition of command according to Vines Bible dictionary, in short, for there are many variations of the verb used in the scripture.
To set in order, appoint, command; To enjoin upon, to charge with, to appoint over, to urge, incite, order, to prescribe, give order, command.
To set in order, appoint, command; To enjoin upon, to charge with, to appoint over, to urge, incite, order, to prescribe, give order, command.
Jesus commanded baptism (Mt28:19-20; Mk16:15-16)
Jesus commanded baptism (Mt28:19-20; Mk16:15-16)
To His apostles to go into all the world (nations).
Matthew 28:19–20 NASB95
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
and then in Mark’s account, it not only says into all the world but to all the people (creation)
Mark 16:15–16 NASB95
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.
The Apostles commanded baptism (Act2:38; Act10:44-48; Act22:16)
Preaching to the Jews
Acts 2:38 NASB95
38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
and then preaching to the Gentiles
Acts 10:44–45 NASB95
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. 45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.
Act10:46-47
Acts 10:46–47 NASB95
46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered, 47 “Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?”
ACt10:48
Acts 10:48 NASB95
48 And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.
Preached with urgency
Act
Acts 22:16 NASB95
16 ‘Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’
So, if commanded by Jesus, if commanded by the Apostles, it must be important. Baptism so now we need to look at what is baptism?

Baptism, what is it?

Outside of religion, baptism means nothing. There is no application outside of religion. Even within religion it can be confusing, some say sprinkling, some say pouring, while others say immersion. So what is it? What does the scripture say?
Baptism involves water as implied by Jesus and exampled by Jesus (Jn3:5; Mt3:14-16)
John 3:5 NASB95
5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
so one must be born again of water, so that does not define baptism yet. Look at
Matthew 3:14–15 NASB95
14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?” 15 But Jesus answering said to him, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he permitted Him.
Matthew 3:16 NASB95
16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,
So now we know it involves water by Jesus example.
Baptism involves water as implied by Paul (Tit3:5)
Titus 3:5 NASB95
5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,
washing and regeneration, sounds like water is involved there too, doesn’t it?
Baptism involving water as demonstrated (Mt3:14-16; Act8:36-38; Act10:47-48)
I mentioned the Matthew passage and the baptism of Jesus, but look at this
Acts 8:36 NASB95
36 As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?”
Acts 8:37–38 NASB95
37 And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 38 And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him.
Pricked hearts in Act2:38 lead to the command, a pricked heart here lead to the Eunuch asking to be baptised.
So, it involves water, it involves a pricked heart, it is voluntarily done not under compulsion but under command. Meaning you are not forced to do it.
Baptism involves immersion in water
baptizó: to dip, sink
Original Word: βαπτίζω Part of Speech: Verb Transliteration: baptizó Phonetic Spelling: (bap-tid'-zo) Definition: to dip, sink Usage: lit: I dip, submerge, but specifically of ceremonial dipping; I baptize
In scripture, it is likened to burial (Rom6:4; Col2:12)
Romans 6:4 NASB95
4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
And then again, look at this:
Colossians 2:12 NASB95
12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
Alert, alert, we need to be careful not to change the word or the definition of the Word of God
Mark 7:13 NASB95
13 thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”
Mk
That is what the Jews were doing, negating the word of God to something God did not intend in the first place. You cannot find in the scripture baptism as defined as sprinkling or pouring, it is by immersion.
So we know the command, we know the mode, now let’s look at the subjects of baptism.

Baptism: The Subjects of

There are things we can know about the people (subjects) of baptism, in other words who is baptized?
They must be people of faith (Mk16:16; Rom1:16; Act8:36-37)
As mentioned before Mk16:16 I should give it again for the emphasis is different.
Mark 16:16 NASB95
16 “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.
So belief is a prerequisite to baptism
Romans 1:16 NASB95
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
It is for the hearing of the gospel, for the gospel is the power of God for salvation.
Acts 8:36–37 NASB95
36 As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?” 37 And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”
It is for the repentant believer (Lk24:47; Mk1:15; Act2:38)
Luke 24:47 NASB95
47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
Repentance for forgiveness of sins. Look at words of Christ here.
Mark 1:15 NASB95
15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Repent and believe, and we already looked at Act2:38, repent and be baptized. So they need to believe, they need to believe repent of their sins prior to baptism.
Maybe better put in context the Luke passage just so you get the picture
Lk24:
Luke 24:44 NASB95
44 Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”
Lk24:45-46
Lk24:45
Luke 24:45–46 NASB95
45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day,
Luke 24:47 NASB95
47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
See the apostles had their eyes opened, just as we have our eyes opened to the spiritual things, the commanded things.
Repentance is of no value if you do not know you need to repent, and repent of what? You need to understand you are a sinner and separated from God due to our sins (ref only: Isa59:2; Ehp2:1) - (expand on this some)

Baptism: It’s purpose

God given purpose is clearly shown in the Word. So may we let the Word speak for itself.
Purpose: for the remission of sins (Act2:38; Act22:16)
We know Act2:38 but I want to add another
Acts 22:16 NASB95
16 ‘Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’
For the washing away of your sins
Purpose: for redemption, for forgiveness of sins (Eph1:7)
Redemption, the purchase price paid for a slave, we were slaves to sin, but Jesus paid the price for us
Ephesians 1:7 NASB95
7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
Purpose: to enter into union with Christ (Rom6:3-4)
Romans 6:3–4 NASB95
3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
Purpose: to be clothed in Christ (Gal3:27)
Galatians 3:27 NASB95
27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
It is at baptism that we are clothed with Christ, no longer do we have the garments of sin, but and given new garments; clothed in the righteous of God in Christ Jesus.
Purpose: to walk in newness of life (Rom6:5-6)
Romans 6:5–6 NASB95
5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;
Walk in the newness of life, in the likeness of His resurrection, where the body of sin is done away with, and are no longer slaves to sin.
Purpose: to be raised up from the dead (Col2:12-13)
Colossians 2:12–13 NASB95
12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,
Raised up, made alive, alive together with Him, forgiven!
Purpose: for the renewing by the Holy Spirit (Tit3:5)
Titus 3:5 NASB95
5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,
Not by anything we do, but by His mercy and His power in the Holy Spirit
Purpose: for freedom from power of sin (Rom6:7; Rom6:11-14)
Romans 6:7 NASB95
7 for he who has died is freed from sin.
Because of the power of the Holy Spirit, we die, and are freed from sin.
Romans 6:11–12 NASB95
11 Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts,
Romans 6:13–14 NASB95
13 and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
Dead to sin, no longer to present our bodies to sin since freed from sin and we present our bodies as instruments of righteousness to God.
Purpose: to be saved (Mk16:16; 1Pt3:21)
Mark 16:16 NASB95
16 “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.
Believe, be baptized and you shall be saved, don’t and you shall be condemned
1 Peter 3:21 NASB95
21 Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
It is an appeal to God for a good conscience, it is our point of salvation, again it works hand in hand with the other items mentioned.
