Every day is an opportunity to trust God, or to live in faithless unbelief.
We drive our cars down the road at high speeds, with traffic coming at us and only a thin line and 8 ft separating us… FAITH. We fly in planes and some of us have FAITH. You came into this building FAITH. Sat in that pew. This week you will trust the bank with your money, your doctor with your health. Your employer with your pay. How about God with your future?
Sin is seen as not merely evil, but the height of folly too.
That 11 day journey from Horeb to Kadesh Barnea was not an easy journey. a waterless wilderness.
This should have made them excited about the bounty of the Promised Land.
This should have given them confidence that God would take care of them.
Deuteronomy 1:21 HCSB
See, the Lord your God has set the land before you. Go up and take possession of it as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has told you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.
12 spies were sent out. When you read the account here and the one in the Book of Numbers you will see that God, Moses and the people were all in agreement that sending out spies was a good idea.
The intention of sending them out was spelled out in verse 22-23
Good News- The Land is awesome… look at these grapes.
Bad News- The Land is occupied.
With Bigger People
With Cities that have high walls.
With Bigger People, even giants.

We saw God move in the past

We have an opportunity in to trust him in the present.

( even though what lies ahead will be difficult) This is why I do not think it is good to make “the promised land” into heaven. Think of what was in the promised land. enemies, death, sin, war, obstacles, pain, the need for faith, etc.

We let fear become sin when we fail to trust and obey

We let sin corrupt our view of God

We let the sin of unbelief outweigh the encouragement of others

(Moses sought to convince them that since God had recently worked wonderfully in their lives, He could be trusted for the task ahead, but they would not listen. Moses reminded the people that God would fight for them.) But they would not heed his voice. By the way, one of the excuses that they used was that had to think of their kids. Think of the excuses people today can use.

We forget the consequences for disobedience can be great

Sowing and reaping. When they heard that God decided to let them have their way, it got their attention. They decided then to go do what God said. But they failed miserably because He told them He would not go with them because of their obedience.
