v.23 be on guard. stand guard All things. Beforehand.
Mark 13:23 CSB
23 And you must watch! I have told you everything in advance.
All things in advance.
The most helpful way to understand this prophecy is like we do with the Old Testament.
The near term and the long term are overlaid and no timeline is set. Some of these things will happen soon and some at a further distant point.
v.24 then the coming of Jesus

The Son of Man Returns

v.24 after the tribulation
after the tribulation
all these are signs accompanying the return at once, not a series leading up to the return.
v.26 they will see – those in that day.
Mark 13:26 CSB

v.27 Angels gathering the chosen. From “all four corners of the globe”
Vague Timing - parable of fig tree as symbol of discernment
v.28-31 fig tree parable
just as you can determine seasons by stage of trees, recognize return is coming
could possibly be reference to temple – first one that was cursed and destroyed, second ref. to future fruitful temple in new Jerusalem.
v.31 day and hour no one knows.
my words are more reliable and sure to happen than heaven and earth.

Watch for Me

Mark 13:32 CSB

on guard, alert, prepared. keep awake, alert, vigilant., stay awake, stay awake
on guard, alert, prepared. keep awake, alert, vigilant., stay awake, stay awake
the master is gone, leaves the servants to get the job done, don’t know when he’ll return. Don’t let him come back to find you sleeping.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Mark 13:37 CSB
37 And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Be alert!”
Watch – Be on guard! Beware of false teachers and false Christs. Guard against deceivers.
Watch – Be on guard! Beware of false teachers and false Christs. Guard against deceivers.
Be on your guard for you will be persecuted. Continue to proclaim the gospel. Endure to the end.
Be on your guard for the coming war.
Be on your guard, stay awake, keep watch. Jesus is coming again but you don’t know when.
Jesus seems to be showing here that trying to determine signs is not the point. No one knows. Not even Jesus knows when the Father will send Him back for His people.
Signs and times but only vague to keep the focus off a timeline and on to always being watchful, guarding, serving effectively.
is not about signs and timetables, but about discernment and intentionality.
Two encouragements to remain faithful until the end. Faithful to proclaim the gospel even in persecution,

and faithful to continue the work He gave each one while we watch for His return.

Big Idea: Always be ready for Jesus to return by serving faithfully as you watch for Him. (Hint: It’s not about the timeline)
