Some context regarding this book and this passage was written...

Just before The Book Revelation while John is in prison on the Island of Patmos
The Gospel of John is the most Spiritual Gospel.
Not telling stories in literal or historical context but inserting a story for its Spiritual Value.
I suspect that I am mostly like the rest of you.
When I’m in a pinch I work like the dickens to work it out on my own.
I try and work as hard and fast as I can to get something done.
That doesn’t yield the best work product.
I have a great relationship with my my advisor from seminary.
He is practical for an academic.
I can always call him up and just talk.
I was finishing my last course in the classroom portion of my PhD.
It was getting close to submission date and things we just not coming together as I had expected.
I had been disappointed in the feedback that I gotten from the draft that I had submitted.
I knew what I wanted to say…I knew how the work had to come together, I had checked out in my head just a little bit early.
I was talking with Dr. Pritchett, he told me what I was doing before I even described it.
Checking out…racing to the end…hiding from my commitment to complete and needing to be kicked in the pants.
I gave him the opportunity to do it…in his fashion.
He gave me what I needed and when I needed it.
I finished the class and am now I’m a dissertation away from a PhD.

Peter thought that he had forfeited any relationship with Jesus because of his behavior at the crucifixion.
Jesus had other plans...
Chapter 21 from the beginning…my paraphase
By this time most of the disciples had returned to their homes and back to work.
Fishing, tentmaking, carpentry.
This larger group of disciples were fishing.
Jesus made his way to this group on the Sea of Tiberias they were having a terrible day and night fishing.
Couldn’t catch a thing.
Like nothing!
They didn’t recognize the risen Lord but he came up along the shore and hollered out to them…Got any?
Of course the answer was NO.
I’m really glad this was NOT the time to tell a fish story and say they were limiting out.
My guess is that there was a bit of panic in their voices…just wasn’t a sport fishing day, or out having fun but was fishing for a meal for 7 disciples and their families.
What they did was very UNLIKE most guys...
John 21.21
Immediately, John [the disciple whom Jesus loved] said to Peter, after recognizing that this had to be and was in fact the Lord standing on the shore.
There was so many fish (153 large fish) the disciples had to jump into the water and pull it along 100 yards.
Jesus had prepared a feast for breakfast for them, their hunger was pushed aside until the next day.
At precisely the right time, under the right circumstances Jesus knew what to say.
They were full.
Their panic about feeding themselves had subsided.
Jesus had provided a miracle for them by filling there nets.
They were ready for the next things that Jesus had to tell them.
John 21
Now much is made in the literature about the two type of love that are referenced her, Agape’ Love and Phileo Love.
The best literature at this point does not really differentiate the two types of love at this point.
This is in reality something that was added and considered later.
This is wildly in use today.
Jesus as it is recorded says.
“Do you love me more than these?”
These who, these what more than a little muddled here.
This can be translated best by
“Do you, Peter, love me more than these men love me?”
This is a striking question!!!
Rewind the tapes to a month ago...
Peter denied, and denied and denied
In the days after the resurrection
denied

he was hopeless
he crawled back to his town
he kept his head as low as he could
He was in the upper room, dumbfounded and remorseful.
What had he done…His past, a recent past had collapsed on him.
Jesus asks him to “Feed my lambs” don’t make a whole lot of the change in lambs and sheep except that young and old, vulnerable and bold, prime and cast-off, white, green, brown, purple lambs and sheep all need to be fed.
Jesus is driving home a point…test and know your love for the Savior.
Regardless of your background, regardless of your status, regardless if you are running towards or away from God. Jesus knows and is patient and loving with us…his directive is to “feed my sheep.”
John 21.
Peter is questioning the Lord and also himself.
Jesus once again says feed my sheep.
Jesus confirms in Peter’s heart this is the reality that he had been waiting for.
The Lord was so invested in Peter that he built his church on him
Don’t be confused, this is a not the first Roman Catholic Pope.
Peter was dead over 200 years before the church established Papal authority and lineage.
In Greek, Peter is “petra” or rock.
Matthew is using a play on words to equate Peter or petra and rock.
It’s just a play on words
Peter would the first of many disciples up to and including you and I who are commanded to build the church by “feeding my sheep.”
Most believe this is Jesus delivering a prophecy about Peter’s death.
As reticent as I was to finish my last class well, as much as I avoided the closing date of the class and last date for submitting.
My Adviser called me out.

Peter probably died, Paul finally finshed in 64 or 65 AD.
He believed he was not worthy of being crucified like Jesus so asked to be crucified upside-down.
History not scripture confirms that for us.
