It’s natural to think that we serve the world better by being like the world. Surely by seeking sameness, we can better ‘connect’ with non-Christians? But that’s not at all what the Bible teaches. Like in this week’s passage, we learn that actually being different is a better witness. That separation is more important than assimilation. That being alternative is more important than being mainstream. And while we must never lose our gospel freedom or adopt arrogance in our ‘religion’, we do need to seek holiness for the sake of God’s glory and this kingdom on earth. Society needs to be struck by the contrast of the church community, not shown a fluffy, feel-good version of itself. This is why God makes us holy – to be different and to be a light in the darkness.
