Sermon Series: Living Life—a Series on Relationships.
Critical to personal and civic health and the health of relationships within the family.
The Scripture tells us that if we are married, our marriage is the most important relationship we have with people.
For those who have children, we have a great responsibility to raise and encourage children God’s way.
Ephesians 6:1-4
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise),
3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Main Idea: Of all the relationships we have, outside of God and our marriage, our relationship as a parent has profound implications.

First Point: A Parent testifies to the truth of God.

In life, all of our words, attitudes, and actions give a testimony as to what we believe about God.
Question: Do we demonstrate that God is real or a myth?
How we live our lives impacts how our children view God.
Believers are to imitate God’s holiness in all of their conduct.
Ephesians 5:1
1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.
Ephesians chapter 5 gives foundational instruction on how we, as believers in Christ, live in relationships—and that includes how we should parent (chapter 6).

Another foundational instruction is found in Ephesians 5:2.
Ephesians 5:2
2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Genuine love is motivated by Christ’s love for us.
Real Love (VISION STATEMENT) is valuing people (our children, our spouse, everyone)—seeking the greatest good for another.
Real Love is selfless, generous, compassionate, and steadfast.
Children thrive in a loving environment.

According to the Bible, how should children conduct their life?

Children learn by example—especially by the examples parent demonstrate in front of them.
Children obey and children honor by how the parent demonstrates these actions.
How do you demonstrate respect for authority? Do you follow the law or bend the rules.
Fourth Point: A Parent encourages through a right attitude, right words, and right actions.

Parents have a God-given responsibility to encourage their children to live life God’s way.
Ephesians 6:4

Right attitude: An attitude of love, respect, and compassion.
Right words: Words matter—make them count to build up and tear down.
Right actions: What you do speaks louder than words—make your actions demonstrate your faith in God.
