INTRO - We are looking at part of a passage that Jesus had with Peter following the resurrection.
We join Jesus and the others just following the fishing miracle where Jesus instructed the men to cast their nets to the other side of the boat.
From no catching fish to catching so many they could hardly pull in their nets, the men knew something was different.
When releasing it was Jesus who told them to cast to the other side of the boat, Peter rushes ashore.
The men join Peter and Jesus and they all enjoy some of their fresh catch and bread.
EST - Following a time of eating and fellowshipping with Jesus, Jesus asks Peter if he loved the Lord or not.
ESS - Our message will help you gauge three aspects of what Jesus considers important about loving others.
OSS - We will conclude our time by comparing what Jesus says to our notions of how we show love to others.
TRANS - Lets PRAY then read our text for this morning.
PRAY
What does it say?
WS - The word used in our text for lambs “amnos” is only used twice in the entire Bible.
The words lamb, and sheep are used frequently.
However, the original language here is very special.
See, we see it here used by Jesus and then in Revelation in reference to Jesus:
It will help you and I to know how the people of the first century understood this word.
ILL - Prior to the passover, Jewish homes took in a lamb.
That is, a baby sheep.
Our very special word “amnos” is baby sheep, or really young lamb.
That lamb was brought into the home for four days.
Now you can imagine taking in this helpless lamb.
The kids snuggle up to it, play with it, and love on it.
The lamb is completely helpless.
That same lamb is then sacrificed for them.
In our text, Jesus is instructs Peter to love them, the helpless lambs.
Now, that lamb is killed, but in Revelation, it is standing.
What was slain is alive.
TRANS - We must learn to love others like Jesus, as Jesus, and in the way He instructs.
What does it mean?
Following breakfast on the Sea of Tiberias, Jesus asks Peter three questions.
In his questioning Peter, Jesus uses the word Love.
The first two uses of the word for love love refers to a love that involves the will and personality.
The second type, or use of the word, love is a word that refers more to emotion than to the will.
We’re focusing in on just one verse this morning.
In our verse, we are focusing in on the word for love that involves the will and personality.
How determined is a Christian to love Jesus?
“do you love Me”
Jesus asks Peter if he loves Him three times.
It is so important to Jesus that He emphasizes Peter’s need to love Him.
Paul noted the result of not loving Jesus:
A person is cursed for not loving Jesus.
Your eternal destination hinges on whether or not you love Jesus!
Your eternal dwelling depends on your choice to love Jesus.
If you love him, then its to heaven.
If you don’t love him, its to hell.
In addition to eternal dwelling, it matters in our serving which we will touch on later.
Love for Jesus is so important that the Ephesian church was indicted for leaving their first love:
They might had loved, but sure weren’t showing it and Christ reprimanded them.
A non-loving church is in a seriously bad condition.
TRANS - We noted the Christians is determined to love.
Let’s shift to consider just how much love a Christian shows to others.
How devoted is a Christian to loving Jesus?
“love Me more than these?”
Jesus asks just how much does Peter love Him.
Let me ask you, how would you answer that question?
Perhaps it helps to know what these are?

Peter has a reputation for outspokenness.
On the evening prior to the crucifixion he boasted that he was the most loyal and stronger than the other disciples:
After Jesus’ thrice questioning, Peter is no longer bragging that his love for Jesus is stronger than everybody elses.
Is Jesus asking if Peter loves him more than other people?
Does Peter have more love than others?

Peter’s experiences in live come from his experiences as a fisherman.
A good catch made Peter’s day.
Jesus just gave Peter the best catch he’d ever had.
Did Peter love his possessions more than Jesus?
This is a place where many Christians fail.
Too often Christians love the gifts more than the giver.
Jesus is helping Peter get love right.
Peter’s ego needs a good check if he is to show others the sort of love for Jesus that is both authentic and real.
Boastful love is just as unreal as lacking or little love.
Jesus wants honest, humble, and constant love from his followers.
TRANS - We noted Jesus want determined, and devoted love.
Let’s now consider how that looks.
How does a Christian demonstrate love for Jesus?
“Tend My lambs.”
Recall where we started?
I told you about our very special word “amnos” which is a baby sheep, or really young lamb.
Also, I said we’d come back to talk about service.
Well, here we go; how should we demonstrate the love Jesus asks?
If you love, you will show it by your service.
Love moves us to do things for others.
Love urges us to care for the helpless just as a shepherd cares for a helpless lamb.
Consider what Paul noted in 2 Corinthians:
Poor service, lacking or none, tells Jesus a person does not love, or love enough.
Love is much more than words; it is deeds:
Keeping commandments is love in action and the indicator of true love.
TRANS - I talked about determined and devoted love and how that is demonstrated.
Where will you go from here?
What is God asking?
Love requires an “all in” attitude.
Jesus wants us to make up our mind to love him and to love others.
Love knows its object.
When Jesus is the focus of our love, God shows us how to love others.
When “all in” and devoted to loving Jesus, our spirit is moved to express love toward others.
Will you let God direct you to love on others as He loves on you?
