Prophesy retold, again
As a parent have you had to tell, tell and tell again?
Of course you did, so don’t be surprised that Jesus does the same thing with His apostles.
The importance of His passion is necessary, should be stressed.
As should we when we share Jesus fulfillment of the prophesy that is being retold here.
Jesus has predicted His passion and His resurrection previously
In area of Caesarea Philippi, stressing the necessity of it (Mk8:27, 31)
While travelling through Galilee, stressing the certainty of it (Mk9:30-31)
While travelling through Galilee, stressing the certainty of it (Mk9:31)
Is to be, They will kill, He will rise!
Now that is certainty!
Now on the road up to Jerusalem, stressing more details of it (Mk10:32-34) which we will get to in just a few minutes
May we remember that Jesus is fully man, He feels, has cares, concerns, and He knows what is coming, what is pending and what He must do so that we can have salvation free! -
Have you ever been scheduled for a surgery in advance and do you remember feeling a little stress or anxiety before the procedure or leading up to the procedure?
Jesus in the flesh had to have, had to face stress, anxiety of some sort, to some extent as He heads to the cross.
This morning we are going to look at
The setting
The prediction and the fulfillment of the prophesy
The remembrance and the reaction
Mk10:32
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
The Setting
If you want to describe something, you normally need to set up for it, to give the setting of it, so there are things we can get regarding the setting of passage from the passage to the passion that we can learn from, remember and grow from.
They were on the road to Jerusalem (Mk10:32; Mk10:1; Mk10:46)
They were beyond the Jordon
They came via Jericho
This is Jesus last trip to Jerusalem.
Notice the order in which they walked (Mk10:32 from NASB, NLT)
what was the order?
what was the order?
Look what more is said in the NLT
Notice the attitudes as they walked (Mk10:32; Lk9:51, Jn9:22; Jn11:8)
Jesus had steadfast determination
Disciples were filled with awe
The people filled with fear
Fear knowing what was waiting for Jesus, what was waiting for the disciples.
Are you one who is ready to walk into danger?
Jesus was they knew it and they also knew what could come of them and yet they went.
May we be willing to do that too, walk into danger of being rejected, being ostracized, being alienated or even shunned because of your belief.
From there in looking at (v.32) we see that Jesus takes the Apostles off privately, which is common at this time since time is short and teaching, reminding is important so they can carry off after He is gone.
This brings us to the next point.
The Prediction & touch on fulfillment
The prediction is the prophesy being foretold.
A reminder of what was to come so they were not taken off guard, even though He has told them previously.
Now, without looking at your outline, only looking at your bible or the screen, what things can we know that is being told?
They were going to Jerusalem (Mk10:33); fulfillment (Mk14:53)
There was no doubt they were going to get there, and all the things following were going to happen.
He will be betrayed (Mk10:33); fulfillment (Mk14:41-46)
Side note, not on your outline, only the Romans had the authority to condemn to death (Jn18:31)
and the fulfillment
Mk14:45-46
He will be condemned (Mk10:33); fulfillment (Mk14:55-64)
As Jesus stood before the whole council heard the lies and said nothing except answering one question which if He did not because of the authority the question was asked under would be sin, here look.
And Jesus answer
Mk15:
He will be mocked (Mk10:34); fulfillment (Mk15:16-20 Mk15:29-32)
He will be mocked (Mk10:34); fulfillment (Mk15:16-20 Mk15:29-32)
The mocking him dressing him, crowning him and beating of him found in the Mk15 passages
He will be whipped (Mk10:34); fulfillment (Mk15:15)
A scourge was made of leather thongs, weighted with sharp pieces of bone or lead, which tore the flesh of both the back and the breast- Vines Bible Encyclopedia
He will be spit on (Mk10:34); fulfillment (Mk14:65; Mk15:19)
and add to that
Have you ever been mocked before?
It is not fun, and Jesus said nothing.
He will be killed (Mk10:34; Mt20:19); fulfillment (Mk15:24; Mk15:37)
and after 6 hours, which is hours less than a normal crucifixion
He will rise on third day (Mk10:34; Jn2:29-22); fulfillment (Mk16:1-7)
He will rise on third day (Mk10:34; Jn2:29-22); fulfillment (Mk16:1-7)
Oh what a glorious fulfillment, have to read it all
Mk16:5-6
The Remembrance and the Reaction
It is good for us to remember the passion of the Christ, Paul says it is of first importance (1Cor15:3-4); His passion we celebrate (1Cor11:26) each week.
And as Jesus told, again the prophesy to be fulfilled there was reaction from the disciples, let’s take a minute here.
1COr
and the celebration, the remembrance until He comes
In the first prediction look at the reaction (Mk8:31-33)
What do you notice about reaction in second prediction (Mk9:31-32)
What do you notice about reaction in second prediction (Mk9:31-32)
While we see the differences in the first and the second there is no rebuke, there is no dispute and there is no questions in the third one, but what is common is Jesus knew what was to come and willingly was doing to do exactly what He said He would do (Jn10:11) and did it willingly (Jn10:18)

Closing thought: How did Jesus go, willingly, knowing what was going to happen?
Consider this
It was for His joy!
It was for His joy, so we may not grow weary and lose heart.
(Christ on Cross picture here)
Thomas Erdman said this, consider this:
“Let us pause to gaze on that face and form, the Son of God, going with unfaltering step toward the cross!
Does it not awaken us to new heroism, as we follow; does it not awaken new love as we see how voluntary was His death for us; yet do we not wonder at the meaning and the mystery of that death?”
