Introduction

Adolf Hitler considered by many at the time of his reign to be the epitome of the one Jesus speaks of in our text today.
His political program brought about unprecedented death and destruction to the whole of the continent of Europe.
His policies were responsible for around 50 million civilian and military deaths.
Holocaust, 6 million Jews
Biographer Ian Kershaw stated, “Never in history has such ruination, physical and moral, been associated with the name of one man.”
However, we will see the Jesus was not referring to Hitler when he speaks of the abomination of desolation in the text today.
Who is he?

He is equivalent to Daniel’s abomination of desolation . (14)

(NKJV)
14“So when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not” (let the reader understand), “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
There are three passages in Daniel that refer to the abomination of desolation. (, , )
(NKJV) “And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be one thousand two hundred and ninety days.
Several things can be said about Daniel’s prophecy.
11“And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be one thousand two hundred and ninety days.
The prophecy had a past fulfillment in Antiochus Epiphanes, 178 BC.
King of Syria
Conquered Jerusalem
Tried to force Hellenistic (Greek) culture upon the Jews.
Desecrated the temple
Built an altar to Zeus
Sacrificed swine upon it
Set up prostitution within the temple chambers
Jesus said there would be a future fulfillment. So when you see...
Four views of this prophecy throughout church history.
No future fulfillment. Fulfilled in AD 70 when Roman general Titus besieged Jerusalem
Jewish revolt against Rome
Titus besieged Jerusalem and starved it to death.
Josephus, 1,100,000 dead
A lot of what Jesus foretold here was fulfilled during this siege.
Others see Jesus referring to the church age and the trials the church has to go through before His return.
Still others view the prophecy as referring exclusively to the end times.
Others believe that Jesus was answering the very questions (v 4) the disciples asked; therefore, the prophecy refers to both the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70 and the end times. This is the one I accept.

He will set himself up to be God (14)

(NKJV) “So when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not” (let the reader understand), “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
In the temple of God.
14“So when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not” (let the reader understand), “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
The very presence of God
Stands as God, a replacement for God
(NKJV) Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.
3Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.
(NKJV) And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months.
4who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.
Subscribing to the fourth position. Without a doubt, Jesus is referring to the anti-christ.
5And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months.

He is to be fled from immediately. (14-16)

(NKJV) “So when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not” (let the reader understand), “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let him who is on the housetop not go down into the house, nor enter to take anything out of his house. And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes.
14“So when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not” (let the reader understand), “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
15Let him who is on the housetop not go down into the house, nor enter to take anything out of his house.
Flee to the mountains. Head to higher ground. Hide!
16And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes.
17But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days!
Don’t bother with possessions.
18And pray that your flight may not be in winter.
Bug out!

He will bring about unparalleled horror. (17-19)

(NKJV) But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! And pray that your flight may not be in winter. For in those days there will be tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the creation which God created until this time, nor ever shall be.
17But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days!
The weak will be most vulnerable.
18And pray that your flight may not be in winter.
Fleeing will be much hard in the winter. Survival will be much worse in the winter.
19For in those days there will be tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the creation which God created until this time, nor ever shall be.
The world has never seen such.
(NKJV) Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, “Go and pour out the bowls of the wrath of God on the earth.”
It is so bad that God intervenes to shorten the duration.
1Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, “Go and pour out the bowls of the wrath of God on the earth.”
(NKJV) And unless the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake, whom He chose, He shortened the days.
20And unless the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake, whom He chose, He shortened the days.

Take heed! (23)

(NKJV) But take heed; see, I have told you all things beforehand.
23But take heed; see, I have told you all things beforehand.
Jesus did not leave us unprepared.
God is still in control.
These events will not catch Him by surprise.
We can be assured of eternal deliverance, no matter the current situation.
