Welcome / Introduction

Remaining Weeks
Judgement - Hell and Heaven
Mission

Spectrum of Beliefs for Hell

Secular - No judgement, No Hell, No Heaven
Universalist - No Hell, Jesus is not the only way
Christian Universalist - No Hell, Jesus will save everyone in the end no matter what they believe
Christian Annihilist - There is a hell, but it is not eternal, instead the soul is destroyed so that it is not eternal punishment.
Biblical Christian - hell: A place of eternal conscious punishment for the wicked. (56G)
“Purpose of the Bible is not to inform us about Hell but to warn us about it.”
Sometimes we see the warnings but we don’t believe them or we ignore them
Video - Warning
“I’m scared [to write a book on hell] because so much is at stake. Think about it. If I say there is no hell, and it turns out that there is a hell, I may lead people into the very place I convinced them did not exist! If I say there is a hell, and I’m wrong, I may persuade people to spend their lives frantically warning loved ones about a terrifying place that isn’t real! When it comes to hell, we can’t afford to be wrong. his is not one of those doctrines where you can toss in your two cents, shrug your shoulders, and move on. Too much is at stake. Too many people are at stake. And the Bible has too much to say.” Francis Chan
MIM: Read and believe the warning signs that the Bible gives us about hell.

Two Things to Remember When You Talk About Heaven and Hell

1. We are not God

God is the Creator - we are the creation
God is all powerful - we are not
God is eternal - we are finite
God is all wise - we are fallen
God is perfect - we are sinful

2. We don’t deserve grace and mercy

that is the definition of grace and mercy that they are undeserving
God would be just to condemn all people, because of our sin
Romans 3:10–12 ESV
10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
God is gracious in that He would save anyone
ILLUSTRATION: We don’t decide the weight of sin

The Realities of Hell

hell: A place of eternal conscious punishment for the wicked. (56G)

Hell is a place of ultimate justice
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. - .

And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Hell is a place of conscious torment
22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ - .

Hell is a place of continual rebellion

Hell is a place of continual rebellion
We must not imagine the damned sinner displaying gospel repentance and longing for the presence of Christ. he damned indeed are longing for an escape from punishment, but they are not ‘new creations.’ hey do not, in hell, love the Lord their God with heart, mind, soul, and strength. Instead, they are now handed over to the full display of their natures apart from grace, natures that are satanic ( ). Thus, the condemnation continues forever and ever and ever, with no end in view either for the sin or the punishment thereof.” - Russell Moore
Hell is a place of complete separation
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ - .
Hell is a place of eternal duration

47 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, 48 ‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ - .

Common Questions

Does God send good people to hell?

No, But there are no good people, “For all have sinned and fallen short the glory of God.” “All have turned away from God”

How can an all loving God send people to hell?

God does not delight in the damnation of sinners
Do people who never hear the gospel go to hell?
11 Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel? - .

God desires them to repent and turn to Him in faith

God loves sinners so much that he made a way for their salvation
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. - .

All people have knowledge of God the Father and reject him.
There are no innocent people in the world
All people have knowledge of God the Father and reject him.
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. - .

Applications

The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), .

Applications

Believe in this doctrine personally and passionately
You will stand before God one day and only you can answer for your faith in him
Tell people humbly and urgently
We are talking about people’s eternal judgment
One of the reasons I am a pastor is because I want to make sure people know that there is a place called Hell.
I want to make sure the members of this church are ready for Judgement.
Did you know that the Bible says I will give an account to God for the faith and life of every member of this church?
Live with bowed heads and open hands.
Living daily repentfull lives (confessing your sins to God and turning to him for grace and mercy)
Be reminded that this world and its pleasures are fleeting. They are like dust. So keep a loose hold to the things of this world and instead look toward the eternal Kingdom that Jesus has prepared for us
