What is Speaking in tongues
Good morning and happy Victoria day long weekend.
So grateful you were able to join with us today, Either in person or online!
We are continuing our Living the supernatural Lifestyle series, and it would be completely irresponsible to ignore speaking in tongues in this series.
One of the most untaught a controversial subjects in the modern church is "speaking in tongues"
some accuse speakers of it as being unruly, or even demonic.
But what does the Bible have to say about it?
Ill
I remember a few years ago we took the kids to Fairmont for Spring break.
When we were at the hot springs, and waiting for the girls to get ready after a relaxing soak.
There were 2 guys also waiting.
I took notice of their conversation and began to listen in.
hey its not eaves dropping in a public space…just saying
I devised that one was a Seminary student and the other a high school teen.
The subject of speaking in tongues came up and my ears perked up.
The seminary student went on to say.
tongues only shows up in 3 places in the bible and one of the places Paul says “If I” so he’s not even saying He does!
It took every ounce of self restraint not to say something, but lucky for me Shirl and the girls came out of the changeroom
What I really wanted to say to him was.
HOW MANY TIMES DOES THE BIBLE HAVE TO SAY IT BEFORE YOU BELIEVE IT !
The Bible talks about tongues more than 3 times
, , , ,
In fact the Greek words xenoglossia (ziːnəˈɡlɒsiə) glossolalia (glos·so·la·li·a)
are used 35 times.
xenoglossia
The bible uses the word xenoglossia translated as "speaking in tongues" as occurring at three major turning points in the early Christian movement:
Pentecost,
the first outreach to Gentiles,
and the baptism of some followers of John the Baptist.
and the baptism of some followers of John the Baptist.
Its believed xenoglossia is used when the listeners understand the words being spoken.
in comparison 1 Corinthians Paul uses the word glossolalia
And appears to reference when the listener does not understand the words and needs to be interpreted.
I believe this is where alot of misunderstanding arrives in the Church.
2 different greek words, both translated into the same english set of words

Story of early Pentecost......revival of speaking in tongues
Early pentecostal missionary believed they would learn the language when they stepped on the shores
We know the bible teaches about speaking in tongues, we know the early church practiced it.
We know all throughout church history it was practiced.
We know the bible teaches about speaking in to
We know its use was amplified during the Pentecostal movement
We know denominations that practice it are the fastest growing denominations
Still many Christian are opposed to speaking it, and even allowing others to speak it
Ill of Scott
A few years ago I had a member in the church want to meet with me about
speaking in tongues in the service.......
You should not allow that person to speak in tongues in the service!
did you know the context of that passage....you should read it
1 cor 14:39
The funny thing is is passage many use to dissuade people from practicing tongues
But Paul is not doing that.
rather He is saying Prophesy is better than tongues in a church gathering, so everybody understands what’s going on.
