Jesus is the Light

He calls himself the Light of the World- the only way to life and then condemns everyone that they will die in their sins unless they believe in him (23)
Some people were listening to this exchange and began to believe that Jesus really was the Messiah
MANY- that could happen to you. You could start out this message lost and by hearing the words that Jesus says- you could be saved.
Jesus points to the Father
We need witnesses to be backed up, Jesus doesn’t. Why? Because He came from God.
He has the authority of God when He speaks

Jesus speaks as God, for God, with God- because He IS God

As they learned that Jesus is God, what he was doing, why He was doing it- then they believed. But, they had to hear about this relationship first.

You could start out listening as an unbeliever and end as a believer
What did they start to believe? That Jesus is God, sent to save the broken people of this world that couldn’t save themselves.

Confusing, but true
1. You can’t know GOD if you refuse to know JESUS

People say “I pray” or “yeah, I love God” but they leave Jesus out of it
This is like watching the rain and saying that you love sailing on the ocean
You can see the real thing partially
You know that it is real, and you have an idea of what it is
But you don’t know the whole truth

Many people today like the idea of God, just like they like the idea of Christianity
They are standing in their houses, watching the rain gently sprinkle down- talking about how the ocean is beautiful and the waves are so tranquil
They don’t believe that those same beautiful waves can be enormous at times.
They reject the idea that people’s boats are capsized and people die while sailing on the ocean
They are not comfortable with the fact that in order to really see and know and love the ocean they have to abandon the safety of land and be completely committed to their boat as their only life support
We have to leave the safety of how we feel or what we want, be completely committed to Jesus as our only way of life- that’s the only what to really see and know and love God.
People don’t like the fact that being a Christian means being a follower of Jesus
2. Being a CHRISTIAN means being a JESUS-FOLLOWER
People want the Church without Jesus
They want Christianity without Jesus
Some people want God without Jesus
Many many people want religion with out God or Jesus
But, Jesus is God
But, Jesus is God
7 times in this passage is the term “IAM” which is a name for God (v24)
Jesus uses it in relation to himself because He is God
You can’t have God without Jesus
If they try to have God without Jesus, they don’t really have God at all
When they don’t know who this is, because they didn’t know who sent him

Jesus says “I am from God, so if you knew God then you should know me” but they don’t know Him

As they learned that Jesus is God, what he was doing, why He was doing it- then they believed
What were they believing? That Jesus was sent from God and that Jesus was God

keeping us safe, curing us from fear, protecting us from Satan, guiding us, helping us, giving us strength and purpose to LIVE!
This light goes on forever. And we can have it forever in heaven with him if we believe and follow.
Notice he says that anyone who “follows” him.
Tonight, if you have never believed, choose to follow Him.
Don’t go to hell when you could go to heaven with Jesus
He died so you don’t have to
He wants to set you free from your mistakes and their consequences
He loves you
Will you follow the king?

This is also a reminder for those of us who are already followers of Jesus- He is God.
We will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.
We are not stuck in a dark place anymore, we have His light - His life in us
Take a minute to consider, are you living in a way that reflects his light?
Have you taken your eyes off of him and not been
Take time right now to confess and ask for forgiveness if you have stopped shining that light like you should. Walk in his light.
