Satan’s Arrows

Guilt
Fear
Temptation
Busyness and Distractions
Accusation
This might all sound superstitious or like some fantasy world.
We think of Satan as a demonic, red guys with horns and a pitchfork
And when we are looking for the wrong enemy, we are much more likely to lose the battle.
Be on guard and be equipped to overcome the schemes and arrows of the evil one.

Names are Important

Jeremy means “exalted of the Lord” (from Jeremiah)
Jabez – borne in pain
Gideon – having a stump for a hand
Leah — weary
Apollos— Destroyer
Names are important in the bible, they are not just a way of referencing someone, but the person’s identity is wrapped up in a name.

Accusation: Battle for Identity

9-
Revelation 12:9–10 ESV
9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.
What are some of the names or identities of Satan used here?
great dragon
ancient serpent
Devil
Satan
Deceiver
Accuser
The last two names of Satan are important

Deceiver of the World

From the beginning, Satan has been a liar.
gen 3 1-
Genesis 3:1–3 ESV
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”
Genesis 3:1 ESV
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

Genesis 3:1–2 ESV
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,
Satan twists the words of God.
Satan twists the words of God.
Satan twists the words of God.
God didn’t say to not eat of ANY tree in the garden, just the one.
Eve corrects the deceit of Satan with the actual words of God.
Genesis 3:4–5 ESV
4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
4
Satan then questions the character and goodness of God
“Surely God is lying to you because He doesn’t want you to be like Him.”
Genesis 3:6 ESV
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
6
The lies of Satan are hard to thwart.
Eve starts to believe him, starts to question God and not listen to His words.
She believes Satan is speaking truth and that his words will bring her satisfaction and pleasure.
Genesis 3:7 ESV
7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
gen 3
Shame is their new name.
The realization that they are naked points to their brokenness because of sin.
And notice that Satan is no longer there, which is how the cycle of sin continues even today.
We are tempted
Believe lies (either by Satan or the world)
Doubt God
Choose to turn from Him
And broken becomes our identity
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
That is who we are apart from Christ
Romans 3:24 ESV
24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
That is who we are IN CHRIST

Accuser

Revelation 12:10 ESV
10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.

What ever words you choose com
Jabez – borne in pain
Gideon – having a stump for a hand
Leah — weary
Apollos— Destroyer
The second name Satan is called
As Satan used lies and temptation to lure us into sin, he uses accusation to keep us burned in shame.
Ultimately Satan desires that our sin, our mess ups, our struggles, our trials, our temptations, and even our upbringing, become the things that define us.
Ugly becomes our name
Failure becomes our name
Loser becomes our name
Unworthy becomes our name
Rejected becomes our name
The passage says he “accuses us day and night...”
When you are told a lie over and over again it is easy to begin to believe it isn’t it?
That is the beauty of the Gospel.
John 1:12 ESV
12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
1 John 3:1 ESV
1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
Ephesians 2:10 ESV
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

How to break the Arrow of Accusation

Romans 8:1 ESV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Believe the Good News

Revelation 12:11 ESV
11 And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.
The Blood of the lamb
Ephesians 1:7 ESV
7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

Listen to God’s Voice

Revelation 12:11 ESV
11 And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.
John 10:11 ESV
11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
john 10
Listen to God’s voice above any other voice that tries to define your identity.
His voice is all that matters.
John 10:27–28 ESV
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
