(Ps 34) The Praise, Happiness, and Protection of God Seekers.

This Psalm is an interesting response to 1 Sam 21:10-15. David narrowly escapes the King of Gath. However, instead of fretting he turns to praising God and confessing the blessing of seeking God. This Psalm reminds us that we should see our deliverance from struggles as an answer of prayer, a blessing from God. Our response should not be despair, worry, anger and bitterness …. But to praise God for his continued goodness towards us.

Note: The Historical Background of the Psalm: David escapes King Achish (Ablimelech) - . Remember this as we study .
1 Samuel 21:10–15 ESV
10 And David rose and fled that day from Saul and went to Achish the king of Gath. 11 And the servants of Achish said to him, “Is not this David the king of the land? Did they not sing to one another of him in dances, ‘Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?” 12 And David took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish the king of Gath. 13 So he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands and made marks on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard. 14 Then Achish said to his servants, “Behold, you see the man is mad. Why then have you brought him to me? 15 Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to behave as a madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?”

2. What stands out in verses 1-5? How does the historical context shape the meaning?

David commits to continuous praise. (v. 1, v.2)
God is the biggest thing in our life (v. 3) [magnify the Lord]
God answers the prayers and fears of those who seek God. (v. 4)
Those who seek God find happiness, deliverance. (v. 5)

3. How can we apply this text? (coming days, specific times)

Our evangelism is part of our praise (by calling others to praise)
Regular and routine, public and private, praise should be a major part of our faith.
The best thing we can do when we are in trouble, struggling - is to seek (pray, study) God.
